Abstract: Image quality assessment (IQA) has been a topic of intense research over the last several decades. With each year comes an increasing number of new IQA algorithms, extensions of existing IQA algorithms, and applications of IQA to other disciplines. In this article, I first provide an up-to-date review of research in IQA, and then I highlight several open challenges in this field. The first half of this article provides discuss key properties of visual perception, image quality databases, existing full-reference, no-reference, and reduced-reference IQA algorithms. Yet, despite the remarkable progress that has been made in IQA, many fundamental challenges remain largely unsolved. The second half of this article highlights some of these challenges. I specifically discuss challenges related to lack of complete perceptual models for: natural images, compound and suprathreshold distortions, and multiple distortions, and the interactive effects of these distortions on the images. I also discuss challenges related to IQA of images containing nontraditional, and I discuss challenges related to the computational efficiency. The goal of this article is not only to help practitioners and researchers keep abreast of the recent advances in IQA, but to also raise awareness of the key limitations of current IQA knowledge.

Abstract: Fifty-one cyclic beef cows were mated with fertile bulls. At 36 h after the start of oestrus, cows were assigned to receive sesame oil (controls) or progesterone (100 mg) on Days 1, 2, 3 and 4 of pregnancy. Peripheral plasma concentration of progesterone was measured until slaughter on Days 5 or 14. Cows were randomly assigned to be slaughtered on Days 5 or 14 or remain intact and palpated per rectum on Day 40 to verify pregnancy. Uteri on Days 5 and 14 were flushed for recovery of luminal protein and conceptus tissue. Conceptus and endometrial tissues were cultured with [3H]leucine and submitted to two-dimensional-PAGE and fluorography. Administration of progesterone increased peripheral plasma progesterone concentration on Day 2-5. Conceptuses recovered from progesterone-treated cows on Day 14 were advanced in development compared to conceptuses from control cows. Conceptuses recovered from progesterone-treated cows were viable as polypeptides associated with maintenance of pregnancy in cattle were synthesized and released at an earlier time and pregnancy was maintained beyond Day 40. Early progesterone stimulation altered the synthesis and release of polypeptides from endometrial explant cultures on Day 5. Results indicate a role of progesterone in the maternal regulation of conceptus growth and development in early pregnancy of cattle.

Abstract: Conjugates of bovine serum albumin and CdTe nanoparticles capped with l-cysteine have been synthesized via a one-pot glutaric dialdehyde cross-linking procedure. Diads (1:1) with some amount of 2:1 albumin−nanoparticle assemblies preferably form in this reaction, as evidenced by gel electrophoresis. Circular dichroism spectroscopy demonstrates that the tertiary structure of the protein remains largely intact after the conjugation. Attachment of protein moieties result in a significant increase of CdTe emission, which is attributed to the resonance energy transfer from the tryptophan moieties of albumin to CdTe nanoparticles acting as receptors for the protein antennae.

Abstract: Although base of the pyramid markets are significant sources of entrepreneurial opportunities, the nature of entrepreneurship in these markets is not well understood. Additionally, these markets remain largely underserved by multinational enterprises (MNEs). Given theoretical and practical gaps associated with these issues, we integrate entrepreneurship, institutional, and network theories to discuss how the entrepreneurship process of MNEs is negatively affected in base of the pyramid markets. We then explain how partnerships with nongovernment organizations (NGOs) can offset such negative effects due to NGOs' high degree of localized knowledge, social embeddedness within multiple informal networks, and ambidexterity in dealing with diverse stakeholder groups. Both economic and social benefits can result from such partnerships.
