TL;DR: Mothers' and fathers' Adult Attachment Interview classifications are used to predict a 3-year-old's responses to the Attachment Story Completion Task (ASCT), and a Q-sort coding procedure for the ASCT is presented, which yields scores on four attachment dimensions.
Abstract: In the present article on intergenerational transmission of attachment representations, we use mothers' and fathers' Adult Attachment Interview classifications to predict a 3-year-old's responses to the Attachment Story Completion Task (ASCT). We present a Q-sort coding procedure for the ASCT, which was developed for children as young as three. The Q-sort yields scores on four attachment dimensions (security, deactivation, hyperactivation, and disorganization). One-way ANOVAs revealed significant mother-child associations for each dimension, although results for the hyperactivation and disorganization dimensions were significant only according to contrast tests. Conversely, no father-child association was found, regardless of the dimension considered. Findings are discussed in terms of the respective part played by each parent in their children's emotional development.

TL;DR: In this article, the main results of three original studies on the equilibrium with a market of tradeable permits in a static framework are presented, and the consequences of the choice between giving free permits to firms and other possibilities.
Abstract: In this paper we present the main results of three original studies on the equilibrium with a market of tradeable permits in a static framework. In first study, we have considered an international equilibrium of two countries which depend on the quantity of permits to each country. The allocation is efficient if and only if it is proportional to efficient labor. A redistribution in favor of the less developed country implies a redistribution to this country but leads to a dilemma with efficiency. In the second study, we analyze the consequences of the choice between giving free permits to firms and other possibilities. We show that for equalizing incomes of production factors with there marginal productivities, each factor should receive a quantity of free permits proportional to its contribution to production. In the third study, we consider the partial equilibrium of an industry where each firm is characterized by a parameter combining production efficiency and pollution effect. We define a theoretical indicator of environmental efficiency and we analyze its properties.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors provide a physical basis for this phenomenological law based on a slider block model using a state and velocity-dependent friction law established in the laboratory, and use the slider block friction model to analyze quantitatively the displacement and velocity data preceding two landslides, Vaiont and La Clapiere.
Abstract: [1] Accelerating displacements preceding some catastrophic landslides have been found to display a finite time singularity of the velocity v ∼1/(tc − t) [Voight, 1988a, 1988b]. Here we provide a physical basis for this phenomenological law based on a slider block model using a state- and velocity-dependent friction law established in the laboratory. This physical model accounts for and generalizes Voight's observation: Depending on the ratio B/A of two parameters of the rate and state friction law and on the initial frictional state of the sliding surfaces characterized by a reduced parameter Xi, four possible regimes are found. Two regimes can account for an acceleration of the displacement. For B/A > 1 (velocity weakening) and Xi 1. In this case, the acceleration of the displacement evolves toward a stable sliding with a constant sliding velocity. The two other cases (B/A 1 and Xi > 1) give a deceleration of the displacement. We use the slider block friction model to analyze quantitatively the displacement and velocity data preceding two landslides, Vaiont and La Clapiere. The Vaiont landslide was the catastrophic culmination of an accelerated slope velocity. La Clapiere landslide was characterized by a peak of slope acceleration that followed decades of ongoing accelerating displacements succeeded by a restabilization. Our inversion of the slider block model in these data sets shows good fits and suggests a classification of the Vaiont landslide as belonging to the unstable velocity-weakening sliding regime and La Clapiere landslide as belonging to the stable velocity-strengthening regime.

TL;DR: In this article, a simple physical model was proposed to explain the accelerating displacements preceding some catastrophic landslides, based on a slider-block model with a state and velocity-dependent friction law.
Abstract: In a previous work (J. Geophys. Res. (2004)), we have proposed a simple physical model to explain the accelerating displacements preceding some catastrophic landslides, based on a slider-block model with a state- and velocity-dependent friction law. This model predicts two regimes of sliding, stable and unstable leading to a critical finite-time singularity. This model was calibrated quantitatively to the displacement and velocity data preceding two landslides, Vaiont (Italian Alps) and La Clapiere (French Alps), showing that the former (resp. later) landslide is in the unstable (resp. stable) sliding regime. Here, we test the predictive skills of the state- and velocity-dependent model on these two landslides with a variety of techniques using (i) a finite-time singularity power law, (ii) the state- and velocity-dependent friction law and (iii) resummation methods extrapolating from early times. For the Vaiont landslide, our model provides good predictions of the critical time of failure up to 20 days before the collapse. Tests are also presented on the predictability of the time of the change of regime for La Clapiere landslide.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used a rational expectation model of bubbles, based on the interplay between stochasticity and positive feedbacks of prices on returns and volatility, to test how this model classifies nine time series that have been previously considered as bubbles ending in crashes.
Abstract: Using a recently introduced rational expectation model of bubbles, based on the interplay between stochasticity and positive feedbacks of prices on returns and volatility, we develop a new methodology to test how this model classifies nine time series that have been previously considered as bubbles ending in crashes. The model predicts the existence of two anomalous behaviors occurring simultaneously: (i) super-exponential price growth and (ii) volatility growth, that we refer to as the “fearful singular bubble” regime. Out of the nine time series, we find that five pass our tests and can be characterized as “fearful singular bubbles”. The four other cases are the information technology Nasdaq bubble and three bubbles of the Hang Seng index ending in crashes in 1987, 1994 and 1997. According to our analysis, these four bubbles have developed with essentially no significant increase of their volatility. This paper thus proposes that speculative bubbles ending in crashes form two groups hitherto unrecognized, namely those accompanied by increasing volatility (reflecting increasing risk perception) and those without change of volatility (reflecting an absence of risk perception).

TL;DR: This article examined whether the labor market search model can account for the business cycle facts on the three uses of time: employment, unemployment, and non-participation, and showed that despite its good performance on the employment rate, this framework fails to mimic the empirical dynamics on the two other use of time, notably the strongly countercyclical behavior of the unemployment rate.

TL;DR: In this article, a mechanism operating in complex adaptive systems leading to dynamical pockets of predictability (prediction days), in which agents collectively take predetermined courses of action, transiently decoupled from past history, is described.
Abstract: We document a mechanism operating in complex adaptive systems leading to dynamical pockets of predictability (``prediction days''), in which agents collectively take predetermined courses of action, transiently decoupled from past history. We demonstrate and test it out-of-sample on synthetic minority and majority games as well as on real financial time series. The surprising large frequency of these prediction days implies a collective organization of agents and of their strategies which condense into transitional herding regimes.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate the behavior of the markup over the cycle and its contribution to inflation movements and show that the markup is fairly countercyclical and has a permanent effect on inflation through an error-correcting mechanism.
Abstract: The paper implements a consistent empirical strategy in order to investigate the behaviour of the markup over the cycle and its contribution to inflation movements. We model the price series as I(2) components and use polynomial cointegration in order to recover a long-run price schedule. We do not reject statistically the reduction of the I(2) framework to an I(1) model as from te mid 1980s. We observe that the markup is fairly counter-cyclical and has a permanent effect on inflation through an error-correcting mechanism. Structural and forecasting equations exhibiting good performance are therefore estimated.

TL;DR: This paper showed that critical events are able to reveal pre-existing "cracks" because they probe the social cohesion which is an indicator and predictor of future evolution of the system, and in some cases they foreshadow a bifurcation.
Abstract: We show that, provided one focuses on properly selected episodes, one can apply to the social sciences the same observational strategy that has proved successful in natural sciences such as astrophysics or geodynamics. For instance, in order to probe the cohesion of a society, one can, in different countries, study the reactions to some huge and sudden exogenous shocks, which we call Dirac shocks. This approach naturally leads to the notion of structural (as opposed or complementary to temporal) forecast. Although structural predictions are by far the most common way to test theories in the natural sciences, they have been much less used in the social sciences. The Dirac shock approach opens the way to testing structural predictions in the social sciences. The examples reported here suggest that critical events are able to reveal pre-existing "cracks" because they probe the social cohesion which is an indicator and predictor of future evolution of the system, and in some cases they foreshadow a bifurcation. We complement our empirical work with numerical simulations of the response function ("damage spreading") to Dirac shocks in the Sznajd model of consensus build-up. We quantify the slow relaxation of the difference between perturbed and unperturbed systems, the conditions under which the consensus is modified by the shock and the large variability from one realization to another.

Abstract: This paper investigates conditional variance patterns in daily return series of stock market indices in the G-7 and 6 selected economies of Central and Eastern Europe. For this purpose, various linear and asymmetric GARCH models are employed. The analysis is conducted for Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US for which the TSX, CAC-40, DAX-100, BCI, Nikkei-225, FTSE-100 and DJ-30 indices are respectively considered over the period 1987 to 2002. Furthermore, the official indices of Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Russian, Slovak and Slovene stock markets are also studied, i.e. the PX-50, BUX, WIGI, RFS, SAX-16 and SBI, respectively, over 1991/1995 to 2002. The estimation results reveal that the selected stock returns for the G-7 can be reasonably well modelled using linear specifications whereas the overwhelming majority of the stock indices from Central and Eastern Europe can be much better characterised using asymmetric models. In other words, stock markets of the transition economies exhibit much more asymmetry because negative shocks hit much harder these markets than positive news. It also turns out that these changes do not occur in a smooth manner but happen pretty brusquely. This corroborates the usual observation that emerging stock markets may collapse much more suddenly and recover more slowly than G-7 stock markets.

Abstract: This paper addresses the issue of estimating the number of breaks and their locations in the monthly US inflation series using two different approaches to testing for structural changes. The first approach considers Bai and Perron's selection procedure based on a sequence of tests. This approach focuses on the instability problem in time. The second method uses a test similar to the one based on Kolmogorov–Smirnov statistics applied to the evolutionary spectrum. The results obtained are similar and economically significant.

Abstract: The paper deals with matrimonial rings, a particular kind of cycles in kinship networks which result when spouses are linked to each other by ties of consanguinity or affinity. By taking a network-analytic perspective, the paper endeavours to put this classical issue of structural kinship theory on a general basis, such as to allow conclusions which go beyond isolated discussions of particular ring types (like "cross-cousin marriage", "sister exchange", and so forth). The paper provides a definition and formal analysis of matrimonial rings, a method of enumerating all isomor-phism classes of matrimonial rings within given genealogical bounds, a series of network-analytic tools - such as the census graph - to analyse ring structures in empirical kinship networks, and techniques to effectuate these analyses with the computer program pajek. A program package containing the required macros can be downloaded from the web. The working of the method is illustrated at the example of kinship networks from four different parts of the world (South-America, Africa, Australia and Europe).

TL;DR: In this article, the authors argue that Adam Smith and Jean-Jacques Rousseau are confronted with the same question: how to explain values from a naturalistic origin of morality.
Abstract: In this paper I argue that Bernard Mandeville, Jean Jacques Rousseau and Adam Smith are confronted to the same question: how to explain values from a naturalistic origin of morality. An in-depth analysis of their theories of human nature and market society will show that Rousseau is further from Mandeville's analysis than Smith acknowledged, and it is Smith who will in fact take important elements from Mandeville to build his own theoretical system and, thereby, follow the path of economic analysis beyond moral considerations.

TL;DR: The Strategie europeenne pour l'emploi (SEE) as discussed by the authors was created by the Council of the European Union to support the developpement of l’emploi feminin.

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to apply a nonparametric methodology developed by Donoho et al(2003 IEEE Trans. Signal Processing 53614–27) for estimating an autocovariance sequence to the statistical analysis of the return of securities and discuss the advantages offered by this approach over other existing methods such as fixed-window-length segmentation procedures. Theoretical properties of adaptivity of this estimation method have been proved for a specific class of time series, namely the class of locally stationary processes, with an autocovariance structure which varies slowly over time in most cases but might exhibit abrupt changes of regime. This method is based on an algorithm that selects empirically from the data the tiling of the time–frequency plane which exposes best in the least-squares sense the underlying second-order time-varying structure of the time series, and so may properly describe the time-inhomogeneous variations of speculative prices. The applications we consider here mainly concern t...

Abstract: Long-term trends of financial markets are considered as a growth phenomenon, with a steady influx of money needed to ensure a sustainable growth. A study is made of the impact of money supply, dividends and interest rates, on the growth of a market. A method to estimate the level of investment of cash into stocks is introduced, thereby eventually also identifying periods when stock markets are likely to have topped.

TL;DR: The Barankin bound is derived when the multiplicative noise is complex-valued and non-circular enough and the Cramer-Rao bound is not a tight bound anymore and has to be replaced with the so-called Baranksin bound which is tighter but more complicate.
Abstract: We focus on harmonic retrieval in multiplicative and additive noise. At low SNR, Maximum-Likelihood based estimate does not reach the Cramer-Rao bound. Actually, at low SNR, the Cramer-Rao bound is not a tight bound anymore and has to be replaced with the so-called Barankin bound which is tighter but more complicate. In this paper, we derive the Barankin bound when the multiplicative noise is complex-valued and non-circular. We observe that the Barankin bound is much more greater than the Cramer-Rao bound, especially when the multiplicative noise is not non-circular enough.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that kinds cannot be property-bearers in a more genuine sense than properties, that they are not absolutely countable, whether conceived according to science or common sense, and they are dependent on individual objects.
Abstract: In E.J. Lowe's ontology, (individual) objects are property-bearers which 1) have identity and 2) are countable. This makes it possible to become or cease to be an object, by beginning or ceasing to fulfil one of these conditions. But the possibility of switching fundamental ontological categories should be excluded. Furthermore, Lowe does not show that “quasi-individuals” (which are not countable) can exist. I argue against Lowe that kinds cannot be property-bearers in a more genuine sense than properties, that they are not absolutely countable, whether conceived according to science or common sense, and that they are dependent on individual objects.
