TL;DR: This paper proposes a tentative list of information that could be included in published descriptions of tissue electrophysiology models, and used to support interpretation and evaluation of simulation results, to discuss challenges and open questions.
Abstract: Models of cardiac tissue electrophysiology are an important component of the Cardiac Physiome Project, which is an international effort to build biophysically based multi-scale mathematical models of the heart. Models of tissue electrophysiology can provide a bridge between electrophysiological cell models at smaller scales, and tissue mechanics, metabolism and blood flow at larger scales. This paper is a critical review of cardiac tissue electrophysiology models, focussing on the micro-structure of cardiac tissue, generic behaviours of action potential propagation, different models of cardiac tissue electrophysiology, the choice of parameter values and tissue geometry, emergent properties in tissue models, numerical techniques and computational issues. We propose a tentative list of information that could be included in published descriptions of tissue electrophysiology models, and used to support interpretation and evaluation of simulation results. We conclude with a discussion of challenges and open questions.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors provide a general theoretical framework exploiting copulas for studying the return periods of hydrological events; in particular, they consider events depending upon the joint behavior of two nonindependent random variables, an approach which can easily be generalized to the multivariate case.
Abstract: [1] In this paper we provide a general theoretical framework exploiting copulas for studying the return periods of hydrological events; in particular, we consider events depending upon the joint behavior of two nonindependent random variables, an approach which can easily be generalized to the multivariate case. We show that using copulas may greatly simplify the calculations and may even yield analytical expressions for the isolines of the return periods, both in the unconditional and in the conditional case. In addition, we show how a new probability distribution may be associated with the return period of specific events and introduce the definitions of sub-, super-, and critical events as well as those of primary and secondary return periods. An illustration of the techniques proposed is provided by analyzing some case studies already examined in literature.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that no efficient, automatic mechanism like currency devaluation or prompt flexibility of wages and prices may grant each territory some role in the inter-national division of labour, whatever its relative performance.
Abstract: In a globalising economy, territories and not just firms increasingly find themselves in competition with each other. In fact, differently from the case of countries, cities and regions compete, on the international market for goods and production factors, on the basis of an absolute advantage principle, and not of a comparative advantage principle; this means that no efficient, automatic mechanism like currency devaluation or prompt flexibility of wages and prices - may grant each territory some role in the inter-national division of labour, whatever its relative performance. Competitiveness of territories emerges as a central issue, in order to secure employment stability, benefits from external integration, continuing growth of local wellbeing and wealth. The arguments put forward by Paul Krugman, defining the concept of competitiveness wrong and misleading, cannot be accepted in a territorial 'regional and urban' context.

TL;DR: Generic chips can accelerate the development of future photonic circuits by providing a higher-level platform for prototyping novel optical functionalities without the need for custom chip fabrication.
Abstract: The growing maturity of integrated photonic technology makes it possible to build increasingly large and complex photonic circuits on the surface of a chip. Today, most of these circuits are designed for a specific application, but the increase in complexity has introduced a generation of photonic circuits that can be programmed using software for a wide variety of functions through a mesh of on-chip waveguides, tunable beam couplers and optical phase shifters. Here we discuss the state of this emerging technology, including recent developments in photonic building blocks and circuit architectures, as well as electronic control and programming strategies. We cover possible applications in linear matrix operations, quantum information processing and microwave photonics, and examine how these generic chips can accelerate the development of future photonic circuits by providing a higher-level platform for prototyping novel optical functionalities without the need for custom chip fabrication. The current state of programmable photonic integrated circuits is discussed, including recent developments in their building blocks, circuit architectures, electronic control and programming strategies, as well as different application spaces.
