TL;DR: When Chinese hamster cells were pulse-labeled with [3H]thymidine, three classes of labeled polymers were isolated by hydroxyapatite chromatography and the suggestion is made that the first two fractions are intermediates in the synthesis of the third, although the evidence remains cir-cumstantial and the alternate possibilities that these two fraction are by-products of replication or degradation products must be considered.

TL;DR: In this paper, a two-layer model of a mid-oceanic thermocline is developed, and a comparison of the depth and temperature of the thermoclines in this model is made with a root-mean-square description of the hydrographic structure of the North Atlantic.
Abstract: A two-layer model of a mid-oceanic thermocline is developed, and a comparison of the depth and temperature of the thermocline in this model is made with a root-mean-square description of the hydrographic structure of the North Atlantic. It is shown that the Sverdrup balance is maintained within the rms errors, and the entire estimated heat flux from the atmosphere is used to produce the observed density changes along the path of persistent flow.

TL;DR: In this article, the resonant interaction between surface and internal gravity waves propagating along a uniform channel in a two-fluid system has been investigated both experimentally and theoretically.
Abstract: The resonant interaction between surface and internal gravity waves propagating along a uniform channel in a two-fluid system has been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The wave coupling is induced by a shelf which runs along one side of the channel and large resonant internal waves are generated around certain frequencies. The shallow water approximation is used in the theoretical treatment of the problem and resonant frequencies and wave modes are calculated. Good experimental agreement is obtained near the resonant modes of low frequency, and the agreement deviated in the expected direction for higher frequency mode interactions. Measurements are also presented for the structure of the waves near the resonant frequencies. This is a laboratory model of a mechanism for the generation of long period internal waves in oceanic straits and channels.

TL;DR: The large foci of scales taken from the end of the tail, as compared to scales ab!ove the lateral l'ne, show tail scales to be replacement scales and indicate the tail was lost relatively late in life.
Abstract: Dawson (1964, 1966, 1971) lists a number of reports of fish lacking caudal fins. There are several reports of naturally occurring carp. CyprintWs carpio, and goldfish, Garassius auratus, without tail fins (Fiebiger, 1907; Breder, 1953; Ward, 1965). Apparently this is the first report of a hybrid of these two species with such an anomaly. The first (ArkSU #624) was seined from an irrigation ditch near Jonesboro, T.13N, R.2E, Sec. 12, Craighead Co. Ark., (Fig. 1). X-ray plates, not illustrated, show the fin to be lacking directly behind the 33rd vertebra with no apparent malformation. The large foci of scales taken from the end of the tail, as compared to scales ab!ove the lateral l'ne, show tail scales to be replacement scales (Creaser, 1926) and indicate the tail was lost relatively late in life.
