Single-crystal ruby fiber temperature sensor

Abstract: Single-crystal ruby fibers with nominal diameters in the range from 80 to 500 μm and lengths up to 170 mm have been produced using the laser heated miniature pedestal growth technique. These fibers were tested for use as the basis of fiber optic temperature sensors. Characterization of the fiber fluorescence properties and comparison to bulk samples together with their high melting point indicate their potential for fluorescence-based sensing at extremely elevated temperatures. Good geometrical matching with current fiber optic technology and the use of phase-locked detection techniques also allow high resolution measurements to be obtained.

Object-oriented systems development: survey of structured methods

Abstract: Concepts of object-oriented system programming and system design are reviewed in the light of previous research on systems development methodologies. Key principles are identified and a selection of system development methods is then judged against these principles to determine their concordance with object-oriented design. The advantages of object-oriented system development are reviewed in the light of the study of structured system development methods.

The Nature of Posttraumatic Growth in Adult Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse.

Abstract: Potential negative sequelae for survivors of child sexual abuse is well documented. However, growing evidence suggests that some individuals who actively cope with traumatic events can progress from a negative trajectory toward positive psychological change, often termed posttraumatic growth. Current posttraumatic growth theories may be of limited applicability to developmental considerations involved in child sexual abuse. This explorative study examines posttraumatic growth among adult female survivors of child sexual abuse. In-depth interviews were conducted with six participants who believed they had grown through coping with their abuse. Data was analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Three superordinate and nine subordinate themes were identified and explored. Some participants reported experiencing growth and distress simultaneously. Theoretical and clinical implications are examined in relation to the study's findings.

Childhood and the Construction of Ethnic Identities in a Global Age: A Dramatic Encounter.

Abstract: Recent social theory has alerted us to the way globalization and allied social changes have proved unsettling for established identities. This article explores the implications of recent developments in social theory for our understanding of childhood. Drawing upon children's experience of drama education, it examines how schools can provide opportunities for children to become active agents in the construction of their own identities. Particular attention is placed on the production of new ethnic identities.

Antrectomy with Roux‐en‐Y anastomosis in the treatment of peptic oesophagitis with stricture

Abstract: A series of 8 patients with severe oesophageal strictures secondary to reflux oesophagitis who have been treated by antrectomy with Roux-en- Y anastomosis is described. There was 1 postoperative death. The remaining patients have been completely relieved of heartburn and all have had a dramatic improvement in their dysphagia. This method of treatment is strongly recommended for patients who have had prior surgery to the hiatus which has failed, and for those who are too elderly or frail to withstand a direct attack on their oesophageal stricture.
