TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed the international media coverage of the Romanian protests from January-February 2012 and found that the media depicts endemic corruption and public discontent as the underlying profound causes for the protests, where austerity was the trigger.
Abstract: This paper deals with the international media coverage of the Romanian protests from January-February 2012. The purpose is to analyze whether the events managed to transcend the borders of national representation in the media. Our hypothesis is that, due to the fact that Romania is not considered to be a major player in world politics and economy, the representation of the social protests in foreign publications will be mainly informative, describing the series of events as a consequence of the economic hardship and integrating this social movement in the wave of protests which occurred all over Europe, after the economic crisis of 2008. Results of a combined approach to the analysis of newspaper content integrating both qualitative and quantitative methods suggest that the international media depicts endemic corruption and public discontent as the underlying profound causes for the protests, where austerity was the trigger.

TL;DR: In this article, a model of the French economy in the 19th century is presented, to test the consistency of the national income series that are currently being developed and, second, to highlight the factors that account for the slowing down of the country's economic growth during the middle decades of that century.

TL;DR: In this article, an empirical study of the distribution of black prices among 120 Bavarian locations at two dates, the beginning of July, 1947 and the end of June, 1948 is presented.
Abstract: This paper is an empirical study of the distribution of black prices among 120 Bavarian locations at two dates, the beginning of July, 1947 and the end of June, 1948. It shows huge differences in the liquidity of those goods either when measured with the coefficient of variation or the number of locations in which those goods were traded. The main finding is that liquidity of cigarette was very high either when measured by the coefficient of variation and or the number of counties that traded them. This made them special, even when compared with a pure fiat object such as the US dollar. Consistently with the insights of the modern theory of money, the high liquidity of cigarettes is indicative of its use as money.

TL;DR: A French version of both Need for uniqueness scales is proposed, investigated the scales' structure in student samples from two French-speaking countries as well as measures of internal and external validity, and provided advice on choosing by the scale most appropriate to the researcher's aims.
Abstract: Need for uniqueness represents the need for people to feel different and distinguish themselves from others. Two major scales exist that measure this need: the Need for Uniqueness scale (NfU; Snyde...

TL;DR: The testing of shared properties in the structure of low rank (LR) plus identity CM, which are appropriate for radar processing, are explored, and two new generalized likelihood ratio tests are derived.
Abstract: Testing the similarity of covariance matrices (CMs) from groups of observations has been shown to be a relevant approach for change and/or anomaly detection in synthetic aperture radar images. Although the term “similarity” usually refers to equality or proportionality, we explore the testing of shared properties in the structure of low rank (LR) plus identity CM, which are appropriate for radar processing. Specifically, we derive two new generalized likelihood ratio tests to infer: 1) on the equality of the LR signal component of CMs and 2) on the proportionality of the LR signal component of CMs. The formulation of the second test involves nontrivial optimization problems for which we tailor efficient majorization–minimization algorithms. Eventually, the proposed detection methods enjoy interesting properties that are illustrated on simulations and on an application to real data for change detection.
