20 Jun 1994TL;DR: Examples are presented that show how all the reachable states of a Petri net can be efficiently calculated and represented with a small BDD, and properties requiring an exhaustive analysis of the state space can be verified in polynomial time in the size of the BDD.
Abstract: This paper presents a novel analysis approach for bounded Petri nets. The net behavior is modeled by boolean functions, thus reducing reasoning about Petri nets to boolean calculation. The state explosion problem is managed by using Binary Decision Diagrams (BDDs), which are capable to represent large sets of markings in small data structures. The ability of Petri nets to model systems, the flexibility and generality of boolean algebras, and the efficient implementation of BDDs, provide a general environment to handle a large variety of problems. Examples are presented that show how all the reachable states (1018) of a Petri net can be efficiently calculated and represented with a small BDD (103 nodes). Properties requiring an exhaustive analysis of the state space can be verified in polynomial time in the size of the BDD.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a stabilized finite element formulation for the transient incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, which allows the use of equal interpolation for both velocities and pressures, and provides a stability estimate for the case of the simple backward Euler time integration scheme for both the implicit and explicit treatment of the pressure gradient projection.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the structural properties of hexagonal-close-packed metals using computer simulation techniques and found that the core structures, in particular the core widths, are very sensitive to the interatomic potential used and can be extremely wide for the (1012) and (1121) boundaries.

TL;DR: In this paper, isotopic ratios of intermediate-mass elements up to silicon for the ejecta of CO and ONe novae, based on 20 hydrodynamic models of nova explosions, are presented.
Abstract: Infrared and ultraviolet observations of nova light curves have confirmed grain formation in their expanding shells that are ejected into the interstellar medium by a thermonuclear runaway. In this paper we present isotopic ratios of intermediate-mass elements up to silicon for the ejecta of CO and ONe novae, based on 20 hydrodynamic models of nova explosions. These theoretical estimates will help to properly identify nova grains in primitive meteorites. In addition, equilibrium condensation calculations are used to predict the types of grains that can be expected in the nova ejecta, providing some hints on the puzzling formation of C-rich dust in O > C environments. These results show that SiC grains can condense in ONe novae, in concert with an inferred (ONe) nova origin for several presolar SiC grains.
