Abstract: This contribution analyzes the circulatory patterns of air pollutants in Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain), an area with strong coastal and orographic influence, during a typical summer-time situation. Special emphasis is put on the development of the seabreeze circulation and the penetration of its front in the terrain. The analysis was carried out using data from an elastic-backscatter lidar and results from the application of a mesoscale meteorological model. Vertical scans from the lidar revealed a multilayer arrangement of the aerosols above the city, which is related to the sea-breeze circulations and the mountain and valley winds that originate in the region. The formation of a thermal internal boundary layer above the city, as cold and stable air from the sea flows over the heated surface, was also captured with the lidar. The non-hydrostatic meteorological model MEMO was applied to the Barcelona Area. A dispersion simulation, using CO as a tracer, was also carried out, whose aim is the identification of the atmospheric circulatory patterns in the region. Results from the model helped to understand the information acquired with the lidar to make a full description of the circulatory patterns of air pollutants in the Barcelona air basin.

Abstract: El presente articulo describe el estudio comparativo entre modalidades presencial y virtual de dieciocho competencias genericas del modelo de competencias Alfa Tuning de Latinoamerica. El estudio se realizo con estudiantes de Licenciatura en Redes y Comunicaciones de la Universidad Tecnologica de Panama, quienes participaron en un proceso de investigacion que los involucraba a practicas presenciales y a practicas virtuales. Los resultados revelaron las diferencias existentes al momento de implementar un mecanismo que introduce competencias a traves de medios presenciales versus medios virtuales. Se observo que la mayoria de las competencias genericas mantienen el mismo nivel de desarrollo en ambas modalidades y que ademas un 44% de las competencias genericas obtienen un mejor nivel de consecucion en la modalidad virtual y un 6% de las competencias genericas lograron una mejor evaluacion en la modalidad presencial. El estudio concluye que las competencias genericas segun Alfa Tuning se pueden desarrollar tanto en los entornos virtuales de aprendizaje como en el tradicional salon de clases, lo que apunta a que ambas opciones pueden ser empleadas por las universidades cuando se disenan este tipo de curriculum. This paper describes a comparative study of eighteen generic skills from Latin America Alfa Tuning project applied in a case using classroom and virtual education. The results revealed differences when implementing a mechanism to introduce competences through means-face versus virtual means. It was observed that most of the generic competences maintain the same level of development in both types of education and also 44% of generic competences get better level of achievement in virtual education and 6% of generic competences improved through classroom education. The study concludes that as Alfa Tuning generic competences can be developed both in virtual learning environments such as in the traditional classroom, which suggests that both options can be used by universities when designing curriculum.

Abstract: En este trabajo describimos la evaluacion continua que se aplica en la asignatura Componentes y Circuitos en la titulacion Ingenieria Tecnica de Telecomunicacion de la Escuela Politecnica Superior de Castelldefels (EPSC). La evaluacion de la asignatura se divide en dos partes: un 50 % corresponde a las sesiones de teoria y el otro 50 % corresponde a las sesiones de laboratorio. La experiencia que describimos se refiere al cuatrimestre de otono de 2006. En el trabajo se realiza un estudio cuantitativo del rendimiento conseguido por los estudiantes, en funcion de sus estudios de procedencia y de su nota de acceso a la Universidad.

Abstract: Two-dimensional numerical models have been extensively used in the far field to solve hydrodynamics and the associated pollutant transport. However the results obtained from these models may not be suitable when used in the near field or in areas where the hydrodynamics has threedimensional features, such as wind-induced currents in the nearshore region or wave-induced currents in the surf zone. A 3D Lagrangian numerical model has been developed to solve the three-dimensional convectiondiffusion equation in order to simulate pollutant transport in non-uniform and stratified hydrodynamic flows. In this paper the model characteristics and its calibration process are described and posteriorly it is applied to the case of the Besos marine outfall, near Barcelona (Spanish Mediterranean coast) and to simulate tracer clouds dispersion in the surf-zone.

Abstract: En este articulo se presenta una plataforma de simulacion de un sistema de generacion eolica basada en el entorno Matlab-Simulink. La plataforma se ha estructurado en modulos o bloques aislados, de forma que la pantalla principal no presenta ninguna conexion entre ellos. Esta particularidad permite cambiar muy facilmente los modulos constituyentes de la planta para realizar distintas configuraciones. En este caso la aplicacion se ha orientado a un sistema de generacion eolica, aunque podria desarrollarse de forma similar para otras plantas. Se preve que los estudiantes utilicen esta plataforma para analizar su funcionamiento y tambien como se comporta el sistema ante distintas incidencias, tanto en la parte del generador eolico como de la red electrica (patrones de viento, huecos de tension de red, desequilibrios de tensiones, etc.). Ademas, debido a la arquitectura abierta de la planta, esta se puede ampliar mediante contribuciones de estudiantes en proyectos final de carrera o proyectos de aprendizaje (PBL: “Project Based Learning”) en el espacio europeo de educacion superior.
