TL;DR: In this paper, a survey of 1,000 internationalized enterprises located in the main urban conurbations of England was conducted to compare the experience of small enterprises with their medium and large-scale counterparts.
Abstract: Previous research on the internationalization of the small firm explored the relationship between the adoption of a global orientation and strategic thinking. However, there was difference in opinion between those arguing that there is a positive relationship between the two variables and others who contended that small firms may internationalize by adopting a passive or reactive approach to the external environment. Within this context, this study sets out to further the discussion by comparing the experience of small enterprises with their medium and large-scale counterparts. In doing so, it draws upon the findings of survey of 1,000 internationalized enterprises located in the main urban conurbations of England. The results suggest that overall there is little disparity in strategy development among internationalized enterprises of different sizes. However, whereas the incidence of strategic behavior among medium and large businesses increases with the complexity of international operations, this is not the case for small firms.

TL;DR: Two single configurational coordinate models are proposed to interpret the temperature dependence of Cr 3+ fluorescence in materials with low and high crystal-field strength.
Abstract: The temperature dependences of the fluorescence lifetimes of ${\mathrm{Cr}}^{3+}$ doped insulating crystals, which have been used as temperature-sensing elements or have such potential uses for different temperature regions, are reviewed in terms of the crystal-field strength. Two single configurational coordinate models are proposed to interpret the temperature dependence of ${\mathrm{Cr}}^{3+}$ fluorescence in materials with low and high crystal-field strength. The validities of the two models are demonstrated by their close fit to the lifetime data of the ${\mathrm{Cr}}^{3+}$ fluorescence in appropriate materials. As was shown in thermometric applications, the expressions obtained for the temperature dependence of the fluorescence lifetimes, deduced from the proposed models, are of use as empirical calibration formulae in the assessment of various ${\mathrm{Cr}}^{3+}$ fluorescence lifetime-based thermometers.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the processes and objectives of qualitative longitudinal analysis in evaluation research, using a recent evaluation study (the evaluation of the Job Retention and Rehabilitation Pilot) as an example.
Abstract: This article describes the processes and objectives of qualitative longitudinal analysis in evaluation research, using a recent evaluation study – the evaluation of the Job Retention and Rehabilitation Pilot – as an example. It describes evaluation research as involving an interplay between four domains of change: individual, service, policy and structural, which makes longitudinal qualitative research a particularly rich data source. It outlines different types of change that may be evident: narrative change, reinterpretation by either participant or researcher, and the absence of change. The article describes how the Framework analysis method was used to analyse longitudinal qualitative research. It examines how the data can be read in different ways to combine cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis, and theme, case and group analysis, and discusses the kind of questions that can be asked of change in longitudinal qualitative evaluation studies.

TL;DR: This article tested the role of academic language, perspective taking, and complex reasoning in explaining variance in end-of-year GISA scores, and found that these three skill domains not frequently attended to in instruction or in theories of reading comprehension predict outcomes on an assessment of deep reading comprehension.
Abstract: Deep reading comprehension refers to the process required to succeed at tasks defined by the Common Core State Literacy Standards, as well as to achieve proficiency on the more challenging reading tasks in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) framework. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that three skill domains not frequently attended to in instruction or in theories of reading comprehension—academic language, perspective taking, and complex reasoning—predict outcomes on an assessment of deep reading comprehension. The Global Integrated Scenario-based Assessment (GISA; O'Reilly, Weeks, Sabatini, Halderman, & Steinberg, 2014) is designed to reflect students' abilities to evaluate texts, integrate information from an array of texts, and use textual evidence to formulate a position, all features of deep reading comprehension. We tested the role of academic language, perspective taking, and complex reasoning in explaining variance in end-of-year GISA scores, contr...
