TL;DR: The larval stage of P. wellcomei is characterized by a trifid pre-alar seta and simple spine-like thoracic and abdominal setae.
Abstract: Under laboratory conditions, the development from egg to adult of P. wellcomei takes an average of 42 days. The larval tages are similar to those of P. arthuri, described by barretto (1941), but can be distinguished from this species by the ratio of the first to second antennal segment, by the form of the lateral head seate and prothoracic dorsolateral setae. The pupal stage of P. wellcomei is characterized by a trifid pre-alar seta and simple spine-like thoracic and abdominal setae.

TL;DR: A new species is proposed under the genus Lecithochirium Luehe, 1901, wich is enclosed in the third group of Freitas & Gomes distribuition (1971), differing from it mainly by possessing open type sinus sac, externai ejaculatory vesicle lacking, seminal vesicles divided into 3 parts and bigger eggs.
Abstract: In the present work the authors propose a new species under the genus Lecithochirium Luehe, 1901, wich is enclosed in the third group of Freitas & Gomes distribuition (1971), nearest to L. manteri Freitas & Gomes, 1971, differing from it mainly by possessing open type sinus sac, externai ejaculatory vesicle lacking, seminal vesicle divided into 3 parts and bigger eggs. The authors present Pomatomus saltatrix (L.) as a new host record for Parahemiurus merus (Linton, 1910) Yamaguti, 1938, giving the variations they found in measurements. To Acanthocollaritrema umbilicatum Trav., Freitas & Buhrnheim, 1965 they add the presence of complex genital atrium and for this reason suggest that probably Acanthocollaritrematinae Trav., Freitas & Buhrnheim, 1965 must be put under Cryptogonimidae Ciurea, 1933. They also refer Bucephalopsis callicotyle Kohn, 1962, Microcotyle pomatomus Goto, 1899 (Polystomata) and some immature cestode under Trypanorhyncha Diesing, 1863 (Cestode), in Pomatomus saltatrix (L.).

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined pollen grains of LORANTHACEAE and OLACACEAE of the subtropical ombrophilous forest of South of Brazil and found no clear similarities have been observed in the pollen morphology between the three families.
Abstract: Following our previous studies in PROTEACEAE, in this part of our Catalogue we have examined pollen grains of LORANTHACEAE and OLACACEAE of the subtropical ombrophilous forest of South of Brazil. No clear similarities have been observed in the pollen morphology between the three families. The evolution of pollen morphology in these families follow the development to parasitic forms. This can be observed through definite and constant pollen morphology of various genera of LORANTHACEAE and grains with poor defined apertures and simple exine structures in OLACACEAE. In relation to LORANTHACEAE, it is possible to differentiate the genera by their pollen morphology and, sometimes, groups of species, based on details of the exine structures (as in Struthanthus). Both species of OLACACEAE studied, belonging to different genera, present different pollen morphology.

TL;DR: Something happens near the time of hatch that turns the organisms of birds an unfavorable environment to the parasites and in several of the positive embryos the parasites found were remainders of the inoculum and resulting of the infection of the chorioallantoic membrane and its surrounding blood vessels.
Abstract: It has already been shown that the refractory state of chickens toward "T. (S.) cruzi" appears early at time of hatch. Fifty-four normal newly hatched and inoculated chicks were negative. it has also been verified that this refractory state persists even after hormonal bursectomy (eggs being injected with 2.5 mg of testosterone). Forty-four bursectomized and inoculated newly hatched chicks were negative. If we consider the fact that bursectomy causes a deficiency in the production of antibodies and gammaglobulins, the refractory state seems not to occur on account of a "natural antibody". Inoculations of "T. (S.) cruzi" made in 153 eggs (normal or treated with testosterone) produced infections of variable intensity in about 50% of them. Although chicks newly hatched from the same groups were always negative. As we have some embryos to be positive until the 21st day of incubation it seems probable that some of those not previously examined and from which these chicks were hatched might have been positive too. Nevertheless, all of them have not parasithemia. So, something happens near the time of hatch that turns the organisms of birds an unfavorable environment to the parasites. The most impressive idea is that in several of the positive embryos the parasites found were remainders of the inoculum and resulting of the infection of the chorioallantoic membrane and its surrounding blood vessels. However there is no doubt that in some embryos invasion of tissues by the parasites definetely occured with amastigote multiplication forms specially in the heart and liver. These amastigotes could persist for sometime after hatching but it seems that they degenerated and only excepcionally could accomplish its evolution to trypomastigote forms. And even when this happened the flagellates were destroyed as soon as the host cells burst. Probably that is the reason why they were not met in the peripheral blood. Parasithemia of the embryos results mainly of extracellular multiplication. Epimastigotes in binary division are very frequent.

TL;DR: Although showing a great variation in its characters, it belongs to a single species: Prosthogonimus ovalus (Rudolphi, 1803), which was remarked by Travassos (1922 and 1928) and experimentally confirmed by Boddeke (1960).
Abstract: The authors study the Brazilian material of the genus Prosthogonimus Luehe, 1899, deposited in the Helminthological Collection of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute, determined and without determination and conclude: although showing a great variation in its characters, it belongs to a single species: Prosthogonimus ovalus (Rudolphi, 1803). This variation was remarked by Travassos (1922 and 1928) and experimentally confirmed by Boddeke (1960). Forty nine figures and five measurement tables are presented, showing all these variations.

TL;DR: The significance of the pig inhuman salmonellosis is discussed particularly the presence of Salmonella in pre-crural and crural lymph nodes in the carcases of the animal passed fit for human consumption.
Abstract: The crural and pre-crural lymph nodes of 3.674 slaughtered pigs at the abattoir of Salvador - Bahia were examined for the presence of Salmonella. Fity hundred and three (503) strains belonging to fity two (52) serotypes were isolated from the pigs in a percentage of 13,69%. The serotypes E1 were most frequently in 48,70%, group E in 27,43% group C1 in 6,16%, group L in 4,97%, C2 in 4,77% and group D1 in 3,37%. Others serotypes were found: G1, N, J, E2, E3 and E. The significance of the pig inhuman salmonellosis is discussed particularly the presence of Salmonella in pre-crural and crural lymph nodes in the carcases of the animal passed fit for human consumption.

TL;DR: The pollen tetrads of nine species of Ericaceae from Santa Catarina State have been studied and the study of the pollen grains of ericaceae seems to be not usefull in the taxonomy of species of this group.
Abstract: The pollen tetrads of nine species of Ericaceae from Santa Catarina State have been studied. Between them only one especies of Gaultheria show smaller tetrads. The separation of the other species by pollen grain patterns is possible only between groups of species. Gaultheria was the only genus which present a relative greater variation on the pollen morphology. According to these results the study of the pollen grains of ericaceae seems to be not usefull in the taxonomy of species of this group.

TL;DR: Active mass campaign vaccinations with previous motivation of all segments of the population, specially the low-income groups instead of passive waiting of children in Vaccination Centers seems to be the best aproach to control poliomyelitis in this area.
Abstract: Based on the available data from the Hospital responsible for the care of paralitic poliomyelitis cases in Rio de Janeiro City (Guanabara State) and adjacent areas, and the laboratory studies carried out on these patients, the authors analize epidemiological aspects of poliomyelitis in a period of ten years (1961 to 1970). Paralitic poliomyelitis remains a public health problem, with a typical incidence in the less than 4 year age group. All three poliovirus types have been prevalent for at least one period of time during the last ten years. Trivalent oral vaccine has been used since 1961 but the vaccination levels achieved were not enough to a permanent control of the disease. A definite seasonal distribution of cases could not be observed with the available data. Active mass campaign vaccinations with previous motivation of all segments of the population, specially the low-income groups instead of passive waiting of children in Vaccination Centers seems to be the best aproach to control poliomyelitis in this area.

TL;DR: Results suggest a circulation of poliovirus in the region as high as in Guanabara State, the same occuring in relation to Coxsakie B; however titers considering Coxsackie B5.

TL;DR: It is concluded that the etiological agents of these tumors exerts their action on different cellular strains.
Abstract: Histopathological study of intracerebral implantation of sarcomas, performed in rats (fibrosarcomas) and mice (sarcoma 180). The intracerebral implantation of fibrosarcoma has developed in about 45 days a well limited tumor, with little infiltration of the adjacent nervous parenchyma, never streading to longer distances because the strong cohesion between its cells, with great differentiation of reticular fibers and collagen. On the contrary, the innoculation of sarcoma 180, chiefly of the ascitical form, has rapidly lead to a strong intracranial hipertension, with dissemination of neoplastic cells through the subarachnoid and intraventricular spaces. Both neoplasies were extending through the perivascular spaces, but in different ways: the sarcoma 180 had a very strong and rapid dissemination to long distances, while the fibrosarcoma disseminated only to the vessels adjacent develloping tumor. Based on personal observations and on specialized bibliography, we concluded that the etiological agents of these tumors exerts their action on different cellular strains.
