Apparatus and process for determining the deformability of the red corpuscles in the blood

Abstract: An apparatus for the measurement of the red blood cell deformability having a measurement cell formed of two electrically insulated compartments clamped mechanically one against the other, with a commercially available multipore membrane therebetween, each of the parts having inlet and outlet orifices as well as a cavity having one electrode and a lateral hole. One of the cavities contains a buffer, the other being intended to receive a suspension of red blood cells consisting of a dilution of a small volume of red blood cells in a large volume of an isotonic conducting buffer, having a volume concentration allowing substantially the transit of a single red blood cell at a time through the multipore membrane, under the action of a device for applying pressure connected to the cavity containing the suspension. An electronic device translates into transit times the electric impedance variations corresponding to the transit of each single red blood cell through the multipore membrane.

Unity and Diversity in the Behavioral and Natural Sciences

Abstract: There are those who believe that psychology is unusually marked by diversity. However, when one examines the natural sciences, one can also see considerable diversity. In physics there is a schism between microphysics and macrophysics. In biology, the common strings of DNA do not explain the differences in organismic levels of organization. It is proposed that there is indeed a paradigm that is common to all psychologists. All psychologists study behavior taking into account the situation (S) and the personality (P) of the subject, both interacting to determine the response (R). But every psychologist studies only one portion of this paradigm, and in the process multiplies the facts and theories in a manner that gives the impression of diversity. However, psychology is a young science!

Digital processor for processing echo samples for forming an image thereform, comprising : an image memory (20) comprising a plurality of memory pages suitable for simultaneous access and organized as rows and columns, each of the columns containing all samples of a same sector scanning line and each of the rows corresponding to samples having the same sampling delay with respect to transmission, the samples being so distributed among the pages that four points constituting a same neighbouring around a reconstructed pixel are in four different pages ; an address computer (22) for determining, for each pixel to be reconstructed, belonging to a rectangular display matrix, the addresses of the four neighbouring samples in the memory ; an interpolation operator (48) for determining the value of the pixel from the four neighbouring samples ; and means (60) for applying, to the output signal of the operator, a correction which is responsive to the sampling delay, thus to the depth of the sample, characterized in that said means are so arranged as to correct the amount of attenuation caused to the samples responsive to their depth and in that said means modify the output signal of the operator.
