TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the effect of hydraulic residence time (HRT) on the performance of household digesters. Andean digesters originally developed in tropical regions have been adapted to the extreme weather conditions of the Andean Plateau (3000-4000m.a.s.l.).
Abstract: Low-cost tubular digesters originally developed in tropical regions have been adapted to the extreme weather conditions of the Andean Plateau (3000–4000 m.a.s.l.). The aim of this study was to characterise biogas production in household digesters located at high altitude, operating under psychrophilic conditions. To this end, two pilot digesters were monitored and field campaigns were carried out in two representative digesters of rural communities. Digesters’ useful volume ranged between 2.4 and 7.5 m 3 , and hydraulic residence time (HRT) between 60 and 90 days. The temperature inside the digester’s greenhouse ranged between 20 and 25 °C. Treating cow manure, a specific biogas production around 0.35 m 3 kg VS −1 was obtained, with some 65% CH 4 in biogas. In order to fulfil daily requirements for cooking and lighting, biogas production should be enhanced without increasing implementation costs as not to impede the expansion of this technology at household scale. In this sense, HRT below 60 days and OLR above 1 kg VS m −3 day −1 should be investigated to decrease digesters’ volume (i.e. costs) and increase biogas production rate. The adaptation of conventional gas burners to biogas characteristics can also contribute in improving the efficiency of the system.

TL;DR: This paper comprehensively surveys state of the art BLE mesh networking, describing the variety of approaches that leverage existing BLE functionality to enable BLE Mesh Networks and identifying crucial aspects of BLEMesh network solutions.
Abstract: Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) has gained significant momentum. However, the original design of BLE focused on star topology networking, which limits network coverage range and precludes end-to-end path diversity. In contrast, other competing technologies overcome such constraints by supporting the mesh network topology. For these reasons, academia, industry, and standards development organizations have been designing solutions to enable BLE mesh networks. Nevertheless, the literature lacks a consolidated view on this emerging area. This paper comprehensively surveys state of the art BLE mesh networking. We first provide a taxonomy of BLE mesh network solutions. We then review the solutions, describing the variety of approaches that leverage existing BLE functionality to enable BLE mesh networks. We identify crucial aspects of BLE mesh network solutions and discuss their advantages and drawbacks. Finally, we highlight currently open issues.

TL;DR: In this article, a 3D coupled thermo-mechanical model has been used to predict residual stresses and distortions in additive manufactured (AM) parts, and different preheating strategies have been also analyzed to check their effectiveness on the mitigation of both distortions and residual stresses.
Abstract: Residual stresses and distortion in Additive Manufactured (AM) parts are two key obstacles which seriously hinder the wide application of this technology. Nowadays, understanding the thermomechanical behavior induced by the AM process is still a complex task which must take into account the effects of both the process and the material parameters, the microstructure evolution as well as the pre-heating strategy. One of the challenges of this work is to increase the complexity of the geometries used to study the thermomechanical behavior induced by the AM process. The reference geometries are a rectangular and a S-shaped structures made of 44-layers each. The samples have been fabricated by Directed Energy Deposition (DED). In-situ thermal and distortion histories of the substrate are measured in order to calibrate the 3D coupled thermo-mechanical model. Once the numerical results showed a good agreement with the temperature measurements, the validated model has been used to predict the residual stresses and distortions. Different process parameters have been analyzed to study their sensitivity to the process assessment. Different preheating strategies have been also analyzed to check their effectiveness on the mitigation of both distortions and residual stresses. Finally, some simplifications of the actual scanning sequence are proposed to reduce the computational cost without loss of the accuracy of the simulation framework.
