TL;DR: Results demonstrate that in the immature rat more than 50% of PCs are each innervated by at least two distinct CFs; later on, the disappearance of the supernumerary synapses between CF and PC leads, as early as day 15, to the one-to-one relationship betweenCF and PC.
Abstract: Climbing fiber (CF)–-Purkinje cell (PC) relationships were studied electrophysiologically on the cerebellum of 8 to 15 day old rats. Some animals were rendered agranular by x-irradiation from birth; some others were treated with 3-acetyl pyridine 3 days before study to selectively destroy the CF. Unitary extracellular recordings in 8–9 day old normal rats revealed that more than 50μ of the PC units each exhibited either two types of all-or-none climbing fiber responses (CFR) or stepwise graded CFRs. The other PC units only presented one type of all-or-none CFR. These activities were entirely mediated via CF since they persisted at the same age in x-irradiated rats, but were absent in animals treated with 3-acetyl pyridine. Interaction experiments were performed between juxtafastigial and Inferior Olive stimulations on 49 PC units in 8–9 day old normal rats. Collisions between impulses set up in CFs were disclosed in 21 out of the 24 PCs which exhibited only one type of CFR. In the three others and in each of the 25 PCs that displayed two types of all-or-none CFRs, or CFRs graded by steps, no collision was detected. Moreover intracellular recordings of epsp's mediated via CFs in PCs of 8–9 day old normal rats revealed that they frequently fluctuated in stepwise fashion. These results demonstrate that in the immature rat more than 50μ of PCs are each innervated by at least two distinct CFs; later on, the disappearance of the supernumerary synapses between CF and PC leads, as early as day 15, to the one-to-one relationship between CF and PC.

TL;DR: In this article, a study of multihadronic final states produced in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at center-of-mass energies between 3.90 and 4.60 GeV is presented.
Abstract: Evidence is presented, from a study of multihadronic final states produced in e/sup +/e/sup -/ annihilation at center-of-mass energies between 3.90 and 4.60 GeV, for the production of a new neutral state with mass 1865 +- 15 MeV/c/sup 2/ and decay width less than 40 MeV/c/sup 2/ that decays to K/sup plus-or-minus/..pi../sup plus-or-minus/ and K/sup plus-or-minus/..pi../sup plus-or-minus/..pi../sup plus-or-minus/..pi../sup plus-or-minus/. The recoil-mass spectrum for this state suggests that it is produced only in association with systems of comparable or larger mass. (AIP)

TL;DR: In this paper, the thermodynamic properties of one-component ionic plasmas in a responding (polarized) background of fully degenerate electrons are calculated over a wide range of temperatures and densities.
Abstract: The thermodynamic properties of one-component ionic plasmas in a responding (polarized) background of fully degenerate electrons are calculated over a wide range of temperatures and densities The weak and intermediate screening regimes are treated by two complementary methods which take the one-component plasma in a rigid background as a starting point Thermodynamic perturbation theory is used in the weakly screened ionic plasma typical of white-dwarf matter; this leads to simple, analytic expressions for the thermodynamic properties Relativistic effects in the very dense electron gas are considered explicitly A variational method, based on the Gibbs-Bogolyubov inequality, and the physical idea of an effective charge reduction of the ions, yields satisfactory results in the intermediate screening regime typical of the deep interior of Jupiter Our results are in good agreement with the available Monte Carlo data and represent a significant improvement over previous calculations based on a hard-sphere reference system

TL;DR: In this article, a resonance-like structure was observed in the total cross section for hadron production by e$sup +$e$sup -$ colliding beams at a mass of 4414 +- 7 MeV having a total width GAMMA = 33 +- 10 MeV.
Abstract: We observe a resonancelike structure in the total cross section for hadron production by e$sup +$e$sup -$ colliding beams at a mass of 4414 +- 7 MeV having a total width GAMMA = 33 +- 10 MeV. From the area under this resonance, we deduce the partial width to electron pairs to be GAMMA/sub ee/ = 440 +- 140 eV. Further structure of comparable width is present near 4.1 GeV. (AIP)

TL;DR: A review of the most common models of ionic-pair association used by Bjerrum, Fuoss, and Eigen to supplement the breakdown of the Debye-Huckel law for the mean activity coefficient of symmetrical electrolytes in lower-dielectric-constant solvents is given in this article.
Abstract: A review is given of the most common models of ionic-pair association used by Bjerrum, Fuoss, and Eigen to supplement the breakdown of the Debye-Huckel law for the mean activity coefficient of symmetrical electrolytes in lower-dielectric-constant solvents. The compressibility and pressure equations of Rasaiah and Friedman and the virial equation are used to rederive the activity coefficients from the distribution functions of Meeron and of Debye and Huckel. The results are compared to the well-known results of Debye and Huckel and that of Bjerrum. In each case the anion-cation pair association concept of Bjerrum is verified. Finally, a discussion is included on the best evaluation of the critical distance which distinguishes between free and associated ions. The activity equation is easily generalized to any short-range Hamiltonian model.

TL;DR: Carbon dioxide dissociation curves were determined at 15°C on the oxygenated and deoxygenated sera of nine specimens of the shore crabCarcinus maenas, at various stages of the molting cycle, finding a small but typical haldane effect is present at alkaline pH.
Abstract: 1. Carbon dioxide dissociation curves were determined at 15°C on the oxygenated and deoxygenated sera of nine specimens of the shore crabCarcinus maenas, at various stages of the molting cycle. 2. These curves vary in shape and position, being steeper at intermolt and premolt stages when the blood protein concentration is high, than at postmolt stages, characterized by low blood protein concentration. 3. The buffering power of non-bicarbonate buffers, defined as the in vitro slope of the [HCO3−]vs. pH line at variable\(P_{CO_2 } \) and constant base, varies linearly with the protein concentration and the oxygen capacity. 4. A small but typical haldane effect is present at alkaline pH,\(C_{CO_2 } \) and pH being higher for a given\(P_{CO_2 } \) in the deoxygenated serum.

TL;DR: The first experimental demonstration of Doppler-free three-photon spectroscopy was made in this paper, where the sum of the momenta of the three photons simultaneously exchanged between the atom and the laser beams is equal to 0.
Abstract: We report here the first experimental demonstration of Doppler-free three-photon spectroscopy. The Doppler broadening is eliminated by insuring that the sum of the momenta of the three photons simultaneously exchanged between the atom and the laser beams is equal to 0. This is accomplished by making a proper choice of the angles between the three exciting beams. The observation has been made on the sodium $3{S}_{\frac{1}{2}}\ensuremath{-}3{P}_{\frac{1}{2}}$ transition with absorption of two photons and induced emission of one.

TL;DR: Effects of cycloheximide are interpreted as showing a specific control of the cytoplasmic protein-synthesizing system on the changes in mitochondrial oxidations during aging.
Abstract: Aging of slices of potato tuber (Solanum tuberosum L.) in an aerated liquid medium induces a number of changes in mitochondrial activities. A nonphosphorylative, cyanide-insensitive electron transport pathway (alternate pathway) is brought into operation. The rate of oxidation of exogenous NADH increases markedly and the efficiency of phosphorylation with this substrate remains the same as it is in mitochondria isolated from fresh tissue slices. On the contrary, the rates of oxidation of succinate and malate do not increase while lower phosphorylative efficiencies indicate that a fraction of their electrons reaches oxygen through the alternate pathway. Chloramphenicol, a specific inhibitor of the mitochondrial protein-synthesizing system, has no effect whatsoever on these events. However, cycloheximide, which acts on the corresponding cytoplasmic system, prevents both the development of the alternate pathway and the rise in the rate of oxidation of exogenous NADH. These effects are interpreted as showing a specific control of the cytoplasmic protein-synthesizing system on the changes in mitochondrial oxidations during aging.

TL;DR: In this article, a numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations under the Boussinesq approximation is obtained by means of an implicit finite-difference method.
Abstract: The unsteady laminar flow due to the penetration of a horizontal jet of constant density into a stratified fluid is considered. A numerical solution of the Navier–Stokes equations under the Boussinesq approximation is obtained by means of an implicit finite-difference method. Results for different values of the Reynolds and internal Froude numbers are given and discussed.
