TL;DR: A Nd:YAG/KNbO(3) composite-material microchip laser has generated blue radiation at 473 nm with output powers of 1mW when diode laser pumped and 9 mW when Ti:sapphire laser pumped.
Abstract: A Nd:YAG/KNbO(3) composite-material microchip laser has generated blue radiation at 473 nm with output powers of 1 mW when diode laser pumped and 9 mW when Ti:sapphire laser pumped. The fundamental radiation generated by the quasi-three-level (4)F(3/2)-(4)I(9/2) transition in Nd:YAG at 946 nm was frequency doubled in KNbO(3) angle cut to be type I critically phase matched at 45 degrees C. Despite the normally isotropic nature of Nd:YAG, the fundamental is emitted linearly polarized and orthogonal to the linearly polarized blue radiation.

TL;DR: In this article, a simple two-dimensional rod and pivot model is proposed for the mechanical structure of the lamprey, each pivot being controlled by a muscle segment attached via perpendicular extensions to the two rods.
Abstract: A simple two-dimensional rod and pivot model is proposed for the mechanical structure of the lamprey, each pivot being controlled by a muscle segment attached via perpendicular extensions to the two rods. The elastic and viscous properties of the body tissues (including muscle) are described as linear functions of the relative displacement and angular velocity of the rods at each pivot. The contractile properties of the muscle are introduced as time-dependent forcing torques at the pivots, which are generated by a travelling wave of activation. The angles between the rods at each pivot are used as adapted coordinates, and the equations of motion are linearized by assuming low curvature dynamics, corresponding to slow swimming speeds. Investigation of these equations with varying viscous and elastic parameters leads to a reconstruction of a lamprey viewed in motion on a smooth flat surface out of water. The most striking feature is of an apparently standing wave motion, which is indeed observed in the real animal but which on careful examination in the model corresponds to a travelling wave of varying amplitude.

TL;DR: It is shown that an important minority are handicapped and these adults are primarily cared for by their families in particular by elderly parents.
Abstract: Who are the men and women who are single in their mid-30s? This study which uses life history data for a British cohort born in 1946 shows that an important minority are handicapped and these adults are primarily cared for by their families in particular by elderly parents. Celibates tend to be more introverted ambitious and to have older marrying parents than their ever-married peers. Single women differ from single men. The women are more likely to be of higher ability to be graduates and to be in high status occupations while single men are more likely to be members of the lowest social class or unemployed. The great majority of single people live either with their parents or on their own. (authors)

TL;DR: A pneumatic oxygen conserving device includes a reservoir of pressurized gas delivered upon inhalation through a single-lumen cannula as discussed by the authors, which is interrupted by a series of interconnected passages and chambers, including a check valve which is acted upon by the flow of gas being delivered through the delivery outlet of the device.
Abstract: A pneumatic oxygen conserving device includes a reservoir of pressurized gas delivered upon inhalation through a single-lumen cannula. Gas flow is interrupted by a series of interconnected passages and chambers, including a check valve which is acted upon by the flow of gas being delivered through the delivery outlet of the device. The device is self regulating to the extent that oxygen pulses of appropriate volume are delivered irrespective of the breathing rate of the user. The device includes a plate with various passages and chambers defined therein in such a way as to reduce the overall length of the device.
