Abstract: AIMS: We present data from the CFHTLS Strong Lensing Legacy Survey (SL2S). Due to the unsurpassed combined depth, area and image quality of the Canada-France-Hawaii Legacy Survey it is becoming possible to uncover a large, statistically well-defined sample of strong gravitational lenses which spans the dark halo mass spectrum predicted by the concordance model from galaxy to cluster haloes. METHODS: We describe the development of several automated procedures to find strong lenses of various mass regimes in CFHTLS images. RESULTS: The preliminary sample of about 40 strong lensing candidates discovered in the CFHTLS T0002 release, covering an effective field of view of 28 deg$^2$ is presented. These strong lensing systems were discovered using an automated search and consist mainly of gravitational arc systems with splitting angles between 2 and 15 arcsec. This sample shows for the first time that it is possible to uncover a large population of strong lenses from galaxy groups with typical halo masses of about $10^{13}h^{-1}M_\odot$. We discuss the future evolution of the SL2S project and its main scientific aims for the next 3 years, in particular our observational strategy to extract the hundreds of gravitational rings also present in these fields.

Abstract: It is generally assumed that, in mammalian cells, preribosomal RNAs are entirely processed before nuclear exit. Here, we show that pre-40S particles exported to the cytoplasm in HeLa cells contain 18S rRNA extended at the 3′ end with 20–30 nucleotides of the internal transcribed spacer 1. Maturation of this pre-18S rRNA (which we named 18S-E) involves a cytoplasmic protein, the human homolog of the yeast kinase Rio2p, and appears to be required for the translation competence of the 40S subunit. By tracking the nuclear exit of this precursor, we have identified the ribosomal protein Rps15 as a determinant of preribosomal nuclear export in human cells. Interestingly, inhibition of exportin Crm1/Xpo1 with leptomycin B strongly alters processing of the 5′-external transcribed spacer, upstream of nuclear export, and reveals a new cleavage site in this transcribed spacer. Completion of the maturation of the 18S rRNA in the cytoplasm, a feature thought to be unique to yeast, may prevent pre-40S particles from initiating translation with pre-mRNAs in eukaryotic cells. It also allows new strategies for the study of preribosomal transport in mammalian cells.

Abstract: Calcium phosphate coatings on dental implants enhance integration of the material. Resorption of the ceramic coatings has raised some concern about the behavior of the bone-implant interfaces after the coating disappearance. Substitution of the OH- ions by fluoride in the hydroxylapatite (HA) lattice makes the calcium phosphate more stable. We investigated the degradation rate of dental implants with 50- and 100-microm coatings of HA, fluorapatite (FA), or fluorhydroxylapatite (FHA). The implants were inserted in dog jaws and retrieved for histological analysis after 3, 6, and 12 months. The thickness of the calcium phosphate coatings was evaluated using an image analysis device. A relative resorption index and its standard deviation were studied. HA and FA coatings (even at 100-microm thickness) were almost totally degraded within the implantation period. In contrast, the FHA coatings did not show significant degradation during the same period. The standard deviation showed that the resorption process for FHA with thicknesses of 50 or 100 microm was the same. Such a difference was not observed between the 50- and 100-microm thick coatings of FA and HA. In conclusion, the FHA coatings showed good integration in the bone tissue and lasted much longer than classic calcium phosphate coatings.
