Abstract: We proposed an Upstream Multi-Wavelength Shared (UMWS) PON architecture based on a tunable self-seeding Fabry-Perot laser diode (FP-LD) at ONU. The performances of the wavelength and power stability, side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR), tuning range for the proposed tunable self-seeding laser module at ONU are experimentally investigated. The BER is measured with direct modulation on FP-LD of 1.25 Gbps upstream data. The extensive simulations not only evaluate the enhanced performance from the upstream wavelength-sharing, but also for the first time investigate the impact of channel Switch Latency (SL) on the network performance.

Abstract: PIV measurements were performed at mid hub to shroud section inside the impeller of a vaned diffuser pump model working with air. The measurements were restricted to the outlet section of the impeller where the diffuser blades interacted with the impeller flow. Each PIV measuring plane was related to one particular impeller blade to blade channel and analysed according to different relative positions of the vaned diffuser. Two frame change models were considered: the so-called frozen rotor approach for different impeller passage positions relative to the vaned diffuser and a fully unsteady calculation of the whole pump. Comparisons between numerical and experimental results are presented and discussed for a specific mass flow rate corresponding to an off-design point for the impeller and a design point for the vaned diffuser.Copyright © 2011 by ASME

Abstract: Physical activity (PA) and the energy expenditure it generates (PAEE) are increasingly shown to have impacts on everybody's health (e.g. development of chronic diseases) and to be key factors in maintaining the physical autonomy of elderlies. The SVELTE project objective was to develop an autonomous actimeter, easily wearable and with several days of autonomy, which could record a subject's physical activity during his/her daily life and estimate the associated energy expenditure. A few prototypes and dedicated algorithms were developed based on laboratory experiments. The identification of physical activity patterns algorithm shows good performances (79% of correct identification), based on a trial in semi-free-living conditions. The assessment of the PAEE computation algorithm is under validation based on a clinical trial.

Abstract: In an increasingly volatile, globalized, and demanding market, Lean is the differential factor that could increase companies' competitiveness and efficiency. In spite of the abundant literature addressing Lean system's technical aspects, there has been little discussion on the importance of national culture in Lean's implementation process. It has been proven that the implementation of lean practices do not always produce the intended results and national culture has been highlighted as one of the contextual variables that may explain the success or failure of Lean practices. Since companies are influenced by the culture of the country where they're located, some comparative advantages may occur due to their location, making it necessary to adjust Lean's implementation process to national culture. The purpose of this article is to propose a literature review to examine the relationship between national culture and Lean Management. This study explores the assertions and/or contradictions found in the literature regarding the cultural dimensions that may act as enablers or withholders to the lean principles and practices.

Abstract: Industrial Bombyx mori silk yarns have been degummed and mechanically tested. The principal mechanical characteristics of these yarns have been obtained and compared, before and after degumming. It has been observed that the sericin sheath surrounding the silk fibres plays a bigger part in determining behaviour than had been expected. The initial gradients of the force/strain curves were reduced by 21% when the sericin were removed and this was associated with a 20% fall in the failure forces obtained. The force/strain curves up to failure of the yarns were completely modified with the removal of the sericin and showed a multi-level fracture surface rather than a net failure. This variation was not due to the treatment involved in removing the sericin. The role of the sericin sheath has been studied using scanning electron microscopy with in situ tensile testing. The sericin have been seen to act like a matrix, as in a fibre composite with the silk fibres as the reinforcements. As in a composite, the force transfer between the sericin sheath and the inner fibre is controlled by shear forces at the interface between the two and result in the modified fracture morphology and physical properties.
