TL;DR: Testing on several image databases demonstrates that, despite its simplicity, FISH is competitive with the currently best-performing techniques both for sharpness estimation and for no-reference image quality assessment.
Abstract: In this letter, we present a simple, yet effective wavelet-based algorithm for estimating both global and local image sharpness (FISH, Fast Image Sharpness). FISH operates by first decomposing the input image via a three-level separable discrete wavelet transform (DWT). Next, the log-energies of the DWT subbands are computed. Finally, a scalar index corresponding to the image's overall sharpness is computed via a weighted average of these log-energies. Testing on several image databases demonstrates that, despite its simplicity, FISH is competitive with the currently best-performing techniques both for sharpness estimation and for no-reference image quality assessment.

TL;DR: Three unconventional approaches to keying variable management are presented and the characteristics of an urban UHF radio channel, determined by mutual sounding, as the cryptovariable are proposed.
Abstract: We present three unconventional approaches to keying variable management. The first approach is based on using a public key cryptosystem (PKC) that is breakable in short, but on average less, time than it takes to set up an ultrawide bandwidth modem that is then used to transport a keying variable for a classical cryptosystem. The second concept proposes using the characteristics of an urban UHF radio channel, determined by mutual sounding, as the cryptovariable. The third concept encourages research into ill-conditioned problems as potentially fruitful ground for PKCs not based on finite field arithmetic. >

TL;DR: This article identified and classified the construct domains assessed by situational judgment tests in the literature into a content-based typology and conducted a meta-analysis to determine the criterion-related validity of each construct domain and to test for moderators.
Abstract: Situational judgment tests (SJTs) are a measurement method that may be designed to assess a variety of constructs. Nevertheless, many studies fail to report the constructs measured by the situational judgment tests in the extant literature. Consequently, a construct-level focus in the situational judgment test literature is lacking, and researchers and practitioners know little about the specific constructs typically measured. Our objective was to extend the efforts of previous researchers (e.g., McDaniel, Hartman, Whetzel, & Grubb, 2007; McDaniel & Ngyuen, 2001; Schmitt & Chan, 2006) by highlighting the need for a construct focus in situational judgment test research. We identified and classified the construct domains assessed by situational judgment tests in the literature into a content-based typology. We then conducted a meta-analysis to determine the criterion-related validity of each construct domain and to test for moderators. We found that situational judgment tests most often assess leadership and interpersonal skills and those situational judgment tests measuring teamwork skills and leadership have relatively high validities for overall job performance. Although based on a small number of studies, we found evidence that (a) matching the predictor constructs with criterion facets improved criterion-related validity; and (b) video-based situational judgment tests tended to have stronger criterion-related validity than pencil-and-paper situational judgment tests, holding constructs constant. Implications for practice and research are discussed.
