Abstract: The past two decades have witnessed the rapid growth of thermoelectric (TE) research. Novel concepts and paradigms are described here that have emerged, targeting superior TE materials and higher TE performance. These superior aspects include band convergence, "phonon-glass electron-crystal", multiscale phonon scattering, resonant states, anharmonicity, etc. Based on these concepts, some new TE materials with distinct features have been identified, including solids with high band degeneracy, with cages in which atoms rattle, with nanostructures at various length scales, etc. In addition, the performance of classical materials has been improved remarkably. However, the figure of merit zT of most TE materials is still lower than 2.0, generally around 1.0, due to interrelated TE properties. In order to realize an "overall zT > 2.0," it is imperative that the interrelated properties are decoupled more thoroughly, or new degrees of freedom are added to the overall optimization problem. The electrical and thermal transport must be synergistically optimized. Here, a detailed discussion about the commonly adopted strategies to optimize individual TE properties is presented. Then, four main compromises between the TE properties are elaborated from the point of view of the underlying mechanisms and decoupling strategies. Finally, some representative systems of synergistic optimization are also presented, which can serve as references for other TE materials. In conclusion, some of the newest ideas for the future are discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, a methodology for imposing a minimum length scale on structural members in discretized topology optimization problems is described, where nodal variables are implemented as the design variables and are projected onto element space to determine the element volume fractions that traditionally define topology.
Abstract: A methodology for imposing a minimum length scale on structural members in discretized topology optimization problems is described. Nodal variables are implemented as the design variables and are projected onto element space to determine the element volume fractions that traditionally define topology. The projection is made via mesh independent functions that are based upon the minimum length scale. A simple linear projection scheme and a non-linear scheme using a regularized Heaviside step function to achieve nearly 0–1 solutions are examined. The new approach is demonstrated on the minimum compliance problem and the popular SIMP method is used to penalize the stiffness of intermediate volume fraction elements. Solutions are shown to meet user-defined length scale criterion without additional constraints, penalty functions or sensitivity filters. No instances of mesh dependence or checkerboard patterns have been observed. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors conduct a "netnographic" analysis of two prominent retro brands, the Volkswagen New Beetle and Star Wars: Episode I-The Phantom Menace, that reveals the importance of Allegory (brand story), Aura (brand essence), Arcadia (idealized community), and Antinomy (brand paradox).
Abstract: Retro brands are relaunched historical brands with updated features. The authors conduct a “netnographic” analysis of two prominent retro brands, the Volkswagen New Beetle and Star Wars: Episode I—The Phantom Menace, that reveals the importance of Allegory (brand story), Aura (brand essence), Arcadia (idealized community), and Antinomy (brand paradox). Retro brand meanings are predicated on a utopian communal element and an enlivening paradoxical essence. Retro brand management involves an uneasy, cocreative, and occasionally clamorous alliance between producers and consumers.

TL;DR: In this paper, a detailed characterization of the volatility in the deutsche mark-dollar foreign exchange market using an annual sample of five-minute returns is provided, which captures the intraday activity patterns, the macroeconomic announcements, and the volatility persistence known from daily returns.
Abstract: This paper provides a detailed characterization of the volatility in the deutsche mark-dollar foreign exchange market using an annual sample of five-minute returns. The approach captures the intraday activity patterns, the macroeconomic announcements, and the volatility persistence (ARCH) known from daily returns. The different features are separately quantified and shown to account for a substantial fraction of return variability, both at the intraday and daily level. The implications of the results for the interpretation of the fundamental "driving forces" behind the volatility process is also discussed. THE EFFICIENT MARKET HYPOTHESIS contends that financial asset prices provide rational assessments of fundamental values and future payoffs. By implication, price changes should reflect the arrival and processing of all relevant new information. However, the proportion of return variability that can be ascribed to public news announcements is low. For example, Cutler, Poterba, and Summers (1989) find that even the largest daily price changes in the stock market generally cannot be associated with any significant economic news.1 Moreover, proxies for the flow of public information, e.g., the number of news items released by Reuter's News Service (Berry and HIowe (1994)) or Dow Jones & Company (Mitchell and Mulherin (1994)) explain little of the overall variation. Thus, if private information is ruled out, proponents of rational price formation have to assert the existence of important news items
