TL;DR: In this article, the authors suggest the use of the inverse Gaussian distribution for a model of such lifetime behavior and discuss different reliability features of the distribution, and show that its failure rate is nonmonotonic, initially increasing and then decreasing.
Abstract: Early occurrence of certain events such as failure or repairs is a common phenomenon in the lifetime of industrial products. Often, the log normal distribution has been found as a useful model to be applicable whenever the early occurrences dominate a lifetime distribution. In this paper we suggest the use of the inverse Gaussian distribution for a model of such lifetime behavior and discuss different reliability features of the distribution. It is shown that its failure rate is nonmonotonic, initially increasing and then decreasing. Advantages in the use of the inverse Gaussian over the log normal are given. Certain numerical results are presented for illustration.

TL;DR: This article found that four sources of variability in the perception of uncertainty were suggested and measured with a sample of 5i corporate division managers, and that cognitive process variables were more consistently related to a manager's perceived uncertainty than were perceived environmental variables.
Abstract: Most contingency theorists have focused on perceived environmental characteristics while ignoring the possible impact of individual differences among subjects. The view that an organization is for the most part what people perceive it to be suggests the need to identify the potential role of individual differences in the perceptions of organizational properties. Four sources of variability in the perception of uncertainty were suggested and measured with a sample of 5i corporate division managers. Cognitive process variables were more consistently related to a manager's perceived uncertainty than were perceived environmental variables.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors compared different types of prisons located in five countries (the United States, Mexico, England, West Germany, and Spain) as a test of the relative importance of functional and importation variables in prisonization.
Abstract: Interorganizational and cross-cultural comparisons are made among different types of prisons located in five countries-the United States, Mexico, England, West Germany, and Spain-as a test of the relative importance of functional and importation variables in prisonization. A normative orientation among inmates which is in opposition to staff expectations is found in all prisons in all countries. Adherence to this orientation by individual inmates is most prevalent among American inmates and last among Mexican inmates. The functional theory of the inmate system receives more support than the importation theory with regard to the general orientation to the institution and its programs and to attitudes toward and interaction with staff; but the two models do about equally well in accounting for the extent to which prisoners adopt the inmate code. Theoretical and policy implications of the study are discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, an experimental study of the noise production by high speed jets over a wide range of Reynolds numbers has been performed, and it was shown that at low Reynolds numbers coherent flow instabilities produce a dominant portion of the noises.
Abstract: An experimental study of the noise production by high speed jets over a wide range of Reynolds numbers has been performed. Two jets of nominal Mach numbers 1.5 and 2.3 were run over a Reynolds number range from 5300 to 107,000. Microphone measurements of the radiated noise and hot-wire measurements of the flow fluctuations demonstrate that at low Reynolds numbers coherent flow instabilities produce a dominant portion of the noise. In the nominal Mach number 2.3 jet these instability waves convect downstream supersonically with respect to the ambient air. In the nominal Mach number 1.5 jet the instabilities convect downstream subsonically. In both cases however, sound pressure level amplitude contours show that the low Reynolds number jets radiate noise comparable to intermediate and high Reynolds number jets. These measurements constitute substantial evidence that a flow instability model of the dominant noise generators may be appropriate for conventional high Reynolds number supersonic jets. a0 C D d M m n r Re St u U Nomenclature speed of sound outside jet wavespeed in the downstream direction diameter of the jet effective diameter of the jet Mach number of the jet at the exit normalized mass velocity fluctuations = azimuthal mode number = radial distance from jet centerline = Reynolds number = p Ud/n. = Strouhal number =fd/ (/(/is frequency) = local velocity =mean centerline velocity of the jet at the nozzle exit

TL;DR: The evidence for the many key functions of the salivary glands in both feeding and non-feeding acarines is reviewed in this paper, where it is shown that most slowly feeding ixodid ticks secrete cement to insure firm attachment of the mouthparts to the host.
Abstract: The evidence for the many key functions of the salivary glands in both feeding and nonfeeding acarines is reviewed. The salivary glands of most slowly feeding ixodid ticks secrete cement to insure firm attachment of the mouthparts to the host. Much tissue destruction associated with tick feeding is probably caused by host reaction to materials in tick saliva, which produces trauma in the host vascular system near the feeding lesion. Ixodid salivary glands participate in excreting excess fluid while the tick is attached and feeding. There is growing evidence that ixodid salivary fluid secretion is under nervous control and that cyclic AMP and calcium may play important roles in the fluid secretory process. Better understanding of the physiology of acarine salivary glands should contribute significantly to a better understanding of the role of the glands in the development and release of pathogens.

TL;DR: Necropsy and histological findings confirmed a diagnosis of polycystic kidney disease in a 3-year-old female Persian cat and showed radiolucent areas in both kidneys.
Abstract: Bilateral polycystic kidney disease was diagnosed in a 3-year-old female Persian cat. An elevation of blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine levels, and serum phosphorus were the only abnormalities found with serial serum chemical and urine analyses. Intravenous urography showed radiolucent areas in both kidneys. An attempted renal biopsy produced only fluid but no kidney tissue. Necropsy and histological findings confirmed a diagnosis of polycystic kidney disease.

Abstract: In the present study, daughters who had lost fathers and whose mothers had not remarried demonstrated greater insecurity and more negative self-evaluations than daughters who had either not lost their fathers or had lost their fathers but their mothers had remarried. Contrary to the findings of Hetherington (1972), neither reason for father loss (i.e., death or divorce) nor age of daughter at time of father loss was found to affect the psychological adjustment of the college-age daughters who served as subjects in this study.

TL;DR: Glutamine, glutamate, aspartate, and alanine at 0.5 mM blocked the induction of heterocysts by MSO in A. variabilis and with Anabaena 7120, glutamine and glutamate were fully effective andAlanine partially effective in preventing MSO-induced heterocyst formation.
Abstract: Heterocyst development in ammonia-grown cultures of Anabaena variabilis and Anabaena 7120 was fully induced by the amino-acid analog methionine sulfoximine (MSO) at concentrations of 0.5–1.0 μM. Glutamine, glutamate, aspartate, and alanine at 0.5 mM blocked the induction of heterocysts by MSO in A. variabilis. With Anabaena 7120, glutamine and glutamate were fully effective and alanine partially effective in preventing MSO-induced heterocyst formation. In MSO-treated algae, glutamine synthetase activity was reduced to less than 15% of control values within 4–6 h. Inactivation of the enzyme was prevented by all four amino acids tested.

TL;DR: Ductal carcinomas accounted for nearly all metastases seen in epithelial canine mammary tumors submitted to the Tulsa Registry of Canine and Feline Neoplasms in a 4-year period from a defined canine population.
Abstract: Ductal carcinomas accounted for nearly all metastases seen in epithelial canine mammary tumors submitted to the Tulsa Registry of Canine and Feline Neoplasms in a 4-year period from a defined canine population. Lobular and squamous cell carcinomas were the only other metastatic carcinomas seen. Early ductal carcinoma was used to indicate nonmetastatic ductal carcinoma with a favorable post-surgical prognosis. Benign epithelial tumors were categorized as adenoma, ductal papilloma and squamous cell papilloma. Progressive transformation of well defined adenomas and papillomas to carcinoma was not evident in histologic preparations. Squamous metaplasia was seen in many ductal papillomas and ductal carcinomas. Inclusion of pseudocartilage and pseudoosteoid and osteoid, cartilage and bone with ductal carcinomas, adenomas and ductal papillomas seemed related to secretions escaping from neoplastic epithelial cells into stroma or between proliferating tumor cells. There was proliferation and perhaps even neoplastic transforma- tion of myoepithelial cells in some of these tumors. Changes in myoepithelium, however, appeared to be secondary to neoplastic transformation of epithelium. Bone and cartilage in these tumors were consid- ered heterotopic with no neoplastic potential. A classification of canine epithelial mammary tumors was developed in a 4-year period by the Tulsa Registry of Canine and Feline Neoplasms. The Tulsa Registry was established in April, 1972, to survey all canine and feline neoplasms submitted from a defined population through a cooperative agreement with veterinarians in the greater Tulsa, Okla., area. The classification was designed to allow better communication with Tulsa veterinary surgeons and to eliminate the confusion that we and others had experienced in establishing the exact status of these tumors. The proposed classification is adenoma, ductal papilloma, squamous cell papilloma, ductal carcinoma, lobular carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Cases reviewed included all tumors diagnosed histologically in a veterinary hospital population of about 65,000 dogs in each registry year. The human population of this well defined and geographically isolated area is slightly more than 500,000. A registry in California (22) is the only other group attempting to collect all canine tumors from a defined human and canine population. Both registries believe it is important to establish an accurate evaluation of the occurrence of the various types of canine tumors and to establish incidence rates for those tumors. Because of

TL;DR: The buoyant densities of mouse immunoglobulins were determined by isopycnic centrifugation in phosphate-buffered cesium chloride using beta-galactosidase as marker to determine the density of IgG, TEPC 15 IgA, secreted IgM, and MOPC 104E IgM.
Abstract: The buoyant densities of mouse immunoglobulins were determined by isopycnic centrifugation in phosphate-buffered cesium chloride using beta-galactosidase as marker. The buoyant densities of IgG, TEPC 15 IgA, secreted IgM, and MOPC 104E IgM were consistent with their carbohydrate contents both in the presence and the absence of the nonionic detergent, Nonidet P-40. Intracellular IgM from spleen cell lysates had a buoyant density corresponding to a carbohydrate content of 6%. Membrane IgM from detergent lysates of spleen cells was less dense than either intracellular or secreted IgM in the presence of detergent. The IgD-like membrane molecules were more dense than membrane IgM.

Abstract: The light drag in a rotating fused-silica disk inserted in a He-Ne ring laser was measured at $\ensuremath{\lambda}=633$ nm and found to be ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{e}=0.5424$ with an rms error ($1\ensuremath{\sigma}$) of \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2 \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{} ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}4}$, including the known error sources. This constitutes a tenfold improvement in accuracy over a previous result. While the given error margin does not include the value given by the Lorentz drag in a linear arrangement, ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{\mathrm{LO}}=0.54182$, the measured difference of $2\ensuremath{\sigma}$ is deemed too small to claim a discrepancy.

TL;DR: Blood films and sera samples from wild Oklahoma raptors were examined for hematozoa and tested for serologic antibody response to Newcastle Disease Virus, encephalitis, ornithosis, and influenza, revealing two adult male red-tailed hawk positive for antibody to type-A influenza.
Abstract: Blood films and sera samples from wild Oklahoma raptors (Strigiformes —36 birds, 3 species; Falconiformes—50 birds, 7 species) were examined for hematozoa and tested for serologic antibody response to Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV), encephalitis (EEE and WEE), ornithosis, and influenza. Twenty-nine of 36 (80.5%) Strigiformes and 24 of 50 (48.0%) Falconiformes showed the presence of one or more hematozoa. Serologic testing revealed the serum of one adult male red-tailed hawk positive for antibody to NDV and one additional adult male red-tailed hawk positive for antibody to type-A influenza.

TL;DR: In this paper, a theoretical model for calculating the electronic structure of the F center in the alkaline-earth oxides is described; it is a modification of a similar model previously used for the alkali halides.
Abstract: A theoretical model for calculating the electronic structure of the F center in the alkaline-earth oxides is described; it is a modification of a similar model previously used for the alkali halides. The model emphasizes the importance of (a) electronic structure on the ions neighboring the defect, (b) electronic and ionic polarization of the lattice, and (c) lattice distortion and its effects on the energy levels and wave functions of the defect. Absorption and emission states of the F center in CaO have been calculated using this model. The electron-lattice interaction for A/sub 1//sub g/, E/sub g/, and T/sub 2//sub g/ displacements of the nearest-neighbor ions has been calculated and used to interpret the absorption and luminescence bands of the F center. The calculated energy-level scheme as a function of lattice relaxation gives substantial agreement with published experimental data. It indicates that the /sup 1/T/sub 1//sub u/ ..-->.. /sup 1/A/sub 1//sub g/ and /sup 3/T/sub 1//sub u/ ..-->.. /sup 1/A/sub 1//sub g/ transitions should occur at roughly 2.0 eV and give rise to two emission bands with different temperature dependence. The /sup 3/T/sub 1//sub u/ relaxed excited state is predominantly coupled to the E/sub g/ vibrational modes. Unlike the othermore » states its wave function is a rapidly varying function of A/sub 1//sub g/ lattice distortion. The calculations suggest that an absorption band associated with the /sup 3/T/sub 1//sub u/ ..-->.. /sup 3/A/sub 1//sub g/ transition may be observable at roughly 0.7 eV using techniques for excited-state spectroscopy.« less

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of plastic deformation on the optical absorption, emission, and thermoluminescence of MgO was investigated, and the results indicated that both absorption and emission bands are comprised of several different bands.
Abstract: The effect of plastic deformation on the optical absorption, emission, and thermoluminescence of MgO is investigated. Plastic deformation produces an optical absorption band at about 215 nm whose intensity is proportional to the percent of deformation. However, the intensity of the absorption depends strongly on the sample shape. The intensity of the blue thermoluminescence is greater for deformed samples. The results indicate that both absorption and emission bands are comprised of several different bands.

Abstract: This methodological investigation of sex stereotypes employed three different instruments to collect sex stereotypes from 264 undergraduate students. The Adjective Check List and the Stereotype Questionnaire elicited different stereotypes, while an open-ended form elicited no stereotypic items. It was found that Ss reported visual imagery of specific persons while responding. In a second phase of the research, the stereotypic items obtained in the collection phase were marked on the appropriate instrument form for a male and female description. These forms with a set of multiple choice questions concerning such things as sex of the description, desirability, adjustment, and of the S's experience of visual imagery were given to 180 different Ss. The stereotypic items were found to convey reliable information as to judgment of the sex of the stimulus stereotypic items, however, the different instruments conveyed differential information as to sex of stimulus items, desirability, and adjustment of the instrument description. Visual imagery of Ss was found to be significantly related to correct judgment of sex of stimulus items and to high confidence in that judgment.
