05 Mar 2003TL;DR: In this paper, a mobile communications base station has a service quality detection unit that monitors and measures communication qualities of wireless terminals currently located in the service area, and a packet classification unit that classifies packets addressed to the wireless terminals into two or more groups based on the measured communication qualities.
Abstract: A mobile communications base station has a service quality detection unit that monitors and measures communication qualities of wireless terminals currently located in the service area, and a packet classification unit that classifies packets addressed to the wireless terminals into two or more groups based on the measured communication qualities. The base station also has a buffering delay measuring unit that measures buffering delay of the packets for each of the groups. A transmission priority detection unit of the base station determines the order of priority for transmitting the packets based on the measured buffering delay in comparison with a prescribed threshold value. A resource allocation unit of the base station allocates the radio resources to the packets based on the order of priority to transmit the packets to the associated wireless terminals.

13 May 2007TL;DR: This paper builds on the ubiquitous infrastructure provided by the mobile phone network to design a wide-area system for locating objects and presents the design of the object search system together with a set of simple heuristics which can be used for efficient object search.
Abstract: Locating physical items is a highly relevant application addressed by numerous systems. Many of these systems share the drawback that costly infrastructure must be installed before a significant physical area can be covered, that is, before these systems may be used in practice. In this paper, we build on the ubiquitous infrastructure provided by the mobile phone network to design a wide-area system for locating objects. Sensor-equipped mobile phones, naturally omnipresent in populated environments, are the main elements of our system. They are used to distribute search queries and to report an object's location. We present the design of our object search system together with a set of simple heuristics which can be used for efficient object search. Moreover, such a system can only be successfully deployed if environment conditions (such as the participant density and their mobility) and system settings (such as number of queried sensors) allow to find an object quickly and efficiently. We therefore demonstrate the practicability of our system and obtain suitable system parameters for its execution in a series of simulations. Further, we use a real-world experiment to validate the obtained simulation results.

01 Jun 2003TL;DR: This work presents a dynamic joint source and channel coding adaptation algorithm for the AMR speech codec based on the ITU-T Emodel that requires a small number of computations that allows real time operation in parallel to voice streams.
Abstract: We present a dynamic joint source and channel coding adaptation algorithm for the AMR speech codec based on the ITU-T Emodel. This model takes both delay and packet loss into consideration. We address the problem of finding the optimal choice of source and channel bit rates given QoS information about the wired and wireless IP network and subject to constraints on maximum packet loss, maximum delay and maximum allowed transmission rate. Our results show that an adaptation is necessary to preserve acceptable levels of quality while making optimal use of the allowed bandwidth. Our technique requires a small number of computations that allows real time operation in parallel to voice streams.

21 Jul 2006TL;DR: In this article, a wireless control apparatus is described that forms and controls an area of a base station according to an antenna pattern. But the antenna pattern is not considered in this paper.
Abstract: A wireless control apparatus is disclosed that forms and controls an area of a base station according to an antenna pattern. The wireless control apparatus includes an area formation information gathering part that gathers area formation information pertaining to area formation of a neighboring base station; and an antenna pattern control part that controls and directs at least one of a main lobe, a side lobe, and a null point between the main lobe and the side lobe of the antenna pattern based on the area formation information to reduce frequency interference between a current cell formed by a current base station and a neighboring cell formed by the neighboring base station.

09 Dec 2008TL;DR: This paper discusses how the instrumentation is performed on various JavaScript and HTML syntactic constructs, presents a new policy construction method for facilitating the creation and compilation of security policies, and document various practical difficulties arose during the prototyping.
Abstract: JavaScript has been exploited to launch various browser-based attacks. Our previous work proposed a theoretical framework applying policy-based code instrumentation to JavaScript. This paper further reports our experience carrying out the theory in practice. Specifically, we discuss how the instrumentation is performed on various JavaScript and HTML syntactic constructs, present a new policy construction method for facilitating the creation and compilation of security policies, and document various practical difficulties arose during our prototyping. Our prototype currently works with several different web browsers, including Safari Mobile running on iPhones. We report our results based on experiments using representative real-world web applications
