Abstract: Access and mobility are important dimensions of quality of life. For wheelchair users, everyday trips are often fraught with problems, with many barriers imperceptible to the able-bodied, hindering or totally restricting movement. This paper describes a project undertaken with wheelchair users, which has developed, tested and applied a Geographic Information System model. This model acts both as a navigational device for wheelchairs users 2013 enabling them to make informed route choices through urban places 2013 and as a decision support and planning tool for urban planners 2013 making visible the ways in which built environments are often distorted and hostile spaces for wheelchair users.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Findings are presented of the second phase of a longitudinal study of families created through gamete donation. METHODS: At the time of the child’s second birthday, 46 donor insemination families and 48 egg donation families were compared with 68 natural conception families on standardized interview and questionnaire measures of the psychological well being of the parents, parent – child relationships and the psychological development of the child. RESULTS: The gamete donation mothers showed a trend towards greater pleasure in their child accompanied by a perception of their child as more vulnerable, with egg donation mothers tending towards greater pleasure and donor insemination mothers tending towards greater concern. The fathers did not differ on any of the variables under study. CONCLUSIONS: The findings from this recent cohort add further weight to the growing body of research showing that the absence of a genetic link between a parent and a child does not necessarily jeopardize the development of a positive relationship between them.

Abstract: Aggressive behaviour creates a significant challenge in neurorehabilitation. Despite the success in using behaviour modification principles in the treatment of post-acute behavioural problems, psychopharmacological approaches to the management of aggression are more frequently reported. However, inconsistencies apparent in the literature hinder inter-study comparisons of treatment methods. These include severity of brain injury, neuropsychological status and rigour of experimental methodology used. Data about aggression is also inconsistently reported, especially with regard to classification and severity. Descriptions of how aggressive behaviour responded to pre-treatment is also generally absent. In this paper an observational rating scale is described in an attempt to address these inconsistencies. The Overt Aggression Scale has been modified by increasing the range of interventions to reflect current practice in neurorehabilitation, and by changing the language to make it suitable for UK users. A range of antecedents has also been added to make the scale useful in behavioural analysis. Preliminary results indicate inter-rater reliability is good, and it is a valid indicator of type and severity of aggression. Antecedents and interventions used in the management of aggressive behaviours in neurorehabilitation are also illustrated. Clinical use of the scale is also discussed.

Abstract: Chemical reactions between latent fingerprints and a variety of metal surfaces are investigated by heating the metal up to temperatures of approximately 600 degrees C after deposition of the fingerprint. Ionic salts present in the fingerprint residue corrode the metal surface to produce an image of the fingerprint that is both durable and resistant to cleaning of the metal. The degree of fingerprint enhancement appears independent of the elapsed time between deposition and heating but is very dependent on both the composition of the metal and the level of salt secretion by the fingerprint donor. Results are presented that show practical applications for the enhancement to fingerprints deposited in arson crime scenes, contaminated by spray painting, or deposited on brass cartridge cases prior to discharge. The corrosion of the metal surface is further exploited by the demonstration of a novel technique for fingerprint enhancement based on the electrostatic charging of the metal and then the preferential adherence of a metallic powder to the corroded part of the metal surface.
