TL;DR: Laboratory analysis of samples returned from an asteroid establishes a direct link between asteroids and meteorites and provides clues to the complex history of the asteroid and its surface.
Abstract: The Hayabusa spacecraft successfully recovered dust particles from the surface of near-Earth asteroid 25143 Itokawa. Synchrotron-radiation x-ray diffraction and transmission and scanning electron microscope analyses indicate that the mineralogy and mineral chemistry of the Itokawa dust particles are identical to those of thermally metamorphosed LL chondrites, consistent with spectroscopic observations made from Earth and by the Hayabusa spacecraft. Our results directly demonstrate that ordinary chondrites, the most abundant meteorites found on Earth, come from S-type asteroids. Mineral chemistry indicates that the majority of regolith surface particles suffered long-term thermal annealing and subsequent impact shock, suggesting that Itokawa is an asteroid made of reassembled pieces of the interior portions of a once larger asteroid.

TL;DR: A theoretical analysis of the energy balance in the laser - metal interaction zone is carried out in this article, where heat transfer due to the recoil-pressure-induced melt flow is taken into consideration.
Abstract: A theoretical analysis of the energy balance in the laser - metal interaction zone is carried out. The heat transfer due to the recoil-pressure-induced melt flow is taken into consideration. It is shown that, for the absorbed laser intensities typical in welding and cutting, the recoil pressure induces high-velocity melt-flow ejection from the interaction zone. This melt flow carries away from the interaction zone a significant portion of the absorbed laser intensity (about 70 - 90% at low laser intensities); thus, convection-related terms can be ignored neither in calculations of the energy balance in the interaction zone nor in calculations of the thermal field in the vicinity of the weld pool or cutting front.

TL;DR: The observation of two narrow structures in the mass spectra of the π(±)Υ(nS) and π (±)h(b)(mP) pairs that are produced in association with a single charged pion in Υ(5S) decays is reported.
Abstract: We report the observation of two narrow structures in the mass spectra of the pi(+/-) Y(nS) (n = 1, 2, 3) and pi(+/-) h(b)(mP) (m = 1, 2) pairs that are produced in association with a single charged pion in Y(5S) decays The measured masses and widths of the two structures averaged over the five final states are M-1 = (10 6072 +/- 20) MeV/c(2), Gamma(1) =(184 +/- 24) MeV, and M-2 = (10 6522 +/- 15) MeV/c(2), Gamma(2) = (115 +/- 22) MeV The results are obtained with a 1214 fb(-1) data sample collected with the Belle detector in the vicinity of the Y(5S) resonance at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider

TL;DR: A mouse embryonic stem (ES) cell lines expressing EGFP is established, which can be propagated in culture, reintroduced into mice, or induced to differentiate in vitro, while still maintaining ubiquitous EGFP expression.

TL;DR: Results suggest that FasL has an essential role in the development of hepatitis and administration of the soluble form of Fas into HBsAg transgenic mice prevented the CTL-induced liver disease.
Abstract: The Fas ligand (FasL) is expressed in activated T cells and induces apoptosis in Fas-bearing cells. A cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) clone specific for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) causes an acute liver disease in HBsAg transgenic mice. Here we observed that the CTL clone killed hepatocytes expressing HBsAg in a Fas-dependent manner. Administration of the soluble form of Fas into HBsAg transgenic mice prevented the CTL-induced liver disease. In the second model, mice were primed with Propionibacterium acnes. A subsequent challenge with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) killed the mice by inducing liver injury. Neutralization of FasL rescued the mice from LPS-induced mortality, and Fas-null mice were resistant to LPS-induced mortality. These results suggest that FasL has an essential role in the development of hepatitis.
