TL;DR: In order to study the relationship between chemical structure and properties of modified carrageenans versus antioxidant activity in vitro, kappa-carrageenan oligosaccharides were prepared through mild hydrochloric acid hydrolysis of the polysaccharide, and these were used as starting materials for the partial synthesis of their oversulfated, acetylated, and phosphorylated derivatives.

TL;DR: In this paper, three model ceria catalysts were synthesized and analyzed with isothermal soot oxidation, H2-TPR, and Raman spectroscopy, and the results suggest that the initial activity of the catalyst is determined by the number of catalyst-soot contact points rather than the catalyst surface area.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared the results of the two standard methods in oceanic waters where attenuation is relatively low but resulted in significant errors in coastal waters, and the newly developed semianalytical method appeared to have no such limitation as it performed well for both oceanic and coastal waters.
Abstract: coastal waters, with Kd(490) ranging from 0.04 to 4.0 m 1 . The derived values are compared with the data calculated from in situ measurements of the vertical profiles of downwelling irradiance. The comparisons show that the two standard methods produced satisfactory estimates of Kd(l) in oceanic waters where attenuation is relatively low but resulted in significant errors in coastal waters. The newly developed semianalytical method appears to have no such limitation as it performed well for both oceanic and coastal waters. For all data in this study the average of absolute percentage difference between the in situ measured and the semianalytically derived Kd is 14% for l = 490 nm and 11% for l = 443 nm.

TL;DR: The results estimated at S = 38.4 per thousand agree with the measurements by Morel with an average difference of 1%, well within his experimental error of 2%.
Abstract: A theoretical model was developed estimating the scattering by seawater that are due to concentration fluctuation. Combining with the model proposed for density fluctuation (Optics Express, 17, 1671, 2009), we evaluated the overall effect of sea salts on the scattering. The variation of seawater scattering with the salinity is a combination of two factors: decreasing contribution due to density fluctuation and increasing contribution due to concentration fluctuation, with the latter effect dominating. The trend is, however, slightly non-linear and the linear adjustment of scattering with salinity that is frequently used would lead to an underestimate by an average of 2%. The results estimated at S = 38.4‰ agree with the measurements by Morel (Cahiers Oceanographiques, 20, 157, 1968) with an average difference of 1%, well within his experimental error of 2%. The spectral signature also varies with salinity, with the power-law slope increasing from -4.286 to -4.306 for salinity from 0 to 40‰.
