Reduction and emergence in the physical sciences: Reply to Rueger

Abstract: I analyse Rueger’s application of Kim’s model of functional reduction to the relation between the thermal conductivities of metal bars at macroscopic and atomic scales. 1) I show that it is a misunderstanding to accuse the functional reduction model of not accounting for the fact that there are causal powers at the micro-level which have no equivalent at the macro-level. The model not only allows but requires that the causal powers by virtue of which a functional predicate is defined, are only a subset of the causal powers of the properties filling the functional specification. 2) The fact that the micro-equation does not converge to the macro-equation in general but only under the constraint of a “solvability condition” does not show that reduction is impossible, as Rueger claims, but only that reduction requires inter-level constraints. 3) Rueger tries to analyse inter-level reduction with the conceptual means of intra-level reduction. This threatens the coherence of his analysis, given that it makes no sense to ascribe macroproperties such as thermal conductivity to entities at the atomic level. Ignoring the distinction between theses two senses of “reduction” is especially confusing because they have opposite directions: in intra-level reduction, the more detailed account reduces to the less detailed one, whereas in inter-level reduction, the less detailed theory is reduced to the more detailed one. 4) Finally I criticize Rueger’s way of using Wimsatt’s criteria for emergence in terms of non-aggregativity, to construct a concept of synchronic emergence. It is wrong to require, over and above non-aggregativity, irreducibility as a criterion for emergence.

Multiple paper monies in Sweden, 1789-1903: Substitution or complementarity?

Abstract: Complementarity of money mean that two or more kinds of monies together fulfil the demand of the users better than they would without the existence of the other(s). In this paper we study complementarity between paper monies in Sweden. We address four questions: 1) What was used as money on a macro level (money supply) and on a micro level (monetary remittances)? 2) What was the relative value of different monies in parallel circulation? 3) Was there seasonal variations in use and/or value? 4) Was there geographical variations in use and value? What we find is that the complementarity helped to solve the problem of providing sufficient liquidity domestically over time and space and thus and to keep a stable value of the currency.

Energy Price Transmissions during Extreme Movements

Abstract: This paper investigates price transmissions across European energy forward markets at distinct maturities during both normal times and extreme fluctuation periods. To this end, we rely on the traditional Granger causality test (in mean) and its multivariate extension in tail distribution developped by Candelon, Joets, and Tokpavi (2012). Considering forward energy prices at 1, 10, 20, and 30 months, it turns out that no significant causality exists between markets at regular times whereas comovements are at play during extreme periods especially in bear markets. More precisely, energy prices comovements appear to be stronger at short horizons than at long horizons, testifying an eventual Samuelson mechanism in the maturity prices curve. Diversi cation strategies tend to be more efficient as maturity increases.

Perspectives of injectable long acting antiretroviral therapies for HIV treatment or prevention: understanding potential users’ ambivalences

Abstract: Recent clinical trial data showed that injectable long-acting antiretroviral treatment (LA-ART) every four or eight weeks could become an alternative option for HIV treatment or prevention. The purpose of our study was to explore perceptions and potential users' points of views of this new mode of administration through individuals' therapeutic itinerary and their singular history with ART. Between 2018 and 2019, a qualitative study was conducted in two University Hospitals in Paris, France. In-depth interviews were conducted with 15 virologically controlled People Living with HIV (PLWH) and 13 men on pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for at least six months. Interviews, focused on the daily experience with ART, were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using thematic content analysis. Collected discourses were organized around three emergent concerns: social, material and experimental. Each of these concerns was perceived as ambivalent, balanced by skepticism and hope. It revealed the complexity of each individual's relationship to their HIV treatment or PrEP, leading to balance the injectable LA-ART popularity reported within clinical trials. This new mode of administration may be a suitable alternative for some PLWH and PrEP users, a "simplification" compared to the oral route. It opens a window for "customizable" ART-treatment according to individuals' lives.
