The use of fluorescent probes in immunochemistry.

Abstract: The limitations and advantages of particular dyes for labelling proteins and other biological materials are discussed. Methods available for conjugating dyes to proteins are outlined. Following a discussion of double labelling methods the use of photoactivatable fluorochromes and time resolved fluorescence methodologies are outlined. The reasons for the photoinstability of some fluorochromes are discussed and methods for overcoming the problem are described.

Grounded theory sampling: The contribution of reflexivity

Abstract: This paper explores the value of reflexivity for Glaserian grounded theory methodology, using examples drawn from experiences recruiting a sample for a doctoral research project. Reflexivity is highly relevant for grounded theory research due to its foundations in symbolic interactionism. In this study, reflexivity facilitated the identification of factors influencing sample recruitment at a process and a personal level. It provides a vehicle for the identification of the impact of self on the research relationship. Glaser’s (1978, 1992) early works situated personal experience within theoretical sensitivity, and as data to be included within constant comparative analysis method. His later writings (Glaser, 2001) explicitly reject reflexivity as a distraction from the data, seeing constant comparative analysis as having the ability to expose researcher effects on the data. Consultation with children with autistic spectrum disorders about their experience of short-term residential care

Abstract: Summary Consultation with children receiving services from social services departments is required by international and national legislation. Research has been undertaken examining the experience of children with disabilities receiving short-term care. However, none of these studies has focused on autistic spectrum disorders (ASDs). The present paper suggests that this condition's characteristics affect the ability of children with ASDs to participate in consultation. Case studies were undertaken investigating the impact of the characteristics of autism upon researchers' abilities to elicit children's opinions about their experience of short-term residential care. Factors which maximized the children's input and the accuracy of results are identified.

Designing presentation in multimedia interfaces

Abstract: Current Multimedia interfaces are created primarily by intuition. Development of a method for analysis and design of Multimedia presentation interfaces is described. The study investigates task based information analysis, persistence of information, selective attention and concurrency in presentation. The method gives an agenda of issues, diagrams and techniques for specification, and guidelines for media selection and presentation scripting. Use of the method is illustrated with an example from a shipboard emergency management system.
