TL;DR: A thermodynamically consistent integrator is developed on the basis of the General Equation for Non-Equilibrium Reversible–Irreversible Coupling, GENERIC framework so as to guarantee the satisfaction of first principles.
Abstract: In this work we study several learning strategies for fluid sloshing problems based on data. In essence, a reduced-order model of the dynamics of the free surface motion of the fluid is developed under rigorous thermodynamics settings. This model is extracted from data by exploring several strategies. First, a linear one, based on the employ of Proper Orthogonal Decomposition techniques is analyzed. Second, a strategy based on the employ of Locally Linear Embedding is studied. Finally, Topological Data Analysis is employed to the same end. All the three distinct possibilities rely on a numerical integration scheme to advance the dynamics in time. This thermodynamically consistent integrator is developed on the basis of the General Equation for Non-Equilibrium Reversible–Irreversible Coupling, GENERIC [M. Grmela and H.C Oettinger (1997). Phys. Rev. E. 56 (6): 6620–6632], framework so as to guarantee the satisfaction of first principles (particularly, the laws of thermodynamics). We show how the resulting method employs a few degrees of freedom, while it allows for a realistic reconstruction of the fluid dynamics of sloshing processes under severe real-time constraints. The proposed method is shown to run faster than real time in a standard laptop.

30 Jun 2014TL;DR: A supervised feature extraction method is proposed which is able to select relevant features for human recognition to mitigates the impact of covariates and hence improve the recognition performance.
Abstract: Clothing, carrying conditions, and other intra-class variations, also referred as ”covariates”, affect the performance of gait recognition systems. This paper proposes a supervised feature extraction method which is able to select relevant features for human recognition to mitigates the impact of covariates and hence improve the recognition performance. The proposed method is evaluated using CASIA Gait Database (Dataset B) and the experimental results suggest that our method yields attractive results.

TL;DR: In this paper, a simple thermodynamic model based on the equality of water fugacity in the liquid water and hydrate phases was developed, and the results of this model are compared with some selected experimental data from the literature.
Abstract: With the objective of estimating the solubility of a pure hydrocarbon hydrate former in pure water in equilibrium with gas hydrates, a simple thermodynamic model has been developed, based on the equality of water fugacity in the liquid water and hydrate phases. The solid solution theory of van der Waals−Platteeuw has been applied to calculate the fugacity of water in the hydrate phase. The Henry's law approach and the activity coefficient method have been used to calculate the fugacities of the hydrocarbon hydrate former and water in the liquid water phase, respectively. The results of this model are compared with some selected experimental data from the literature. Acceptable agreements between the model predictions and experimental data demonstrate the reliability of the model developed in this work. Finally, the possible errors sources in model predictions are discussed.

10 Dec 2013TL;DR: This paper investigates the fault-tolerant operation of an open-end five-phase drive, i.e. a multi-phase machine fed with a dual-inverter supply, and proposes strategies to handle inverter switch short-circuit faults.
Abstract: Multi-phase machines are known for their fault-tolerant capability. However, star-connected machines have no fault tolerance to inverter switch short-circuit fault. This paper investigates the fault-tolerant operation of an open-end five-phase drive, i.e. a multi-phase machine fed with a dual-inverter supply. Inverter switch short-circuit faults are considered and handled with various degrees of reconfiguration. Theoretical developments and experimental results validate the proposed strategies.
