TL;DR: A simple technique for the numerical calculation of the pairwise error probability (PEP) of space-time codes over fading channels and its application to the multiple antenna independent Rayleigh-fading channel and to the Rayleigh block fading channel is described.
Abstract: We describe a simple technique for the numerical calculation, within any desired degree of accuracy, of the pairwise error probability (PEP) of space-time codes over fading channels. This method applies also to the calculation of E[Q(/spl radic//spl xi/)] for any nonnegative random variable /spl xi/ whose moment-generating function /spl Phi//sub /spl xi//(s)=E[exp(-s/spl xi/)] is known. Its application to the multiple antenna independent Rayleigh-fading channel and to the Rayleigh block fading channel is discussed, and illustrated by two simple examples.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that near-infrared BSWs sustained by a silicon-based multilayer can be locally coupled and guided through dielectric ridges of nanometric thickness with low propagation losses.
Abstract: We present a direct evidence of Bloch surface waves (BSWs) waveguiding on ultrathin polymeric ridges, supported by near-field measurements. It is demonstrated that near-infrared BSWs sustained by a silicon-based multilayer can be locally coupled and guided through dielectric ridges of nanometric thickness with low propagation losses. Using a conventional prism-based configuration, we demonstrate a wavelength-selective BSW coupling inside and outside the ridge. Such a result can open interesting opportunities in surface wave-mediated sensing applications, where light could be selectively coupled in specific regions defined by nanometric reliefs.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the behavior of the Stava tailings dams in terms of the percentage of silt and sand that composed the soil, and the susceptibility of the dams to liquefaction.
Abstract: Tailings dams can be fragile structures and too often they are subject to liquefaction. The material they are composed of is rather peculiar, having a man-made origin, and their behaviour is still not very well understood. The soil from the Stava tailings dams, structures that were subject to liquefaction in 1985 causing extensive destruction, was investigated in this study as an example of tailings. Two main aspects of their behaviour have been examined: the influence of the percentage of silt and sand that compose the soil on its mechanical behaviour, and the susceptibility to liquefaction, analysing the behaviour within a critical state framework. In this paper it is shown that, as the quantity of silt increases, the slope and intercept of the normal compression line and critical state line at higher pressures decrease until an inversion of behaviour is observed, while at lower stress levels the critical state line changes its position but not its slope. This means that the effect of adding silt on the...
