Abstract: Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on structure and expression of interleukin-6 (IL-6), which is a cytokine with pleiotropic activities that plays a central role in host defense. IL-6 can exert growth-inducing, growth-inhibitory, and differentiation-inducing activities, depending on the target cells. These activities include (1) terminal differentiation (secretion of immunoglobulins) in B cells and (2) growth promotion on various B cells. IL-6 has been implicated in the pathology of many diseases including multiple myeloma, mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Selective inhibition of the synthesis or of the action of IL-6 may have therapeutic benefit against the IL-6-associated diseases. On the other hand, IL-6 has potent antitumor activity against certain types of tumors. Application of IL-6 is promising in cancer treatment as well as in treatment of radiation- or chemotherapy-induced myelosuppression. Abstract: A stable tracking control rule is proposed for nonholonomic vehicles. The stability of the rule is proved through the use of a Liapunov function. Inputs to the vehicle are a reference posture (x/sub r/, y/sub r/, theta /sub r/)/sup t/ and reference velocities ( nu /sub r/, omega /sub r/)/sup t/. The major objective of this study is to propose a control rule to find reasonable target linear and rotational velocities ( nu , omega )/sup t/. Linearizing the system's differential equation is useful for deciding parameters for critical dumping for a small disturbance. In order to avoid slippage, a velocity/acceleration limitation scheme is introduced. Several simulation results are presented with or without the velocity/acceleration limiter. The control rule and limiting method proposed are robot independent and hence can be applied to various kinds of mobile robots with a dead reckoning ability. This method was implemented on the autonomous mobile robot Yamabico-11. Experimental results obtained are close to the results with the velocity/acceleration limiter. >

Abstract: We carefully investigate the gravitational equations of the brane world, in which all the matter forces except gravity are confined on the 3-brane in a 5-dimensional spacetime with ${Z}_{2}$ symmetry. We derive the effective gravitational equations on the brane, which reduce to the conventional Einstein equations in the low energy limit. From our general argument we conclude that the first Randall-Sundrum-type theory predicts that the brane with a negative tension is an antigravity world and hence should be excluded from the physical point of view. Their second-type theory where the brane has a positive tension provides the correct signature of gravity. In this latter case, if the bulk spacetime is exactly anti--de Sitter spacetime, generically the matter on the brane is required to be spatially homogeneous because of the Bianchi identities. By allowing deviations from anti--de Sitter spacetime in the bulk, the situation will be relaxed and the Bianchi identities give just the relation between the Weyl tensor and the energy momentum tensor. In the present brane world scenario, the effective Einstein equations cease to be valid during an era when the cosmological constant on the brane is not well defined, such as in the case of the matter dominated by the potential energy of the scalar field.
