TL;DR: In this article, the long-lived charge-transfer state of the C 60 -porphyrin dyad was successfully converted to photocurrent using a self-assembled monolayer technique.
Abstract: Redox-active fullerenes can be covalently bound to a variety of donors; their photophysical properties have been investigated. Their photochemical processes, including electron transfer and energy transfer, are varied, depending on the donor, linkage between the donor and C 60 , and solvent. Regardless of the solvent and linkage, the charge-separated state is produced efficiently in zinc porphyrin-C 60 systems, showing that C 60 is a good electron acceptor. The most intriguing characteristic of C 60 in electron transfer is that C 60 accelerates photoinduced charge separation and retards charge recombination in the dark. The long-lived charge-transfer state of the C 60 -porphyrin dyad was successfully converted to photocurrent using a self-assembled monolayer technique. These findings will provide a new strategy for the design and synthesis of artificial photosynthethic systems and photoactive materials using C 60 as a building block.

TL;DR: The mouse Dmc1 protein was detected in leptotene-to-zygotene spermatocytes, when homolog pairing likely initiates, and random spread of univalent axial elements without correct pairing between homologs was revealed.

TL;DR: It is shown that, in dorsal-zone-depleted mice, the dorsal domain of the olfactory bulb was devoid of glomerular structures, although second-order neurons were present in the vacant areas, which indicates that aversive information is received in the ofactory bulb by separate sets ofglomeruli, those dedicated for innate and those for learned responses.
Abstract: The mammalian olfactory system mediates various responses, including aversive behaviours to spoiled foods and fear responses to predator odours. In the olfactory bulb, each glomerulus represents a single species of odorant receptor. Because a single odorant can interact with several different receptor species, the odour information received in the olfactory epithelium is converted to a topographical map of multiple glomeruli activated in distinct areas in the olfactory bulb. To study how the odour map is interpreted in the brain, we generated mutant mice in which olfactory sensory neurons in a specific area of the olfactory epithelium are ablated by targeted expression of the diphtheria toxin gene. Here we show that, in dorsal-zone-depleted mice, the dorsal domain of the olfactory bulb was devoid of glomerular structures, although second-order neurons were present in the vacant areas. The mutant mice lacked innate responses to aversive odorants, even though they were capable of detecting them and could be conditioned for aversion with the remaining glomeruli. These results indicate that, in mice, aversive information is received in the olfactory bulb by separate sets of glomeruli, those dedicated for innate and those for learned responses.

TL;DR: Results indicate that the altered expression of MIAT by the SNP may play some role in the pathogenesis of MI.
Abstract: Through a large-scale case-control association study using 52,608 haplotype-based single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers, we identified a susceptible locus for myocardial infarction (MI) on chromosome 22q12.1. Following linkage disequilibrium (LD) mapping, haplotype analyses revealed that six SNPs in this locus, all of which were in complete LD, showed markedly significant association with MI (chi2=25.27, P=0.0000005; comparison of allele frequency, 3,435 affected individuals versus 3,774 controls, in the case of intron 1 5,338 C>T; rs2331291). Within this locus, we isolated a complete cDNA of a novel gene, designated myocardial infarction associated transcript (MIAT). MIAT has five exons, and in vitro translation assay showed that MIAT did not encode any translational product, indicating that this is likely to be a functional RNA. In vitro functional analyses revealed that the minor variant of one SNP in exon 5 increased transcriptional level of the novel gene. Moreover, unidentified nuclear protein(s) bound more intensely to risk allele than non-risk allele. These results indicate that the altered expression of MIAT by the SNP may play some role in the pathogenesis of MI.
