TL;DR: Quantitative online measurements of five nitrated phenol compounds in ambient air show that these five NPs are potentially important contributors to absorption at 370 nm measured by an aethalometer and account for 4 ± 2% of UV light absorption by brown carbon.
Abstract: We show for the first time quantitative online measurements of five nitrated phenol (NP) compounds in ambient air (nitrophenol C6H5NO3, methylnitrophenol C7H7NO3, nitrocatechol C6H5NO4, methylnitrocatechol C7H7NO4, and dinitrophenol C6H4N2O5) measured with a micro-orifice volatilization impactor (MOVI) high-resolution chemical ionization mass spectrometer in Detling, United Kingdom during January–February, 2012. NPs absorb radiation in the near-ultraviolet (UV) range of the electromagnetic spectrum and thus are potential components of poorly characterized light-absorbing organic matter (“brown carbon”) which can affect the climate and air quality. Total NP concentrations varied between less than 1 and 98 ng m–3, with a mean value of 20 ng m–3. We conclude that NPs measured in Detling have a significant contribution from biomass burning with an estimated emission factor of 0.2 ng (ppb CO)−1. Particle light absorption measurements by a seven-wavelength aethalometer in the near-UV (370 nm) and literature val...

TL;DR: The first direct search for lepton-flavour-violating decays of the recently discovered Higgs boson (H) is described in this paper, where the search is performed in the H→μτ_e and H→mτ_h channels, where τeτe and τ_h are tau leptons reconstructed in the electronic and hadronic decay channels, respectively.

TL;DR: In this article, the potential of remote sensing methods to obtain information on some snow physical variables such as grain size, liquid water content and snow depth is discussed, and the possibilities for and difficulties of building a snow photochemistry model by adapting current snow physics models are explored.
Abstract: Snow on the ground is a complex multiphase photochemical reactor that dramatically modifies the chemical composition of the overlying atmosphere. A quantitative description of the emissions of reactive gases by snow requires knowledge of snow physical properties. This overview details our current understanding of how those physical properties relevant to snow photochemistry vary during snow metamorphism. Properties discussed are density, specific surface area, thermal conductivity, permeability, gas diffusivity and optical properties. Inasmuch as possible, equations to parameterize these properties as functions of climatic variables are proposed, based on field measurements, laboratory experiments and theory. The potential of remote sensing methods to obtain information on some snow physical variables such as grain size, liquid water content and snow depth are discussed. The possibilities for and difficulties of building a snow photochemistry model by adapting current snow physics models are explored. Elaborate snow physics models already exist, and including variables of particular interest to snow photochemistry such as light fluxes and specific surface area appears possible. On the other hand, understanding the nature and location of reactive molecules in snow seems to be the greatest difficulty modelers will have to face for lack of experimental data, and progress on this aspect will require the detailed study of natural snow samples.

TL;DR: The observation of charge-density-wave correlations in the model cuprate superconductor HgBa2CuO(4+δ) (T(c)=72 K) via bulk Cu L3-edge-resonant X-ray scattering points to a unifying picture in which these two phenomena are preceded at the higher pseudogap temperature by q=0 magnetic order and the build-up of significant dynamic antiferromagnetic correlations.
Abstract: Electronic inhomogeneity appears to be an inherent characteristic of the enigmatic cuprate superconductors. Here we report the observation of charge-density-wave correlations in the model cuprate superconductor HgBa2CuO(4+δ) (T(c)=72 K) via bulk Cu L3-edge-resonant X-ray scattering. At the measured hole-doping level, both the short-range charge modulations and Fermi-liquid transport appear below the same temperature of about 200 K. Our result points to a unifying picture in which these two phenomena are preceded at the higher pseudogap temperature by q=0 magnetic order and the build-up of significant dynamic antiferromagnetic correlations. The magnitude of the charge modulation wave vector is consistent with the size of the electron pocket implied by quantum oscillation and Hall effect measurements for HgBa2CuO(4+δ) and with corresponding results for YBa2Cu3O(6+δ), which indicates that charge-density-wave correlations are universally responsible for the low-temperature quantum oscillation phenomenon.
