TL;DR: In this paper, a mixed methods study adds to a growing international literature on the nature of language teachers' engagement with and in research by examining such engagement in the context of college English teaching in China.
Abstract: This mixed methods study adds to a growing international literature on the nature of language teachers' engagement with and in research by examining such engagement in the context of college English teaching in China. Questionnaire responses from 725 college English teachers and interviews with 20 of these teachers indicate that, although they were expected to be research-active, their reported levels of reading and doing research were moderate. An analysis of the factors behind this level of engagement reveals unproductive linear and instrumental conceptions among teachers of the relationship between research knowledge and classroom practice. A perceived discrepancy was also found between teachers' views about the research activity expected of them and the support they received from their institutions to facilitate such work. The uncertainty teachers experienced in relation to research engagement was also shaped by tensions between their views of research and its purpose and the criteria for recognizing research employed by their institutions. This study problematizes the notion of teacher as researcher by highlighting many interactive personal, interpersonal, and institutional factors which shape the extent to which teachers can be research-engaged. The article concludes by suggesting key questions that language teaching organizations wanting to promote teacher research engagement must ask.

TL;DR: Circular dichroism and specific activity investigations indicated that the GO/SiO(2) composites exhibited favorable biocompatibility, characterized by virtually no effect on the conformation and activity of Hb after adsorption/desorption.
Abstract: Graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets have been immobilized onto SiO(2) particles through electrostatic interactions by surface assembly. The surface-assembled composite material was characterized by means of SEM and FTIR and UV/Vis spectroscopy to reveal an assembling ratio of 2.3% (w/w, GO/SiO(2)). The GO/SiO(2) composites were subsequently used, for the first time, as adsorbents for the adsorption/isolation of proteins. Selective isolation of proteins of interest, namely, hemoglobin (Hb) in this case, from complex sample matrices, for example, human whole blood, could be obtained by carefully manipulating the adsorption/desorption process. At pH 7, an adsorption of 85% was achieved for Hb (70 mg L(-1)) in sample solution (1.0 mL) by the GO/SiO(2) composites (3.0 mg). The adsorption behavior was consistent with the Langmuir adsorption model, corresponding to a theoretical adsorption capacity of 50.5 mg g(-1) for Hb. The retained Hb could be readily recovered by using a Tris-HCl buffer at pH 8.9 to give a recovery of 80%. Circular dichroism and specific activity investigations indicated that the GO/SiO(2) composites exhibited favorable biocompatibility, characterized by virtually no effect on the conformation and activity of Hb after adsorption/desorption. The composites were used for the selective isolation of Hb from human whole blood and achieved satisfactory results by assaying with sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.

Abstract: This paper is concerned with the observer-based output feedback control problem for Takagi and Sugeno fuzzy systems with partly immeasurable premise variables. By using measurable premise variables and estimations of immeasurable premise variables of fuzzy models as the premise variables of fuzzy controllers, a new fuzzy control scheme is proposed. Further by constructing a set-theoretic description of fuzzy systems, the equivalence class theory in set theory is applied for designing fuzzy controllers, then the partly measurable premise variables are effectively used in the proposed conditions. In the existing fuzzy control schemes, the fuzzy weight functions are unaccessible on line due to the partly immeasurable premise variables, so that the partly measurable premise variables cannot be directly used, which might introduce some conservatism. Different from the existing results, the new condition can make better use of measurable premise variables via the proposed control scheme. A numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

TL;DR: An analytical model is developed to evaluate the performance of MCTRP in terms of the average full ring delay, emergency message delay, and ring throughput, and the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed MCT RP are demonstrated.
Abstract: This paper proposes a multi-channel token ring media access control (MAC) protocol (MCTRP) for inter-vehicle communications (IVC). Through adaptive ring coordination and channel scheduling, vehicles are autonomously organized into multiple rings operating on different service channels. Based on the multi-channel ring structure, emergency messages can be disseminated with a low delay. With the token based data exchange protocol, the network throughput is further improved for non-safety multimedia applications. An analytical model is developed to evaluate the performance of MCTRP in terms of the average full ring delay, emergency message delay, and ring throughput. Extensive simulations with ns-2 are conducted to validate the analytical model and demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed MCTRP.

TL;DR: A novel visual transformation CNN (VT-CNN) is proposed in this paper to overcome the limitation of traditional method in a feature extraction procedure and highlight the superiority of the proposed method in industrial applications.
Abstract: In most current nondestructive testing systems, a magnetic flux leakage (MFL) method is widely used in various industry fields, where the structural integrity of specimens is of vital importance. The estimation of defect size in specimen from the MFL measurements is a key and difficult problem. The traditional methods have low precision because feature extraction procedure relies on prior knowledge and the ability of designer. Inspired by the idea of convolutional neural network (CNN), a novel visual transformation CNN (VT-CNN) is proposed in this paper to overcome the limitation of traditional method in a feature extraction procedure. By adding a visual transformation layer according to the characteristics of the MFL measurements, the VT-CNN can distinguish the defect feature with different sizes more accurately. Moreover, since the VT-CNN method is designed based on the deep learning theory, more industrial big data with accurate label should be used to train the network. Due to the difficulty of making real industrial big data, a novel mesher magnetic dipole model is designed to simulate this industrial process. A large simulated MFL measurement of irregular defects produced by this model can increase the number of training samples and improve the robustness of the network. Experiments to estimate natural corrosion defects on real industrial pipelines are performed to validate the proposed framework. The experimental results are illustrated in detail, which highlights the superiority of the proposed method in industrial applications.
