Abstract: [1] Heterogeneity is the single most salient feature of hydrogeology. An enormous amount of work has been devoted during the last 30 years to addressing this issue. Our objective is to synthesize and to offer a critical appraisal of results related to the problem of finding representative hydraulic conductivities. By representative hydraulic conductivity we mean a parameter controlling the average behavior of groundwater flow within an aquifer at a given scale. Three related concepts are defined: effective hydraulic conductivity, which relates the ensemble averages of flux and head gradient; equivalent conductivity, which relates the spatial averages of flux and head gradient within a given volume of an aquifer; and interpreted conductivity, which is the one derived from interpretation of field data. Most theoretical results are related to effective conductivity, and their application to real world scenarios relies on ergodic assumptions. Fortunately, a number of results are available suggesting that conventional hydraulic test interpretations yield (interpreted) hydraulic conductivity values that can be closely linked to equivalent and/or effective hydraulic conductivities. Complex spatial distributions of geologic hydrofacies and flow conditions have a strong impact upon the existence and the actual values of representative parameters. Therefore it is not surprising that a large body of literature provides particular solutions for simplified boundary conditions and geological settings, which are, nevertheless, useful for many practical applications. Still, frequent observations of scale effects imply that efforts should be directed at characterizing well-connected stochastic random fields and at evaluating the corresponding representative hydraulic conductivities.

Abstract: The intrinsic flexibility and dynamism of service-centric applications preclude their pre-release validation and demand for suitable probes to monitor their behavior at run-time. Probes must be suitably activated and deactivated according to the context in which the application is executed, but also according to the confidence we get on its quality. The paper supports the idea that significant data may come from very different sources and probes must be able to accommodate all of them. The paper presents: (1) an approach to specify monitoring directives, called monitoring rules, and weave them dynamically into the process they belong to; (2) a proxy-based solution to support the dynamic selection and execution of monitoring rules at run-time; (3) a user-oriented language to integrate data acquisition and analysis into monitoring rules.

Abstract: This paper addresses the possibility to burn hydrogen in a large size, heavy-duty gas turbine designed to run on natural gas as a possible short-term measure to reduce greenhouse emissions of the power industry. The process used to produce hydrogen is not discussed here: we mainly focus on the behavior of the gas turbine by analyzing the main operational aspects related to switching from natural gas to hydrogen. We will consider the effects of variations of volume flow rate and of thermophysical properties on the matching between turbine and compressor and on the blade cooling of the hot rows of the gas turbine. In the analysis we will take into account that those effects are largely emphasized by the abundant dilution of the fuel by inert gases (steam or nitrogen), necessary to control the NO x emissions. Three strategies will be considered to adapt the original machine, designed to run on natural gas, to operate properly with diluted hydrogen: variable guide vane (VGV) operations, increased pressure ratio, re-engineered machine. The performance analysis, carried out by a calculation method including a detailed model of the cooled gas turbine expansion, shows that moderate efficiency decays can be predicted with elevated dilution rates (nitrogen is preferable to steam under this point of view). The combined cycle power output substantially increases if not controlled by VGV operations. It represents an opportunity if some moderate re-design is accepted (turbine blade height modifications or high-pressure compressor stages addition).
