Abstract: Using a large sample of accounting data for non financial companies in France on the period 1990-2004, the paper studies the interactions between macroeconomic shocks and companies financial fragility. We consider links in both directions, namely whether .rms. bankruptcies are affected by macroeconomic variables, and, conversely, whether bankruptcies determine the business cycle. We estimate forecasting equations for firms' bankruptcy using Schumway's (2001) approach and study the joint dynamics of defaults and macroeconomic variables, in order to measure the so-called "second round" effects. We illustrate how the model can be used for stress testing.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a metasurface-tuning approach to reduce spurious scattering from parasitic dielectric objects by burying a set of ground-based radomes.
Abstract: We present the concept of metasurface-tuning as a solution to reduce spurious scattering from parasitic dielectric objects. By burying metasurfaces in the dielectric volume, it is possible to control the scattering behavior of the parasitic object and camouflage it with respect to a given dielectric reference. A transmission-line model is proposed for the metasurface’s surface impedance retrieval. Microwave near-field and far-field full-wave simulation results validate the scattering reduction of the dielectric parasitic object for both normal and off-normal transverse-electric and transverse-magnetic polarized incident waves. The frequency stability and robustness to a change of dielectric reference of the proposed technique is also studied in a frequency range around 10 GHz. The study suggests that metasurface-tuning can be a polarization-insensitive and frequency-adjustable solution to reduce spurious scattering from high-index, dielectric mechanical pieces such as seams in large ground-based radomes.

TL;DR: Results show that the dynamic approach improves the forecasting performance of the generated GP models, especially those obtained from the adaptive‐random training‐subset selection method applied to the whole set of training samples.
Abstract: Volatility is a key variable in option pricing, trading and hedging strategies. The purpose of this paper is to improve the accuracy of forecasting implied volatility using an extension of genetic programming (GP) by means of dynamic training-subset selection methods. These methods manipulate the training data in order to improve the out of sample patterns fitting. When applied with the static subset selection method using a single training data sample, GP could generate forecasting models which are not adapted to some out of sample fitness cases. In order to improve the predictive accuracy of generated GP patterns, dynamic subset selection methods are introduced to the GP algorithm allowing a regular change of the training sample during evolution. Four dynamic training-subset selection methods are proposed based on random, sequential or adaptive subset selection. The latest approach uses an adaptive subset weight measuring the sample difficulty according to the fitness cases errors. Using real data from SP500 index options, these techniques are compared to the static subset selection method. Based on MSE total and percentage of non fitted observations, results show that the dynamic approach improves the forecasting performance of the generated GP models, specially those obtained from the adaptive random training subset selection method applied to the whole set of training samples.

TL;DR: In this article, a quantitative comparison of the financial patterns of non-financial European firms for seven Continental European countries and the period 1991-2001 is provided, showing that differences between European countries remain highly significant so that the first hypothesis is not validated.
Abstract: This paper provides a quantitative comparison of the financial patterns of non-financial European firms for seven Continental European countries and the period 1991-2001. Our analytical framework departs from the common one as we consider that long-term and short-term sources of funds have to be analysed separately. Using the BACH database, principal component analysis, cluster analysis and econometrical tests are carried out in order to test for two hypotheses : i) there is a tendency toward grouping around a common corporate financial pattern; ii) there is a general tendency across countries toward less bank financing. We find that differences between European countries remain highly significant so that the first hypothesis is not validated. The second hypothesis is rejected with the long-term intermediation ratio but validated with the short-term one. Indeed, econometrical tests lead to a strong conclusion : the existence of a common trend toward disintermediation of short-term financing. The banking function of allocating liquidity for day-to-day business and providing a certain liquidity insurance to firms is declining whatever the size of firms.
