TL;DR: It is found that the nonlinearity of Einstein gravity induces the higher multipole modes even if only a quadrupole mode exists initially.
Abstract: We perform numerical simulations of a three-dimensional (3D) time evolution of pure gravitational waves. We use a conformally flat and K=0 initial condition for the evolution of the spacetime. We adopt several slicing conditions to check whether a long time integration is possible in those conditions. For the case in which the amplitude of the gravitational waves is low, a long time integration is possible by using the harmonic slice and the maximal slice, while in the geodesic slice (\ensuremath{\alpha}=1) it is not possible. As in the axisymmetric case and also in the 3D case, gravitational waves with a sufficiently high amplitude collapse by their self-gravity and their final fates seem to be as black holes. In this case, the singularity avoidance property of the harmonic slice seems weak, so that it may be inappropriate for the formation problems of the black hole. By means of the gauge-invariant wave extraction technique we compute the waveform of the gravitational waves at an outer region. We find that the nonlinearity of Einstein gravity induces the higher multipole modes even if only a quadrupole mode exists initially.

TL;DR: An international effort to summarize the current state of knowledge regarding acute exacerbations of IPF is presented, and proposed diagnostic criteria include subjective worsening over 30 days or less, new bilateral radiographic opacities, and the absence of infection or another identifiable etiology.
Abstract: The natural history of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) has been characterized as a steady, predictable decline in lung function over time. Recent evidence suggests that some patients may experience a more precipitous course, with periods of relative stability followed by acute deteriorations in respiratory status. Many of these acute deteriorations are of unknown etiology and have been termed acute exacerbations of IPF. This perspective is the result of an international effort to summarize the current state of knowledge regarding acute exacerbations of IPF. Acute exacerbations of IPF are defined as acute, clinically significant deteriorations of unidentifiable cause in patients with underlying IPF. Proposed diagnostic criteria include subjective worsening over 30 days or less, new bilateral radiographic opacities, and the absence of infection or another identifiable etiology. The potential pathobiological roles of infection, disordered cell biology, coagulation, and genetics are discussed, and future research directions are proposed.

TL;DR: In this paper, a classical-quantum hybrid algorithm for machine learning on near-term quantum processors, called quantum circuit learning, is proposed, which can approximate nonlinear functions.
Abstract: We propose a classical-quantum hybrid algorithm for machine learning on near-term quantum processors, which we call quantum circuit learning. A quantum circuit driven by our framework learns a given task by tuning parameters implemented on it. The iterative optimization of the parameters allows us to circumvent the high-depth circuit. Theoretical investigation shows that a quantum circuit can approximate nonlinear functions, which is further confirmed by numerical simulations. Hybridizing a low-depth quantum circuit and a classical computer for machine learning, the proposed framework paves the way toward applications of near-term quantum devices for quantum machine learning.

TL;DR: This essay summarizes the 40 years of research in immunology that revealed the framework of cytokine signaling, including identification of the IL-6 receptor, gp130, NF-IL6, STAT3, and SOCS-1, but also led to the development of a new therapy for chronic inflammatory diseases.
Abstract: This essay summarizes my 40 years of research in immunology. As a young physician, I encountered a patient with Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia, and this inspired me to study the structure of IgM. I began to ask how antibody responses are regulated. In the late 1960s, the essential role of T cells in antibody production had been reported. In search of molecules mediating T cell helper function, I discovered activities in the culture supernatant of T cells that induced proliferation and differentiation of B cells. This led to my life's work: studying one of those factors, interleukin-6 (IL-6). To my surprise, IL-6 turned out to play additional roles, including myeloma growth factor and hepatocyte-stimulating factor activities. More importantly, it was involved in a number of diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and Castleman's disease. I feel exceptionally fortunate that my work not only revealed the framework of cytokine signaling, including identification of the IL-6 receptor, gp130, NF-IL6, STAT3, and SOCS-1, but also led to the development of a new therapy for chronic inflammatory diseases.

TL;DR: It is reported that tingible body macrophages in the germinal centers of the spleen and lymph nodes strongly express MFG-E8, a protein that binds to apoptotic cells by recognizing phosphatidylserine and that enhances the engulfment of apoptosis cells by macrophage.
Abstract: Apoptotic cells expose phosphatidylserine and are swiftly engulfed by macrophages. Milk fat globule epidermal growth factor (EGF) factor 8 (MFG-E8) is a protein that binds to apoptotic cells by recognizing phosphatidylserine and that enhances the engulfment of apoptotic cells by macrophages. We report that tingible body macrophages in the germinal centers of the spleen and lymph nodes strongly express MFG-E8. Many apoptotic lymphocytes were found on the MFG-E8-/- tingible body macrophages, but they were not efficiently engulfed. The MFG-E8-/- mice developed splenomegaly, with the formation of numerous germinal centers, and suffered from glomerulonephritis as a result of autoantibody production. These data demonstrate that MFG-E8 has a critical role in removing apoptotic B cells in the germinal centers and that its failure can lead to autoimmune diseases.
