Abstract: Many of the interesting physics processes to be measured at the LHC have a signature involving one or more isolated electrons. The electron reconstruction and identification efficiencies of the ATLAS detector at the LHC have been evaluated using proton-proton collision data collected in 2011 at TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb. Tag-and-probe methods using events with leptonic decays of and bosons and mesons are employed to benchmark these performance parameters. The combination of all measurements results in identification efficiencies determined with an accuracy at the few per mil level for electron transverse energy greater than 30 GeV.

Abstract: Universal-diverse orientation was defined as an attitude of awareness and acceptance of both the similarities and differences that exist among people. A 45-item scale developed to measure the construct was administered to 4 separate samples (ns = 93, 111, 153, and 135). Internal consistency and retest reliability for the Miville-Guzman Universality-Diversity Scale (M-GUDS) ranged from .89 to .95. The M-GUDS significantly correlated in theoretically predicted ways with measures of racial identity, empathy, healthy narcissism, feminism, androgyny, homophobia, and dogmatism (the last 2 correlations were negative). The M-GUDS displayed discriminant validity by failing to correlate with Scholastic Achievement Test Verbal scores, although mixed results were obtained with social desirability. In summary, the data suggest considerable reliability and initial construct validity for the M-GUDS.

Abstract: A detailed experimental study has been made of the adsorption of pure methane, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and their binary mixtures on dry activated carbon (Filtrasorb 400, 12 × 40 mesh, Calgon Carbon) at 318.2 K and pressures up to 13.6 MPa. The mixture measurements were made at nominal feed-gas compositions of 20, 40, 60, and 80 mol %. The mixture data clearly elucidate the competitive nature of the individual-component adsorption from the mixtures. Measurements were made using a volumetric technique, coupled with gas chromatographic analysis of the equilibrium gas-phase compositions. Error propagation analysis reveals the expected average experimental uncertainties in the amount adsorbed of 2% for pure methane and nitrogen and 6% for CO2. For the mixture measurements, the uncertainties are estimated to be about 3% for the total adsorption, while the individual-component uncertainties vary from 0.02 to 0.2 mmol/g activated carbon, depending on the mixture composition. Abstract: In 51 acquisitions of financially distressed firms, related business combinations in which the acquirers had prior acquisition experience performed best. However, business relatedness and acquisition experience had no effect on performance in a control group of 46 acquisitions of firms that were not distressed. The results imply that tacit knowledge about the acquisition process and about how to integrate and manage the assets of distressed firms may be keys to their successful acquisition.
