TL;DR: In this paper, an explicit expression for the coupled bending and torsional dynamic stiffness matrix of a uniform beam element is derived by solving the governing differential equation of the beam element.
Abstract: Explicit expressions for the coupled bending–torsional dynamic stiffness matrix of a uniform beam element are derived in an exact sense by solving the governing differential equation of the beam. Implementation of the derived dynamic stiffness matrix in a space frame computer program is discussed with particular reference to an established algorithm to enable vibration analysis of coupled systems to be made. The application of the theory is demonstrated by an illustrative example wherein the results for a cantilever beam with a substantial amount of coupling between bending and torsion are highlighted. The correctness of the theory is confirmed to a high degree of accuracy by computed results and numerical checks.

TL;DR: In this article, the development of the Student Stress Inventory (SSI) and the cross-validation of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) are presented, and the construct validity of both the stress and burnout constructs was examined in relationship to classroom tedium and the quality of school life.
Abstract: The development of the Student Stress Inventory (SSI) and the cross-validation of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) are presented. First, gifted student data (n = 311) were subjected to factor analyses for both the SSI and the MBI to assess factorial validity; five stress and three burnout factors were evident. Second, the construct validity of both the stress and burnout constructs was examined in relationship to classroom tedium and the quality of school life. Also, 14 child stress experts assisted in analyzing content validity; the majority of these rated SSI items as being relevant to very relevant to student stress. With respect to SSI reliability, alphas ranged from .63 to .85; similarly, MBI alphas ranged from .63 to .86. Additionally, most of SSI and MBI scales and subscales were moderately to strongly interrelated. Finally, an inspection of the concurrent validity of the stress and burnout constructs revealed significant relationships between stress, burnout, tedium and, to a degree, quality of school life variables.

TL;DR: Those patients who were anxious and/or depressed were more likely to engage in avoidance-coping strategies than those who did not have emotional problems and no relationship was found for avoidance coping and either marital or sexual functioning.
Abstract: Fifty-nine women attending infertility clinics for IVF and AID treatment were interviewed and asked to complete questionnaires assessing anxiety, depression, marital functioning, sexual satisfaction and strategies for coping with infertility. Thirty-four of their partners also completed questionnaires. Both women and men experienced high levels of anxiety, but not depression. Assessment of current marital and sexual functioning did not reveal significant levels of problems. Women and men were divided into high and low distress groups and compared with respect to their use of different coping strategies. Those patients who were anxious and/or depressed were more likely to engage in avoidance-coping strategies than those who did not have emotional problems. No such relationship was found for avoidance coping and either marital or sexual functioning.

TL;DR: This article studied the effect of prosodic structure, phonotactic structure, and syllabification in the realization of segmental targets, and found that intervocalic fricatives were realized correctly provided they occurred between strong and weak syllables within a word.
Abstract: This study is concerned with the interaction between prosodic structure, phonotactic structure and syllabification in the realization of segmental targets. It is based on a detailed investigation into the realization of intervocalic fricative targets by a child who stopped fricatives word-initially, but produced them correctly word-finally. Intervocalic fricatives in different prosodic and phonotactic domains were elicited using controlled repetition tasks, backed up by speech samples. It was found that intervocalic fricatives were realized correctly provided they occurred between strong and weak syllables within a word, in a phonotactic sequence which is permissible word-finally, e.g./f/ in buffalo, selfish. Intervocalic fricatives were generally stopped in other prosodic domains, e.g./f/ in beautiful, and in other phonotactic domains, e.g./f/ in comfort. These findings have implications for the processes involved in the output of lexical phonology.

TL;DR: The alertness of hospital trainee nurses during their night shift work was assessed by recording performance at night on an arousal-sensitive unprepared simple reaction time task, strengthening the case for permanent night shifts, with careful selection of personnel, as a means of organizing night nursing in hospitals.
Abstract: The alertness of hospital trainee nurses during their night shift work was assessed by recording performance at night on an arousal-sensitive unprepared simple reaction time task. One group carried out a number of separate weeks on night shift throughout their three-year course. Here performance fell from first to seventh day of the week on night shift, implying progressive sleep deprivation. Another group covered their night work by a single three-month ‘permanent’ night shift of four (or three) nights on and three (or four) days off each week. Here initial performance level fell by the 45th night but had returned to normal by the last (90th) night. In both systems individuals varied considerably in their ability to maintain performance during sustained night work. These results strengthen the case for permanent night shifts, with careful selection of personnel, as a means of organizing night nursing in hospitals.

TL;DR: In this article, the gap between formal treatments of musical structure and the approach of cognitive psychology is discussed, focusing on the problems that are a consequence of both the failure to establish a rapport between the two approaches, and the somewhat unstructured conceptual leakage that can also be observed between them, concluding with the proposal that we need a description of musical events and the way they are performed, perceived and created by performers, listeners and composers which gives greater recognition to the mutual relationship that characterises an organism and its environment.
Abstract: While there are increasing links between musicology and the psychology of music, the two disciplines nonetheless remain distinct in terms of their aims and hence their evaluation of different findings. This paper is concerned with the gap between formal treatments of musical structure and the approach of cognitive psychology, concentrating on the problems that are a consequence of both the failure to establish a rapport between the two approaches, and the somewhat unstructured conceptual leakage that can also be observed between the two. By means of a single concrete musical example, some general characteristics of cognitive and analytical approaches are examined, and certain recommendations made, concluding with the proposal that we need a description of musical events and the way they are performed, perceived and created by performers, listeners and composers which gives greater recognition to the mutual relationship that characterises an organism and its environment.

TL;DR: In this paper, a model of the learning process is elaborated which seeks to disentangle the self-supporting justifications which grew up in the wake of post-war serial composition and analysis.
Abstract: Musical material suggests itself to composers in a variety of ways, many unexpected. But is the way in which a composer comes to particular decisions of importance to the teaching process? This paper examines the ideas of experimentation and testing with respect to research into composition. A model of the learning process is elaborated which seeks to disentangle the self-supporting justifications which grew up in the wake of post-war serial composition and analysis. An approach based on aural testing and ‘experimental analysis’ is advocated. The contribution of electroacoustic music is examined. It is argued that criteria of judgement in the learning process should be broadened to include those of a wider ‘community of interest’ and that compositional tools should be developed for the community as a whole, especially in the area of research into large scale forms. Finally, some observations on the consequences of this model to the broader world of music promotion are made.

TL;DR: It turns out that examination of accuracy of past predictions can be used to improve future predictions by a simple recalibration procedure, and sometimes this technique works dramatically well, and results are shown for some real software failure data.
Abstract: A detailed look is given to software reliability techniques. A conceptual model of the failure process is examined, and some software reliability growth models are discussed. Problems for which no current solutions exist are addressed, emphasizing the very difficult problem of safety-critical systems for which the reliability requirements can be enormously demanding.

TL;DR: In this paper, an improved boat construction is described in which a boat, having the typical elongated hull, bow and stern, has a bottom configured as a hydroplane including a transverse step spaced from the bow to the stern.
Abstract: An improved boat construction is disclosed in which a boat, having the typical elongated hull, bow and stern, has a bottom configured as a hydroplane including a transverse step spaced from the bow and stern. A well is provided in the boat bottom and extends from at least the transverse step through the boat stern and receives a powered impeller for engaging and pushing water backwards in a confined flow path within and beyond the well so as to thrust the boat forward. Vertical deflectors are positioned rearwardly of the powered impeller and are attached to the boat in the vicinity of the boat stern for engaging the backwardly moving water in the confined flow path so as to increase or decrease the size of the confined flow path of backwardly moving water emanating from the powered impeller. Immediately forward of the powered impeller in the well is a horizontal deflector which directs more or less water to the powered impeller. Trim plates are positioned immediately forward of the transverse step in the boat bottom for independent and joint operation. The above components provide improved boat speed and controlled boat performance, including operation in shallow water, as well as greater overall control of trim and bank movements.

TL;DR: In this article, the 13C chemical shifts and 13C 1H coupling constants of methoxycoumarins are reported and the value of these effects in the assignment of peri-substituted compounds is illustrated.
Abstract: The 13C chemical shifts and 13C1H coupling constants of some methoxycoumarins are reported. Some earlier spectral assignments, including those for citropten (limettin), require revision. Methoxy substituent effects on longrange 13C1H couplings in coumarins are highlighted. Peri-proximity effects for the methyl-methoxy and methoxy-methyl couples are derived, and the value of these effects in the assignment of peri-substituted compounds is illustrated.

TL;DR: Comparisons were limited to bimanual, sagittal plane lifting, which of all manual handling activities has been studied the most comprehensively, except that pushing and pulling data were compared from the psychophysics and intra-abdominal pressure ('force limits') databases.
Abstract: There has been much effort in recent years to quantify manual handling capabilities. Four main techniques have been used to this end; biomechanical modelling; the measurement of intra-abdominal pressure; psychophysics; and metabolic/physiological criteria. The aim of this study was to compare quantitatively the data produced from the first three techniques. The comparisons were limited to bimanual, sagittal plane lifting, which of all manual handling activities has been studied the most comprehensively, except that pushing and pulling data were compared from the psychophysics and intra-abdominal pressure (‘force limits’) databases. It was found that the data from ‘force limits’ proposed weights for bimanual lifting in the sagittal plane are lower than those reported to be psychophysically acceptable except for lifting close to and around the shoulder. The closest agreement between the databases was for lifting from an origin above knuckle height. The ‘force limits’ data were found to propose weights of li...

TL;DR: Involuntary risk has a new meaning today than the term did when used in 1969 by Chauncey Starr as mentioned in this paper, who believed that the public, in its trust in authority, would accept an imposed risk, and he saw the difficulty with involuntary risk as one of delay in feedback time.

Abstract: A differential feeder protection that utilizes voltage and current signals is described. This approach obviates the need for relay bias to compensate for capacitance spill current, thus improving the relay sensitivity. From a practical point of view, the scheme has been designed to simplify the digital hardware requirements and reduce the bandwidth requirements for signal transmission over a fiber-optic link. >

TL;DR: This paper showed that priming in word fragment completion was enhanced for words that had been generated at study, from the same fragments as those used at test, rather than read because subjects were unaware that any memory test occurred, this generation effect in primed fragment completion does not depend on conscious recollection.
Abstract: Priming refers to the facilitatory effects of a prior experience on the performance of some cognitive task or skill In a word-fragment completion task, priming is shown if words from a previously presented study list are more likely to be completed than other words An experiment is described which shows that priming in word-fragment completion was enhanced for words that had been generated at study, from the same fragments as those used at test, rather than read Because subjects were unaware that any memory test occurred, this generation effect in primed fragment completion does not depend on conscious recollection It is argued that the effect arises in some memory system other than episodic memory, and reflects data-driven rather than conceptually driven processing

TL;DR: This paper presents a treatment program for the development of personal hygiene behavior in a patient who was 5 years post herpes simplex encephalitis, who has severe memory and organizational problems, but is of average overall intelligence.
Abstract: This paper presents a treatment program for the development of personal hygiene behavior in a patient who was 5 years post herpes simplex encephalitis. The patient has severe memory and organizational problems, but is of average overall intelligence. The program consists in part of chaining a series of nine discrete activities by using linking phrases. The program allowed the patient to structure his behavior and wash in a well-organized nonrepetitive way. Results are discussed in the light of previous failures to affect behavior using apparently similar methods.

TL;DR: The overall proportion of men who continued to engage in very high-risk sexual activity was small, however a different picture emerged if the sample was analysed in terms of the number of encounters with different men during the past year.
Abstract: A postal questionnaire survey of 262 homosexual men was carried out to investigate patterns of sexual behaviour and the use of condoms. Two hundred and twenty-nine of these subjects had been sexually active during the past year, with the mean number of male sexual partners being 8.09. One hundred and eighty men engaged in oral sex, and 117 ejaculated during this activity, of whom 103 (88%) did not use a condom. One hundred and sixteen men had engaged in insertive anal intercourse in the past year, and 102 had ejaculated during this activity. Of these, 32 did not use a condom. Some, however, only engaged in this activity within a monogamous relationship. The overall proportion of men who continued to engage in very high-risk sexual activity was small, however a different picture emerged if the sample was analysed in terms of the number of encounters with different men during the past year. Of the total estimated number of such encounters, almost half involved anal intercourse, and about half of these were unprotected. The reason for the apparent discrepancy is that those who continue to engage in high risk behaviour tend to be particularly sexually active.

TL;DR: Appropriate analytical techniques to make use of small format oblique photographs for photogrammetry are outlined, including several transformation methods and associated problems relating to the inclusion of reseau measurements.
Abstract: Appropriate analytical techniques to make use of small format oblique photographs for photogrammetry are outlined, including several transformation methods and associated problems relating to the inclusion of reseau measurements. Various options are compared by applying the techniques to a series of hand-held, small format oblique aerial photographs. The accuracies of derived coordinates are examined and show that the small format camera can be considered to be of photogrammetric importance. Some of the transformation methods associated with the use of reseau photography to correct for image deformation are outlined and compared in terms of their ability to model specific problems associated with semi-metric photography.

TL;DR: The findings suggest that the relocation of services to the community in itself will not automatically overcome some of the difficulties associated with institutional care, and that the nature of a service is as important as its location.
Abstract: This study evaluates and compares aspects of residential care in a community hostel setting and a hospital setting for people with a psychiatric disability. The clients were assessed to establish their level of general functioning, the comparison indicating there was no significant difference between the two groups on the measure used. A previously published protocol was used as a method of comparing the units. The findings indicated that the hospital unit was more individually orientated both in practices and staff attitudes, and had staff who were more optimistic about clients' potential accomplishments. No differences were found between perceived involvement of staff in decision making, or staff–resident interactions. These findings have implications for the ‘Care in the Community’ movement, as they indicate that the nature of a service is as important as its location. They suggest that the relocation of services to the community in itself will not automatically overcome some of the difficulties associated with institutional care.

TL;DR: An exact area registration process which automatically removes all residual distortion due to the geometry of the stereo imaging system is demonstrated and allows the match judgement to be based upon an analysis of the residual differences of structure and intensity existing after all differences due to geometrical distortion have been corrected.
Abstract: Results are described for an algorithm that automatically registers two stereo images. An exact area registration process which automatically removes all residual distortion due to the geometry of the stereo imaging system is demonstrated. This process allows the match judgement to be based upon an analysis of the residual differences of structure and intensity existing after all differences due to geometrical distortion have been corrected. The accuracy in general seems to be of the order of 1% of range, since the average distance to the model was about 600 mm and the RMS error in range was about 6 mm. The fact that the maximum error was greater by a factor of five indicates that there were still some mismatched points and the procedures followed in the stereo ranging algorithm were not sufficient. Further modifications to the algorithm are needed. >
