TL;DR: In this paper, an investigation into what schoolboys understand about evolution and heredity before they are taught these topics was carried out by means of open-ended interviews and it was found that the boys' understanding had seven foci: evolution as a phenomenon, why evolution occurred, the process of change, adaptation, selection, chance, and inheritance.
Abstract: Results are reported of an investigation into what schoolboys understand about evolution and heredity before they are taught these topics. This was explored by means of open-ended interviews. It was found that the boys' understanding had seven foci: evolution as a phenomenon, why evolution occurred, the process of change, adaptation, selection, chance, and inheritance. The concept of adaptation was found to be particularly well established, that of chance least so. Naturalistic and Lamarckian interpretations of evolution were predominant. Key concepts in the boys' existing knowledge were identified and incorporated into outline teaching schemes.

TL;DR: Presentation of external information at a high rate was used to reduce the frequency of negative thoughts, and the subsequent effect on depressed mood examined, and reduction in negative thought frequency correlated significantly with score on the Newcastle diagnosis scale, being greater for neurotic compared to endogenous depression.
Abstract: Cognitive theories of depression propose that depressed mood is caused by depressing cognitions (negative thoughts). In two studies of depressed patients, presentation of external information at a high rate was used to reduce the frequency of negative thoughts, and the subsequent effect on depressed mood examined. Single-case designs were employed in both studies. In the first study, significant reduction in negative thoughts and depressed mood was achieved in each of two selected patients. In the second study, the same procedure produced reduction in negative thoughts which was individually significant for seven of 13 unselected depressed patients, and also significant for the 13 patients as a group. However, this led to little improvement in depressed mood. This appeared to be due to the small extent of thought reduction achieved. Reduction in negative thought frequency correlated significantly with score on the Newcastle diagnosis scale, being greater for neurotic compared to endogenous depression. Mean depressed mood and mean negative thought frequency were significantly positively correlated across subjects.

TL;DR: In this paper, a new method of dating sedimentary rocks of known stratigraphic age has been proposed by using data from size-fractionated argillaceous sediments, treated by a graphical method of age calculation.
Abstract: ATTEMPTS to date sedimentary rocks by isotopic methods have produced controversial results. That sedimentary rocks of known stratigraphic age have not been dated with any great success is considered to be one of the major disadvantages of the K–Ar method1. Previous attempts have been unsuccessful2,3 because sediments contain argon which had been inherited from previous orogenic K–Ar events before weathering, transportation and deposition. This means that the time of sedimentation cannot usually be obtained by the standard calculation. A new method of dating sediments proposed here attempts to overcome this problem by using data from size-fractionated argillaceous sediments, treated by a graphical method of age calculation.

Abstract: Although there were many physicians who treated athletes before Galen, I believe that he was the first to devote a major portion of his time to this field of endeavor. Furthermore, his systematic observations, his aggressive pursuit of newer and better ways of treatment, his teaching, and his publishing of his observations make him a kindred soul to the team physician and practitioners of sports medicine of today. It is for these reasons that I believe that he can justly be called the "Father of Sports Medicine."

TL;DR: Both drugs proved equally effective in relieving the symptoms of primary depression but mianserin showed a reduced incidence of side-effects which was statistically significant.
Abstract: A double-blind controlled comparative trial of mianserin (Norval) and amitriptyline was conducted in general practice. Fifty-one patients were treated with amitriptyline and fifty-five with mianserin. The dosage for the first week was 25 mg t.d.s. for amitriptyline and 10 mg t.d.s. for mianserin, increasing to 50 mg t.d.s. and 20 mg t.d.s. respectively for the subsequent three weeks. Both drugs proved equally effective in relieving the symptoms of primary depression but mianserin showed a reduced incidence of side-effects which was statistically significant.

TL;DR: The results of a metallographic study of the growth of an oxide denuded surface zone and the concurrent particle coarsening which occurs during high temperature annealing of internally oxidized silver-cadmium alloys are presented in this paper.
Abstract: The results of a metallographic study of the growth of an oxide denuded surface zone and the concurrent particle coarsening which occurs during high temperature annealing of internally oxidized silver-cadmium alloys are presented. A theoretical analysis for the growth of the denuded zone is derived and verified. The kinetic parameters measured for the growth of this zone yield values for the product of the solubility of the oxide particles, Cs, and the diffusion coefficient of cadmium, DCd, which may be utilized directly in analysis of the particle coarsening kinetics. An analysis of the coarsening kinetics of the cadmium oxide particles is presented and a value for the interfacial energy between the oxide and the silver matrix of 450 mJ/m2 is derived.

TL;DR: Histologic sectioning showed there was good tissue tolerance where the disseminated root canal cement came in contact with remaining vital tissues, and microscopically such a section of tissue could be interpreted as being normal when indeed it had been fixed prior to removal and thereby made incapable of manifesting responses.

TL;DR: Trancopal at a usual dosage of 400 mg at night offers an effective alternative to a divided dose of chlordiazepoxide and not only is the beneficial effect on symptoms of anxiety similar but there is some suggestion of a greater improvement in sleep and less interference with day-time functioning.
Abstract: A double-blind, double-dummy between-patient study in general practice was carried out to compare the effectiveness of a single, night-time dosage of Trancopal and a three times daily dose of chlordiazepoxide in controlling neurotic anxiety. Ninety-three patients received either 400 mg of Trancopal at night and a chlordiazepoxide placebo capsule three times daily or 10 mg of chlordiazepoxide three times daily and one or two Trancopal placebo tablets at night. Each was treated for four weeks. Three assessments were made using a physicians' rating scale (modified Hamilton Scale). A visual analogue scale was completed by patients initially and at weekly intervals and physicians' and patients' global assessments were made at Weeks 2 and 4.Each treatment group improved considerably over the period of the study both for sleep and anxiety ratings. A statistically significant correlation was found between improvement in day-time fatigue and loss of energy and improvement in sleep disturbance only in the Trancopal...

TL;DR: The combination of fenoprofen and paracetamol was an effective analgesic combination, significantly better in success rate than dihydrocodeine tartrate and with a much lower incidence of side-effects.
Abstract: A single-blind between-patient study in general practice was made to examine the acceptability and analgesic efficacy of a combination of fenoprofen (200 mg) and paracetamol (500 mg) given 3 to 4 times daily for a period of 4 to 14 days in the treatment of acute and chronic pain. The combination was compared with dihydrocodeine tartrate (30 mg) in two groups of 75 patients suffering from a wide variety of presenting conditions, including osteo-arthritis, spondylitis, lumbago, sciatica, non-articular rheumatism and trauma. Clinical and patient assessment indicated that the combination was an effective analgesic combination, significantly better in success rate than dihydrocodeine tartrate and with a much lower incidence of side-effects (13% of patients receiving fenoprofen and paracetamol reported side-effects compared to 37% for the dihydrocodeine group). The combination demonstrated particular success in the treatment of non-articular rheumatism.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a method of producing a decorated article by placing in a predetermined position on the lid part a carrier having ink thereon, charging the base part with plastics material, and placing the carrier in a position so that the carrier extends beyond the co-operating wall of base part, and rotationally molding the article.
Abstract: A mould for producing a decorated article has a base part with a mould cavity and a lid part co-operating with but being movable away from the base part, the surface of the lid part facing the base part being substantially planar or part-cylindrical and extending beyond the wall of the base part. The wall of the base part preferably has a knife edge for engagement with the lid part. The method of producing the article comprises the steps of locating in a predetermined position on the lid part a carrier having ink thereon, charging the base part with plastics material, locating the lid part in a predetermined position on the base part so that the carrier extends beyond the co-operating wall of the base part, and rotationally moulding the article.
