The psychology of lottery gambling

Abstract: This paper examines the major factors in the psychology of lottery gambling (including instant scratchcard lotteries and video lottery terminals) and argues that success is due to a number of simple and inter‐related factors. Part of the popularity of lotteries is that they offer a low cost chance of winning a very large jackpot prize, i.e. without the huge jackpot very few people would play. However, there are other important maintenance factors including: (i) successful advertising and television coverage; (ii) a general ignorance of probability theory; (iii) entrapment; (iv) manufacturing credibility; and (v) use of heuristics (e.g. illusion of control, flexible attributions, hindsight bias, availability bias, representativeness bias). The paper also argues that some types of lottery game (i.e. instant scratchcards and video lottery terminals) can stimulate excessive and problematic Play.

A Population Based Analysis of Subclinical Psychosis and Help-Seeking Behavior

Abstract: Clinically defined psychosis is recognizable and distinguishable from nonclinical or subclinical psychosis by virtue of its clinical relevance (ie, its associated distress and its need for care and/or treatment). According to the continuum hypothesis, subclinical psychosis is merely quantitatively different from more extreme phenotypic expressions and as such should also be indicative of distress and help-seeking behavior but to a lesser extent. Using data from the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey, the current study focused on self-reported psychosis and help-seeking experiences in a general population sample free from clinically defined psychosis (N = 7266). After statistically controlling for the effects of a series of potential help-seeking correlates the findings showed that subclinical psychosis symptom experience was significantly associated with various forms of help-seeking behavior. Individuals who reported subclinical experiences of thought control, paranoia, and strange experiences were on average 2 times more likely to attend their general practitioner for emotional problems compared with those individuals who reported no psychosis. Individuals who reported subclinical experiences of paranoia were 3 times more likely to be in receipt of counseling/therapy compared with those with no experience of paranoia. Multiple subclinical psychotic experiences also predicted elevated help-seeking behavior. These findings may have a positive impact on the detection of individuals who are at increased risk of psychological distress and aid in the design and implementation of more effective treatments at both clinical and subclinical levels.

The Gravity Model and Trade Efficiency: A Stochastic Frontier Analysis of Eastern European Countries' Potential Trade

Abstract: The opening up process of the eastern European countries is characterised by an increasing degree of trade integration with their Western neighbouring countries. Typically, the degree of East–West trade integration is assessed by comparing actual trade volumes with potential trade volumes projected from the gravity model parameters estimated for a group of countries that best represent normal trade relations. This approach, however, does not compare trade levels against a maximum level of trade feasible for the group of eastern European countries. This paper using a stochastic frontier specification of the gravity model is able to identify the efficiency of trade integration relative to maximum potential levels. The findings, based on a panel data set of bilateral exports from 17 Western European countries to the 10 new member states over the 1994–2007 period, indicate a high degree of East–West trade integration close to two-thirds of frontier estimates, suggesting a low degree of trade resistances.

Statically indeterminate contacts in axially loaded wire strand

Abstract: This paper is concerned with the analysis of simple wire strands made from one layer of circular wires helically wrapped around a circular straight core wire. The undeformed configuration is the special case in which each of the surrounding helical wires touches its two adjacent neighbouring helical wires as well as touching the core wire. This forms a statically indeterminate contact problem. A simple finite element model is developed to analyse this situation. Numerical results show that contacts can occur simultaneously at all possible contact points when the strand is subjected to extension with both ends fixed against rotation.
