TL;DR: The result indicated that MT was significantly induced after 3 days, with a dose-response relation between MT contents and Cd concentrations in two tissues and has a time- response relation in hepatopancreas during the experimental period, which suggest the mechanisms of Cd toxicity and detoxification strategies in both tissues of C. japonica.
Abstract: Cadmium (Cd) is one of the most toxic heavy metals that are widespread in inshore sediments of China, and can induce the production of toxic hydroxyl radicals that cause cell damage. The present study investigated the effect of two Cd concentrations (the final Cd concentration of 0.025 and 0.05 mg/L, prepared with CdCl2 x 2.5H2O) on metallothioneins (MT), antioxidant enzyme activities (superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx)) and DNA integrity (DNA strand breaks) for up to 15 days in the gills and hepatopancreas of the portunid crab Charybdis japonica. The result indicated that MT was significantly induced after 3 days, with a dose-response relation between MT contents and Cd concentrations in two tissues and has a time-response relation in hepatopancreas during the experimental period; SOD, CAT and GPx activities could be stimulated after 0.5 day, all attained peak value and then reduced during the experimental period, but were not inhibited at day 15, except SOD and CAT in gills. Gill was more sensitive to Cd than hepatopancreas, and the hepatopancreas was the main detoxification tissue to deal with oxyradicals. DNA strand breaks were induced after 0.5 day, and there was a positive dose-response relation between DNA damage levels and Cd concentrations in gills, rather than hepatopancreas due to higher DNA repair activities. These results suggest the mechanisms of Cd toxicity and detoxification strategies in both tissues of C. japonica; in addition, the use of the biomarkers as indices for biomonitoring potential toxic effect of Cd in situ is discussed.

TL;DR: Investigation of the effects of AHG on hyperglycemia in the liver of insulin resistant mice induced by a high-fat diet for 12 weeks suggests that AHG could be a promising natural marine product for the development of an antihyperglycemic agent.
Abstract: Holothurian glycosaminoglycan isolated from Apostichopus japonicus (named AHG) can suppress hepatic glucose production in insulin resistant hepatocytes, but its effects on glucose metabolism in vivo are unknown. The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of AHG on hyperglycemia in the liver of insulin resistant mice induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) for 12 weeks. The results demonstrated that AHG supplementation apparently reduced body weight, blood glucose level, and serum insulin content in a dose-dependent manner in HFD-fed mice. The protein levels and gene expression of gluconeogenesis rate-limiting enzymes G6Pase and PEPCK were remarkedly suppressed in the insulin resistant liver. In addition, although the total expression of IRS1, Akt, and AMPK in the insulin resistant liver was not affected by AHG supplementation, the phosphorylation of IRS1, Akt, and AMPK were clearly elevated by AHG treatment. These results suggest that AHG could be a promising natural marine product for the development of an antihyperglycemic agent.

TL;DR: In this paper, a review of magnetic materials based on iron oxide nanoparticles and their applications as oil sorbents is presented, where the main techniques used to obtain IRO nanoparticles are discussed.
Abstract: Oil pollution has posed a great threat to marine ecosystems and human health. In recent years, many studies have focused on the functionalization of magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles to obtain efficient adsorbents for oil removal from water. This review focuses on recent studies on magnetic materials based on iron oxide nanoparticles and their applications as oil sorbents. The main techniques used to obtain iron oxide nanoparticles are also discussed. The aim of this literature review is to obtain a better understanding of the materials that could be used to obtain efficient oil adsorbents with magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and suitable synthesis strategies by encapsulating iron oxides with organic or inorganic coatings or embedding them in a matrix/support. Another purpose is to identify the desirable characteristics of magnetic materials required for high oil removal efficiency.

TL;DR: In this article, a concise and objective definition of monsoon rainy season characteristics is proposed for worldwide monsoon regions and the mean dates of local onset, peak and withdrawal phases of the summer monsoon rain season are highlighted.
Abstract: A concise and objective definition of monsoon rainy season characteristics is proposed for worldwide monsoon regions. The result highlights six major summer monsoon rainy season domains and the mean dates of the local onset, peak and withdrawal phases of the summer monsoon rainy season. The onset phases occur progressively later poleward in the continental domains but primarily eastward in the oceanic monsoon regions. The rainy season retreats equatorward over the continental and oceanic monsoon regions. The length of the rainy season decreases poleward and shorter rainy season can also be found over the outskirts of warm water. Some exceptions exist in terms of the characteristics of rainy season, e.g. the westward advance of rainy season over North Africa and an apparently prolonged rainy season in the Korean peninsula. The results here are basically compatible with those obtained in previous studies on regional monsoons.
A definition of the seasonal wind overturning is proposed. Combining rainfall and winds, we stratify the global monsoon into strong and weak categories. The strong monsoons are typically in the regions with both concentration of summer rainfall and annual reversal of low-level winds, while the weak monsoon features only a contrasting wet–dry season. Seemingly, some mid-latitude regions with wind reversals are not monsoonal because of the reversals being opposite to the monsoon overturning and the rainfall patterns being more or less Mediterranean.
The comparison between the monsoon domains derived from Climate Prediction Center (CPC) Merged Analysis of Precipitation (CMAP) and the 40-year European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Re-Analysis (ERA-40), the Japanese 25-year Reanalysis (JRA-25) and National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) datasets show good capabilities of the reanalyses in demarcation of the major monsoon rainy season domains in the tropics and subtropics. But the reanalyses are less realistic in the mid-latitudes of Eurasia and North America. The result here provides the simple yet objective definitions of monsoon domain, onset, peak and withdrawal which are useful for validation of GCMs. Copyright © 2008 Royal Meteorological Society
