Abstract: The prospect of consumer digital versatile disk (DVD) recorders highlights the challenge of protecting copyrighted video content from piracy. We describe the copy-protection system currently under consideration for DVD. The copy-protection system broadly tries to prevent illicit copies from being made from either the analog or digital I/O channels of DVD recorders. An analog copy-protection system is utilized to protect the NTSC/PAL output channel by preventing copies to VHS. The digital transmission of content is protected by a robust encryption protocol between two communicating devices. Watermarking is used to encode copy-control information retrievable from both digital and analog signals. Hence, such embedded signals avoid the need for metadata to be carried in either the digital or analog domains. Finally, the copy-protection system provides the capability for one-generation copying. We discuss some proposed solutions and some of the implementation issues that are being addressed.

Abstract: Synchronous Data Flow Graphs (SDFGs) are a useful tool for modeling and analyzing embedded data flow applications, both in a single processor and a multiprocessing context or for application mapping on platforms. Throughput analysis of these SDFGs is an important step for verifying throughput requirements of concurrent real-time applications, for instance within design-space exploration activities. Analysis of SDFGs can be hard, since the worst-case complexity of analysis algorithms is often high. This is also true for throughput analysis. In particular, many algorithms involve a conversion to another kind of data flow graph, the size of which can be exponentially larger than the size of the original graph. In this paper, we present a method for throughput analysis of SDFGs, based on explicit state-space exploration and we show that the method, despite its worst-case complexity, works well in practice, while existing methods often fail. We demonstrate this by comparing the method with state-ofthe- art cycle mean computation algorithms. Moreover, since the state-space exploration method is essentially the same as simulation of the graph, the results of this paper can be easily obtained as a byproduct in existing simulation tools.

Abstract: The present invention provides a dynamic pricing system that generates pricing recommendations for each product in each market. In particular, the system normalizes historic pricing and sales data, and then analyzes this historic data using parameters describing the user's business objectives to produce a pricing list to achieve these objectives. The system uses historical market data to forecast expected sales according to a market segment, product type, and a range of future dates and to determine the effects of price changes on the forecasted future sales. The system further calculates unit costs for the product. The system then estimates profits from sales at different prices by using the sales forecasts, adjusting these sales forecasts for changes in prices, and the costs determinations. The system optionally optimizes prices given current and projected inventory constraints and generates alerts notices according to pre-set conditions.

Abstract: A survey of the literature reveals that image processing tools aimed at supplementing the art historian's toolbox are currently in the earliest stages of development. To jump-start the development of such methods, the Van Gogh and Kroller-Muller museums in The Netherlands agreed to make a data set of 101 high-resolution gray-scale scans of paintings within their collections available to groups of image processing researchers from several different universities. This article describes the approaches to brushwork analysis and artist identification developed by three research groups, within the framework of this data set.
