Abstract: The book focuses on topics that are at the core of the Finite Element Method (FEM) for the mechanics of deformable solids and structures.Its main objective is to provide the reader, who is assumed to be familiar with standard continuum solid mechanics, with a clear grasp of the essentials, sufficient background for reading and exploiting the research literature on computational solid mechanics, and a working knowledge of the main implementational issues of the FEM.This book arises from a course taught since 2004 to last-year students of Ecole Polytechnique (France). It is intended for Master and PhD students, as well as scientists and engineers looking for a rigorous introduction to FEM theory and programming for linear and non-linear analyses in solid mechanics.As a distinguishing feature, in addition to sections devoted to theory and concepts presented in general terms, each chapter also features other sections (interspersed with the former) devoted to detailed description of specific features (e.g. the construction of a specific finite element), annotated Matlab code and/or numerical examples produced with it, or worked-out analytical examples.

Abstract: We propose a novel cross resonant optical antenna consisting of two perpendicular nanosized gold dipole antennas with a common feed gap. We demonstrate that the cross antenna is able to convert propagating fields of any polarization state into correspondingly polarized, localized, and enhanced fields and vice versa. The cross antenna structure therefore opens the road towards the control of light-matter interactions based on polarized light as well as the analysis of polarized fields on the nanometer scale.

Abstract: This paper considers the problem of adaptive fuzzy backstepping-based output-feedback controller design for a class of uncertain switched nonlinear stochastic systems in lower-triangular form without the measurements of the system states. By combining fuzzy logic systems’ universal approximation ability and dynamic surface control technique in the adaptive backstepping recursive design with a modified average dwell-time scheme, a new adaptive fuzzy control approach is presented for the switched system. More specifically, a switched observer is constructed to reduce the conservativeness aroused by the employ of a common observer, and individual coordinate transformations for subsystems are given up by adopting a common coordinate transformation of all subsystems. It is proved that the overall closed-loop system is stable in the sense of semi-globally uniformly ultimately bounded in mean square, and the output of the switched system converges to a small neighborhood of the origin with appropriate choice of design parameters. Finally, simulation studies are provided to demonstrate the validity of the proposed control method.

Abstract: A growing trend for information technology is to not just react to changes, but anticipate them as much as possible. This paradigm made modern solutions, such as recommendation systems, a ubiquitous presence in today’s digital transactions. Anticipatory networking extends the idea to communication technologies by studying patterns and periodicity in human behavior and network dynamics to optimize network performance. This survey collects and analyzes recent papers leveraging context information to forecast the evolution of network conditions and, in turn, to improve network performance. In particular, we identify the main prediction and optimization tools adopted in this body of work and link them with objectives and constraints of the typical applications and scenarios. Finally, we consider open challenges and research directions to make anticipatory networking part of next generation networks.

Abstract: Solution-processed bulk heterojunction (BHJ) based on electron-donor (D) polymer and acceptor (A) fullerene is a promising technology for organic photovoltaics. Geminate charge recombination is regarded as one of the main loss mechanisms limiting device performances. This stems from the dynamics of the initial charge transfer state (CTS), which depend on the blend morphology, the molecular conformation, and the energetics of the D:A interface. Here we study the photophysics of a crystalline phase-separated blend of regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) with [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) with a coarsened morphology, by mapping the transient absorption signal with submicrometer space and subpicosecond time resolution. At the P3HT:PCBM interface, we detect a long-lived photoinduced dynamic that we assign to a peculiar coherent CTS forming in ∼10 ps, not affected by geminate recombination and characterized by a different polarization with respect to the one in the usual polydispersed ...
