Abstract: An enthalpy-based thermal lattice Boltzmann model is introduced for simulating a class of strongly coupled thermo-hydrodynamic problems. The novelty of the model lies in the formulation of an enthalpy density distribution function to simulate the temperature field, in place of the existing internal energy density distribution function. The proposed model has a clear advantage over the earlier internal energy density distribution function based thermal lattice Boltzmann model, in a sense that it can simulate certain classes of thermofluidic transport problems without facing mathematical difficulties in handling with additional energy source terms.

Abstract: The objective of this work is to investigate numerically the different physical mechanisms of the transition to turbulence of a separated boundary-layer flow over an airfoil at low angle of attack. In this study, the spectral elements code Nek 5000 is used to simulate the flow over a SD7003 wing section at an angle of attack of α = 4 ∘ . Several laminar cases are first studied from R e = 2000 to R e = 10000 , and a gradual increase of the Reynolds number is then performed in order to investigate one transitional case at R e = 20000 . Computations are compared with measurements where the instability mechanisms in the separated zone and near wake zone have been analyzed. The mechanism of transition is investigated, where the DMD (Dynamic Mode Decomposition) is used in order to extract the main physical modes of the flow and to highlight the interaction between the transition and the wake flow. The results suggest that the transition process appears to be physically independent of the wake flow, while the LSB shedding process is locked-in with the von Karman instability and acts as a sub-harmonic.

Abstract: BEST PATHS (acronym for “BEyond State-of-the-art Technologies for rePowering Ac corridors and multi-Terminal HVDC Systems”) is a collaborative project within the FP7 framework of the European Commission that includes an MgB2-based power transmission line among its five constituent demonstrators. Led by Nexans and bringing together transmission operators, industry and research organizations, this demonstrator aims at validating the novel MgB2 technology for very high power transfer (gigawatt range). The project foresees the development of a monopole cable system operating in helium gas in the range of 5–10 kA/200–320 kV, corresponding to a transmitted power from 1 to 3.2 GW. The main research and demonstration activities that will be pursued over the four-year project duration are: 1) development and manufacturing of MgB2 wires and of the cable conductor; 2) design and manufacturing of the HVDC electrical insulation of the cable; 3) optimization of the required cryogenic system; 4) electromagnetic field analysis; 5) design and construction of a prototype electrical feeding system, including terminations and connectors; 6) testing of the demonstrator; 7) study of grid connection procedures and integration of a superconducting link into a transmission grid; and finally, 8) a socio-economic analysis of the MgB2 power transmission system. CIGRE recommendations will be used to take into account the established international practices, and guidance will be given on newly addressed technical aspects. An overview of the project is presented in this paper, including the main tasks and challenges ahead, as well as the partners and their roles.

Abstract: The Mediterranean coastal region is prone to high-intensity rainfall events that are frequently associated with devastating flash floods. This paper discusses the role of a karst aquifer system in the flash floods of a Mediterranean river, the Lez river. Most of the Lez river watershed is located on karst terrains where interactions between surface water and groundwater take place. During extreme rainfall events, the presence of fractures and well-developed karst features in carbonate terrains enhances the infiltration processes and involves the concentration of the recharge into highly organized and permeable flow paths. The groundwater, therefore, quickly moves towards the natural outlets of the karst system. The influence of the Lez karst aquifer system on the associated river floods dynamics is analysed while considering the spatially distributed rainfall, as well as the time series of the groundwater level within the aquifer and of the Lez river discharge measured at various gauging stations. Special attention is given to the relative importance of the surface and underground processes involved in flash flood genesis. It is shown that the karst groundwater contributes to flash floods under certain conditions, while high-rate pumping within the karst aquifer, which generates significant drawdown, may mitigate flash floods under other conditions.

Abstract: Thin soft elastic layers serving as joints between relatively rigid bodies may function as sealants, thermal, electrical, or mechanical insulators, bearings, or adhesives. When such a joint is stressed, even though perfect adhesion is maintained, the exposed free meniscus in the thin elastic layer becomes unstable, leading to the formation of spatially periodic digits of air that invade the elastic layer, reminiscent of viscous fingering in a thin fluid layer. However, the elastic instability is reversible and rate-independent, disappearing when the joint is unstressed. We use theory, experiments, and numerical simulations to show that the transition to the digital state is sudden (first-order), the wavelength and amplitude of the fingers are proportional to the thickness of the elastic layer, and the required separation to trigger the instability is inversely proportional to the in-plane dimension of the layer. Our study reveals the energetic origin of this instability and has implications for the strength of polymeric adhesives; it also suggests a method for patterning thin films reversibly with any arrangement of localized fingers in a digital elastic memory, which we confirm experimentally.
