28 Jan 1994TL;DR: In this article, a power amplifier amplifies a modulated carrier signal having an amplitude modulation component and a phase modulation component to generate a transmission signal, which is then compared with a burst control signal by a differential amplifier.
Abstract: A power amplifier amplifies a modulated carrier signal having an amplitude modulation component and a phase modulation component to generate a transmission signal. Part of the transmission signal is extracted by a monitor circuit. The detection signal detected by an envelope detector is compared with a burst control signal by a differential amplifier. The resulting error signal is input to a gain control terminal of a power amplifier through a sample and hold circuit, thus forming a feed-back loop. The sample and hold circuit outputs a sample signal during the transmission signal ramping-up and ramping-down periods, thus effectively turning ON the feed-back loop to an ON to control the transmission signal ramping-up and ramping-down. The sample and hold circuit outputs the hold signal during a modulated data transmission period, effectively turning OFF the feedback loop. As a result, a burst transmission output with a stable transmission power level can be obtained.

TL;DR: The success of these studies provides a novel proof-of-principle demonstration of lung tumor diagnosis through urinary volatile odorants, and should provide an impetus for similar searches for volatile diagnostic biomarkers in the urine of human lung cancer patients.
Abstract: A potential strategy for diagnosing lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer-related death, is to identify metabolic signatures (biomarkers) of the disease. Although data supports the hypothesis that volatile compounds can be detected in the breath of lung cancer patients by the sense of smell or through bioanalytical techniques, analysis of breath samples is cumbersome and technically challenging, thus limiting its applicability. The hypothesis explored here is that variations in small molecular weight volatile organic compounds ("odorants") in urine could be used as biomarkers for lung cancer. To demonstrate the presence and chemical structures of volatile biomarkers, we studied mouse olfactory-guided behavior and metabolomics of volatile constituents of urine. Sensor mice could be trained to discriminate between odors of mice with and without experimental tumors demonstrating that volatile odorants are sufficient to identify tumor-bearing mice. Consistent with this result, chemical analyses of urinary volatiles demonstrated that the amounts of several compounds were dramatically different between tumor and control mice. Using principal component analysis and supervised machine-learning, we accurately discriminated between tumor and control groups, a result that was cross validated with novel test groups. Although there were shared differences between experimental and control animals in the two tumor models, we also found chemical differences between these models, demonstrating tumor-based specificity. The success of these studies provides a novel proof-of-principle demonstration of lung tumor diagnosis through urinary volatile odorants. This work should provide an impetus for similar searches for volatile diagnostic biomarkers in the urine of human lung cancer patients.

01 Oct 1997TL;DR: In this article, a system that allows the user interface of a PC to be extended to the location of a remote television (TV) receiver such that video and audio signals generated by the PC can be viewed and heard on the remote TV receiver, and users at the TV may control the operations of the PC through input devices (27a, 27b, 27c, 27d).
Abstract: A system is disclosed which permits the user interface of a PC (2) to be extended to the location of a remote television (TV) receiver (4) such that video and audio signals generated by the PC may be viewed and heard on the remote TV receiver, and users at the TV may control the operations of the PC through input devices (27a, 27b, 27c, 27d) located at the TV receiver. Through the disclosed interface extension system, video signals and accompanying audio signals, if any, generated by the PC are transmitted locally to a receiver (8) coupled to the remote TV receiver.

09 Jul 1984TL;DR: In this article, a tricolor fluorescent lamp operating on a DC power source is described, which comprises an outer envelop defining therein a sealed space in which an ionizable medium is filled at low pressure.
Abstract: A tricolor fluorescent lamp operating on a DC power source is disclosed herein. The lamp comprises an outer envelop defining therein a sealed space in which an ionizable medium is filled at low pressure. Disposed within said outer envelop are three tubular envelops of a generally inverted U-shaped configuration which define correspondingly three separate discharge paths and which are coated with respective fluorescent substances emitting different colors. Three sequentially energized anodes are located within the sealed ends of the respective envelops and a common cathode is disposed in adjacently facing relation with the open ends of the envelops, such that the three envelops can be sequentially energized to emit the specific colors which are additively mixed in various proportions to produce a desired color as emitting from the whole lamp. Said U-shaped configuration of the tubular envelops emitting different colors results in the elongated discharge paths or increased light emitting surfaces within a limited space, providing a compact arrangement of the tricolor lamp to be well suitable for decorative illumination. Also, the bent portions of the U-shaped envelops are cooperative to provide a viewing surface on which all three color emitting sources can appear, which renders the tricolor lamp to be well adaptable for use as a picture element in a color display. Further, the sequential shifting of the discharge paths allows the common cathode to be constantly energized, preventing irregular color reproduction which would otherwise result from the interruption in energizing the cathode during the course of changing the colors to be emitted from the lamp.
