Abstract: Computer based learning has enjoyed an increasing role in mainstream education with the development of more powerful personal computers available at a lower price. This article reviews work on a specific form of computer software, virtual environments. It aims to illustrate the potential of this computer application in the education and rehabilitation of people with intellectual disabilities. Virtual environments appear to be a fruitful method of teaching skills for independent living to people with intellectual disabilities. Initial studies demonstrate that learning in this way transfers to the real life situation in which the skills are required. However, to effectively exploit their educational potential, interaction with virtual environments needs to be guided. This can be done using a human tutor and a software tutor and preliminary findings from current research suggest guidelines for the effective employment of both. Future directions involve ensuring the availability of the software, making the technology accessible to a wider range of users and researching staff support to ensure that use is facilitated and that this technology is appropriately exploited.

Abstract: Mental set is the tendency to solve certain problems in a fixed way based on previous solutions to similar problems. The moment of insight occurs when a problem cannot be solved using solution methods suggested by prior experience and the problem solver suddenly realizes that the solution requires different solution methods. Mental set and insight have often been linked together and yet no attempt thus far has systematically examined the interplay between the two. Three experiments are presented that examine the extent to which sets of noninsight and insight problems affect the subsequent solutions of insight test problems. The results indicate a subtle interplay between mental set and insight: when the set involves noninsight problems, no mental set effects are shown for the insight test problems, yet when the set involves insight problems, both facilitation and inhibition can be seen depending on the type of insight problem presented in the set. A two process model is detailed to explain these findings that combines the representational change mechanism with that of proceduralization.

A group of academics and public servants later met under the aegis of the ESRC's Programme on Information and Communication Technology to discuss the implications of central government's current programmes of management change. This article presents the academic organizers’ analysis of a range of issues which emerged from this meeting.

Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to assess the issues currently involved in social and environmental sustainability in the clothing industry.Design/methodology/approach – The paper adopts a case study approach to investigate a business that operates successfully in this challenging market.Findings – As a consequence of increasing demand for ethical clothing, it has become standard practice for UK clothing retailers to develop CSR policies which impact upon their methods of garment sourcing and partnerships with suppliers. There is also a significant trend for retailers to offer ethical clothing ranges made from organic cotton or produced by Fair Trade manufacturers. The paper includes a case study on People Tree, which sells Fair Trade clothing sourced from developing countries. Abstract: This paper reports on one aspect of a European Union‐funded research project, focusing in exploring factors that influence lifelong learning. Influencing factors were categorised as those that inhibit and those that support a learning orientation. Research findings suggest that the same factors could have both supportive and inhibiting influence, highlighting the complexity and subjectivity of investigating the influence of HRD practices and other organisational features on perceptions of learning. The paper also identifies key issues for management – that is, how to manage these factors to further encourage, promote, capture and act on the wide range of learning opportunities apparent in work organisations. It is argued that identifying such factors within an organisation is an important step in enabling managers and other HRD practitioners to recognise how learning might be hindered or helped within that context, before considering strategies and practices to better manage and cope with these influences.
