TL;DR: In this paper, Zhao et al. investigated the distribution and transport of suspended sediments in the Bohai Sea and the Yellow River (Huanghe) during flood season and found that suspended sediment concentration (SSC) occurs as turbid plume on both sides of the river mouth.
Abstract: Hydrological and sedimentological investigations were carried out off the Yellow River (Huanghe) mouth and the nearby Bohai Sea during August–September 2007 to examine the distribution and transport of suspended sediments. Our data witnessed that suspended sediments from the Yellow River mouth primarily extend southerly and southeasterly during the flood season. High suspended sediment concentration (SSC) occurs as turbid plume on both sides of the river mouth, where it can reach >20 mg l −1 in the surface water and >40 mg l −1 in the bottom water. Accordingly, salinity varies from 25 to 29 psu, mean grain size (Dmz) is >200 μm, and volume concentration (VC) is >100 μl l −1 . High SSC was concentrated in the river mouth area as two muddy patches, i.e. the North Mud and South Mud, consisting mostly of fine-grained silt and clayey silt sediments. Our results have verified the larger extent of the South Mud than that of the North one, implicating south- and southeastward sediment dispersal paths that prevail near the river mouth area. The existing anti-clockwise and clockwise flows in the river mouth area were synthesized as the major hydrodynamics responsible for forming the two muddy patches. Tidal and residual currents are considered as the key hydrodynamic factors controlling the sediment distribution and transport in the region.

TL;DR: Overall, CS-MA-DETA microspheres with outstanding adsorption performance toward Pb( II) and/or Cd(II) solution(s) might serve as a new absorbent for wastewater purification.
Abstract: A novel adsorbent, CS-MA-DETA microspheres, for uptake of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions was first fabricated via two-step grafting methyl acrylate (MA) and diethylenetriamine (DETA) onto chitosan (CS) microsphere surface in the absence of cross-linkers. CS-MA-DETA microspheres of 3.04 μm in mean diameter were of uniformly wrinkle-like topography sketched out by SEM, whose surface after decoration by MA and DETA was stable and beneficial to metal ion capture. Its chemical composition, microstructure, and thermal property were characterized by elemental analysis, FTIR, XRD, BET, and TGA techniques, and the achieved quantitative results mainly included C/N ratio (4.76), crystallinity (31.20%, 19.75% of CS), specific surface area (27.806 m2 g–1), pore diameter (3.452 nm), and mass loss at the first stage (3%, around 10% of CS), which indicated a successful synthesis, well-defined structure, and good thermostability. Adsorption tests of CS-MA-DETA microspheres were performed in Pb(II) and/or Cd(II) s...

TL;DR: To enhance l- malate biosynthesis and secretion by microbial cells, it is very important to study the mechanisms of l-malic acid biosynthetic and secretion at enzymatic and molecular levels.
Abstract: l-Malic acid has many uses in food, beverage, pharmaceutical, chemical and medical industries. It can be produced by one-step fermentation, enzymatic transformation of fumaric acid to l-malate and acid hydrolysis of polymalic acid. However, the process for one-step fermentation is preferred as it has many advantages over any other process. The pathways of l-malic acid biosynthesis in microorganisms are partially clear and three metabolic pathways including non-oxidative pathway, oxidative pathway and glyoxylate cycle for the production of l-malic acid from glucose have been identified. Usually, high levels of l-malate are produced under the nitrogen starvation conditions, l-malate, as a calcium salt, is secreted from microbial cells and CaCO3 can play an important role in calcium malate biosynthesis and regulation. However, it is still unclear how it is secreted into the medium. To enhance l-malate biosynthesis and secretion by microbial cells, it is very important to study the mechanisms of l-malic acid biosynthesis and secretion at enzymatic and molecular levels.
