TL;DR: In this article, the authors validate conceptual frameworks for strategic management development and test the hypothesis that the objectives and design of a strategic management program need to match the organisation's level of commitment to strategic management and the degree of maturity of its strategic management processes and competencies, in order that the programme can be effective in enhancing the strategic capability of the organisation.
Abstract: Purpose – To validate conceptual frameworks for strategic management development. Also, to test the hypothesis that the objectives and design of a strategic management development programme need to match the organisation's level of commitment to strategic management and the degree of maturity of its strategic management processes and competencies, in order that the programme can be effective in enhancing the strategic capability of the organisation.Design/methodology/approach – Earlier work by the author (based on literature review and one case study) had generated two conceptual models which could help in the understanding of strategic management development. One provides a life‐cycle typology matching an organisation's level of commitment to strategic management with the design of an effective strategic management development programme. The second provides a causal network showing how strategic management capability may be developed. In this paper case study research is reported from six organisations t...

TL;DR: The use of two behavioural methods—response cost and cognitive overlearning—in the treatment of a behaviourally disturbed, herpes simplex encephalitis survivor who presented with a dysexecutive syndrome resulted in significant statistical and clinical change within sessions.
Abstract: Damage to the frontal lobes frequently precedes the development of behavioural disorders that may prevent an individual gaining access to rehabilitation services. In recent years the use of behaviour modification, particularly programmes based on the use of positive reinforcement and time-out, has been increasingly reported in the literature as a means of remediating behaviour disturbance. However, it is becoming clear that there is a subgroup of brain-injured individuals who do not respond to the use of such methods and who present with the “Dysexecutive Syndrome”, which imposes neuropsychological constraints on their ability to learn using these techniques. This study describes the use of two behavioural methods—response cost and cognitive overlearning—in the treatment of a behaviourally disturbed, herpes simplex encephalitis survivor who presented with a dysexecutive syndrome. Treatment resulted in significant statistical and clinical change within sessions. This change was found to have gener...

TL;DR: The challenge for surveillance in Europe is to ensure that it has the capacity to meet both the needs of today and the diseases of the future.
Abstract: In the 1960s and 1970s, communicable disease seemed a minor threat, but since then the emergence of new infections and the reemergence of old diseases has provoked a renewed focus on European communicable disease surveillance and control A "network approach" among European countries has been successful in detecting some international outbreaks, but management and funding aspects remain unresolved Surveillance outside the European Union has faced new challenges as a result of economic and political change following the collapse of communism Subsequently, innovative international surveillance schemes are currently being implemented in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union The challenge for surveillance in Europe is to ensure that it has the capacity to meet both the needs of today and the diseases of the future
