TL;DR: In this paper, a large entropy variation (magnetocaloric effect) has been discovered in ceramic perovskites with the formulas La0.65Ca0.35Ti1−xMnxO3−z and La 0.5+x+yLi0.5−3yTi 1−3xmn3xO 3−z, and both Curie temperature and entropy change were studied from 4.2 to 400 K for different stoichiometric compositions and applied magnetic fields.
Abstract: A large entropy variation (magnetocaloric effect) has been discovered in ceramic perovskites with the formulas La0.65Ca0.35Ti1−xMnxO3−z and La0.5+x+yLi0.5−3yTi1−3xMn3xO3−z. Both Curie temperature and entropy change were studied from 4.2 to 400 K for different stoichiometric compositions and applied magnetic fields. Our conclusion is that these materials are excellent candidates for working materials in magnetic refrigeration and liquefaction devices in a wide temperature range.

TL;DR: In this paper, a fixed-frequency quasi-sliding control algorithm based on switching surface zero averaged dynamics (ZAD) is reported, which is applied to the design of a buck-based inverter, and implemented in a laboratory prototype by means of a field programmable gate array (FPGA).
Abstract: In this paper, a fixed-frequency quasi-sliding control algorithm based on switching surface zero averaged dynamics (ZAD) is reported. This algorithm is applied to the design of a buck-based inverter, and implemented in a laboratory prototype by means of a field programmable gate array (FPGA), taking into account processing speed versus computational complexity trade-off. Three control laws, namely sliding control (SC), fixed-frequency quasi-sliding ZAD and PWM-based control have been experimentally tested to highlight the features of the proposed algorithm. According to the experimental results presented in the paper, the ZAD algorithm fulfills the requirement of fixed switching frequency and exhibits similar robustness properties in the presence of perturbations to those of sliding control mode.

TL;DR: In this paper, the tensile index, elongation and elastic modulus of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) and nanopaper were compared and the effect of residual cell wall components accessed.
Abstract: Unbleached (UN), oxygen-delignified and fully-bleached (FB) birch fibers with a residual lignin content of ca. 3, 2 and <1 %, respectively, were used to produce nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) and nanopaper by using an overpressure device. The tensile index, elongation and elastic modulus of nanopaper were compared and the effect of residual cell wall components accessed. Under similar manufacturing conditions, UN NFC produced nanopaper with a density of 0.99 g/cm3, higher than that from FB NFC (0.7 g/cm3). This translated in much lower air permeability in the case of UN nanopaper (1 and 11 mL/min for UN and FB samples, respectively). Fundamentally, these observations are ascribed to the finer fibrils produced during microfluidization of UN fibers compared to those from lower yield counterparts (AFM roughness of 8 and 17 nm and surface areas of 124 and 98 m2/g for NFC from UN and FB fibers, respectively). As a result, values of stress at break and energy absorption of nanopaper from high yield fibers are distinctively higher than those from fully bleached NFC. Interactions of water with the surface and bulk material were affected by the chemical composition and structure of the nanofibrils. While UN nanopaper presented higher water contact angles their sorption capacity (and rate of water absorption) was much higher than those measured for nanopaper from FB NFC. These and other observations provided in this contribution are proposed to be related to the mechanoradical scavenging capacity of lignin in high shear microfluidization and the presence of residual heteropolysaccharides.

TL;DR: In this article, a comparison of the numerical results and the experimental results is carried out with the aim of making a careful assessment of the ability of the code to reproduce the experiments.
Abstract: Mixing produced by Rayleigh–Taylor instability at the interface between two layers is the subject of a comparative study between laboratory and numerical experiments. The laboratory experiments consist of a layer of brine initially at rest on top of a layer of fresh water. When a horizontal barrier separating the two layers is removed, the ensuing motion and the mixing that is produced is studied by a number of diagnostic techniques. This configuration is modelled numerically using a three-dimensional code, which solves the Euler equations on a 1803 grid. A comparison of the numerical results and the experimental results is carried out with the aim of making a careful assessment of the ability of the code to reproduce the experiments. In particular, it is found that the motions are quite sensitive to the presence of large scales produced when the barrier is removed, but the amount and form of the mixing is not very sensitive to the initial conditions. The implications of this comparison for improvements in the experimental and numerical techniques are discussed.
