Abstract: Semiconducting BaTiO 3 can be prepared by substituting small amounts of ions of higher valency for Ba or Ti ions. At higher concentrations the foreign ions are compensated by metal ion vacancies. Polycrystalline samples prepared in air show an enormous increase in resistivity above the ferro-electric Curie point. According to Heywang this is a result of surface barriers which are very sensitive to the value of dielectric constant. This theory is extended with a ferro-electric effect.

Abstract: In the Editor's Choice [1] the development and demonstration of a highly efficient warm-white all-nitride phosphor-converted light emitting diode (pc-LED) is presented utilizing a GaN based quantum well blue LED and two novel nitrogen containing luminescent materials doped with Eu2+. These novel LEDs are superior to both incandescent and fluorescent lamps and may therefore become the next generation of general lighting sources. The cover picture is an artist's view of the 2-pc-LED: On a copper slug and underneath a plastic lens a ‘flip-chip’ is soldered to metal contacts; ‘flip-chip’ meaning the substrate on which the stack of GaN and InGaN layers has been deposited is used as light exit, the (bottom) p-contacts being highly reflective. The color converting phosphors are placed on top of the chip, embedded in silicone. Primary blue as well as color-converted red and green photons are emitted. The first author, Regina Mueller-Mach, manages the Charac-terization Laboratory at Lumileds which runs R&D work on phosphor converted LEDs in close cooperation with Philips Research Laboratories and the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry of the University of Munich.

Abstract: In this paper, the major direct solutions to the three point perspective pose estimation problems are reviewed from a unified perspective beginning with the first solution which was published in 1841 by a German mathematician, continuing through the solutions published in the German and then American photogrammetry literature, and most recently in the current computer vision literature. The numerical stability of these three point perspective solutions are also discussed. We show that even in case where the solution is not near the geometric unstable region, considerable care must be exercised in the calculation. Depending on the order of the substitutions utilized, the relative error can change over a thousand to one. This difference is due entirely to the way the calculations are performed and not due to any geometric structural instability of any problem instance. We present an analysis method which produces a numerically stable calculation.

Abstract: Critical care patients are monitored closely through the course of their illness. As a result of this monitoring, large amounts of data are routinely collected for these patients. Philips Healthcare has developed a telehealth system, the eICU Program, which leverages these data to support management of critically ill patients. Here we describe the eICU Collaborative Research Database, a multi-center intensive care unit (ICU)database with high granularity data for over 200,000 admissions to ICUs monitored by eICU Programs across the United States. The database is deidentified, and includes vital sign measurements, care plan documentation, severity of illness measures, diagnosis information, treatment information, and more. Data are publicly available after registration, including completion of a training course in research with human subjects and signing of a data use agreement mandating responsible handling of the data and adhering to the principle of collaborative research. The freely available nature of the data will support a number of applications including the development of machine learning algorithms, decision support tools, and clinical research.

Abstract: Very high and broad Curie maxima are observed in ceramic Ba(Ti1-yZry)O3 mixed crystals, which are often used for the preparation of ceramic dielectrics The ferroelectric-to-paraelectric phase transition of ceramic Ba(Ti1-yZry)O3 was studied using dielectric measurements, quantitative DTA, X-ray diffraction, and determination of the remanent polarization At higher Zr concentrations, it was found that ferroelectric and paraelectric phases coexist in a wide temperature region Up toy =016, the phase transition remains first order The diffuse character is promoted by the small energy difference between the ferroelectric and paraelectric phases appearing at higher Zr content It can be best described by a normal distribution of Curie temperatures using the phenome-nological theory of Devonshire and the Newton-Raphson mathematical approximation
