Abstract: Duty-cycled Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols certainly improve the energy efficiency of wireless networks. However, most of these protocols still suffer from severe degrees of overhearing and idle listening. These two issues prevent optimum energy usage, a crucial aspect in energy-constrained wireless networks such as wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Wake-up radio (WuR) systems drastically reduce these problems by completely switching off the nodes' microcontroller unit (MCU) and main radio transceiver until a secondary, extremely low-power receiver is triggered by a particular wireless transmission, the so called wake-up call. Unfortunately, most WuR studies focus on theoretical platforms and/or custom-built simulators. Both these factors reduce the associated usefulness of the obtained results. In this paper, we model and simulate a real, recent, and promising WuR hardware platform developed by the authors. The simulation model uses time and energy consumption values obtained in the laboratory and does not rely on custom-built simulation engines, but rather on the OMNET++ simulator. The performance of the WuR platform is compared to four of the most well-known and widely employed MAC protocols for WSN under three real-world network deployments. The paper demonstrates how the use of our WuR platform presents numerous benefits in several areas, from energy efficiency and latency to packet delivery ratio and applicability, and provides the essential information for serious consideration of switching duty-cycled MAC-based networks to WuR.

Abstract: A new kind of double- and single-arm cantilever type DC-contact RF MEMS actuators has been monolithically integrated with an antenna architecture to develop a frequency reconfigurable antenna. The design, microfabrication, and characterization of this ?reconfigurable antenna (RA) annular slot? which was built on a microwave laminate TMM10i ( ?r = 9.8, tan ? = 0.002), are presented in this paper. By activating/deactivating the RF MEMS actuators, which are strategically located within the antenna geometry and microstrip feed line, the operating frequency band is changed. The RA annular slot has two reconfigurable frequencies of operation with center frequencies f low = 2.4 GHz and f high = 5.2 GHz, compatible with IEEE 802.11 WLAN standards. The radiation and impedance characteristics of the antenna along with the RF performance of individual actuators are presented and discussed.

Abstract: The development of NURBS-Enhanced Finite Element Method (NEFEM) is revisited. This technique allows a seamless integration of the CAD boundary representation of the domain and the finite element method (FEM). The importance of the geometrical model in finite element simulations is addressed and the benefits and potential of NEFEM are discussed and compared with respect to other curved finite element techniques.

Abstract: In the late 1990s, powerful economic forces led to the adoption of commodity desktop processors in high-performance computing. This transformation has been so effective that the June 2013 TOP500 list is still dominated by x86. In 2013, the largest commodity market in computing is not PCs or servers, but mobile computing, comprising smart-phones and tablets, most of which are built with ARM-based SoCs. This leads to the suggestion that once mobile SoCs deliver sufficient performance, mobile SoCs can help reduce the cost of HPC. This paper addresses this question in detail. We analyze the trend in mobile SoC performance, comparing it with the similar trend in the 1990s. We also present our experience evaluating performance and efficiency of mobile SoCs, deploying a cluster and evaluating the network and scalability of production applications. In summary, we give a first answer as to whether mobile SoCs are ready for HPC.

Abstract: In this study the characterization and soot oxidation activity of Ag-based catalysts deposited on alumina, ceria and zirconia have been investigated. The combustion of soot was shown to be promoted by the presence of silver, especially in a zero valent state, over all the supports investigated. Presence of silver in a positive oxidation state is favoured with CeO2, while zero valent silver dominates over alumina and zirconia. This is likely attributed to the oxygen storage capacity of ceria which stabilizes silver in an oxidized form. Soot oxidation starts at low temperature (around 500 K for Ag on ZrO2) with a T50 in the range of 600–640 K. Deactivation under strong ageing conditions (1023 K for 12 h) is negligible with alumina and zirconia, while in the presence of ceria, which slows down formation of metallic silver from Ag2O, loss of activity following thermal treatments at high temperatures becomes more intense.
