TL;DR: By simulated extension of the protofilament model, it is identified possible switch regions responsible for the bi-stable mechanical switch that generates the 0.8 Å difference in repeat distance.
Abstract: The bacterial flagellar filament is a helical propeller constructed from 11 protofilaments of a single protein, flagellin. The filament switches between left- and right-handed supercoiled forms when bacteria switch their swimming mode between running and tumbling. Supercoiling is produced by two different packing interactions of flagellin called L and R. In switching from L to R, the intersubunit distance ( approximately 52 A) along the protofilament decreases by 0.8 A. Changes in the number of L and R protofilaments govern supercoiling of the filament. Here we report the 2.0 A resolution crystal structure of a Salmonella flagellin fragment of relative molecular mass 41,300. The crystal contains pairs of antiparallel straight protofilaments with the R-type repeat. By simulated extension of the protofilament model, we have identified possible switch regions responsible for the bi-stable mechanical switch that generates the 0.8 A difference in repeat distance.

Abstract: A hemispherical dielectric resonator is arranged on a metal substrate to make a flat surface of the hemispherical dielectric resonator contact with the metal substrate, and a dielectric wave-guiding channel is connected with a curved side surface of the hemispherical dielectric resonator. Therefore, a dielectric resonance antenna in which the hemispherical dielectric resonator and the dielectric wave-guiding channel are placed on the same metal substrate is obtained. A signal transmitting through the dielectric wave-guiding channel is fed in the hemispherical dielectric resonator, the hemispherical dielectric resonator is resonated, and an electromagnetic wave is radiated. Therefore, the dielectric resonance antenna functions as a wave radiation device.

TL;DR: Various aspects of mechanistic roles of natively unfolded conformations of proteins are overviewed and discussed in this short review.
Abstract: From genes to cells there are many steps of hierarchical increments in building up complex frameworks that provide intricate networks of macromolecular interactions, through which cellular activities such as gene expression, signal processing, energy transduction and material conversion are dynamically organized and regulated. The self-assembly of macromolecules into large complexes is one such important step, but this process is by no means a simple aggregation of macromolecules with predefined, rigid complementary structures. In many cases the component molecules undergo either domain rearrangements or folding of disordered portions, which occurs only following binding to their correct partners. The partial disorder is used in some cases to prevent spontaneous assembly at inappropriate times or locations. It is also often used for finely tuning the equilibrium and activation energy of reversible binding. In other cases, such as protein translocation across membranes, an unfolded terminus appears to be the prerequisite for the process as an initiation signal, as well as the physical necessity to be taken into narrow channels. Self-assembly processes of viruses and bacterial flagella are typical examples where the induced folding of disordered chains plays a key role in regulating the addition of new components to a growing assembly. Various aspects of mechanistic roles of natively unfolded conformations of proteins are overviewed and discussed in this short review.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a method for estimating the external conditions of a partial circuit when used in an integrated circuit so that the partial circuit is designed in accordance with external conditions.
Abstract: There is no conventional method for precisely estimating under what external conditions each partial circuit, such as a library cell, is utilized in an actual integrated circuit at the time of designing the partial circuit. Therefore, by estimating the external conditions of a partial circuit when used in an integrated circuit so that the partial circuit is designed in accordance with the external conditions, the partial circuit having optimal performance for the external conditions can be designed. The step of external condition estimation can be formed so as to include the technology conversion step which technologically converts the layout for external condition extraction, that is prepared in advance, based on the technology information of an integrated circuit, which is the design objective; the layout extraction step of extracting layout extraction information which is external information influencing the operation of the partial circuit from the layout for external condition extraction that has been technologically converted; and the external condition calculation step of calculating external conditions of the partial circuit from the layout extraction information. In addition, by simply replacing the designed partial circuit with a partial circuit of a circuit for evaluation, the evaluation of the designed partial circuit can be easily carried out.

Abstract: A new speaker provides speech from which comparison snippets are extracted. The comparison snippets are compared with initial snippets stored in a recorded snippet database that is associated with a concatenative synthesizer. The comparison of the snippets to the initial snippets produces required sound units. A greedy selection algorithm is performed with the required sound units for identifying the smallest subset of the input text that contains all of the text for the new speaker to read. The new speaker then reads the optimally selected text and sound units are extracted from the human speech such that the recorded snippet database is modified and the speech synthesized adopts the voice quality and characteristics of the new speaker.

Abstract: The position of an eye is detectable with high precision from a face image of a person taken under near infrared illumination or the like. After pre-processing, the face image is subjected to brightness correction to increase the contrast between the sclera portion and iris portion of the eye. Brightness gradient vectors are calculated for the brightness-corrected image, and matching is performed between a brightness gradient image generated using the calculated brightness gradient vectors and an eye template. Further, matching with a pupil template is performed to correct the eye center position. Final positions of both eyes are then determined.

TL;DR: In this article, a trusted computer network is protected behind a gateway that includes a bastion host and screening router which blocks all URLs associated with the trusted network, and authentication is performed using one-time passwords that are stored on a portable storage device.
Abstract: The trusted computer network is protected behind a gateway that includes a bastion host and screening router which blocks all URLs associated with the trusted network. The bastion host includes a remote client authentication mechanism and web proxy component that verifies and translates incoming URL requests from authenticated remote clients. Authentication is performed using one-time passwords that are stored on a portable storage device. The user configures the portable storage device by operating configuration software from the protected side of the gateway. The portable storage device also stores plug-in software to enable the client computer to properly retrieve the one-time password and exchange authentication messages with the bastion host. Further security is obtained by basing the one-time password on an encrypted version of the user's PIN. A symmetric key used to encrypt the PIN is stored in a protected area within the portable storage device.
